They exhumed Beethoven&#8217;s body and put it in a new and better metal coffin before burying him again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Unfortunately, the W\u00e4hringer cemetery shut in 1873, eventually converting to a park in the mid-1920s. L.); Wien Museum Inv.-Nr. 233630; excerpt reproduced with permission under the terms of the CC0 licence)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, in 1888, they dug up Beethoven again and reburied him in a special honorary grave at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/zentralfriedhof\/\">Zentralfriedhof<\/a>, which is Vienna&#8217;s main cemetery and home to numerous esteemed former residents of Austria&#8217;s capital.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A newspaper report on the fresh burial noted (my rough translation):<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>The gracious chirping of songbirds left a poignant impression as it rang out from the willows and acacias in the middle of the prayers of the clergy and among the sombre tones of the trumpets (?).<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/beethovensgrave.jpg\" alt=\"Beethoven's grave\" class=\"wp-image-43289\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/beethovensgrave.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/beethovensgrave-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">(The final resting place among the greenery and musical colleagues)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Third time lucky, one might say, as Beethoven&#8217;s been left to rest undisturbed since. Schubert suffered the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/footsteps\/schuberts-grave\/\">same fate<\/a>, but at least both composers fared better than poor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/footsteps\/mozarts-grave\/\">Mozart<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The grave&#8217;s location and surrounding cemetery is astonishingly peaceful and, dare I say, beautiful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Beethoven lies among flowers, shrubs, trees and other greenery. In spring or summer, bask in the sunlight, close your eyes, and you might almost hear the opening bars of <em>F\u00fcr Elise<\/em> drifting through the air.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div align=\"center\"><em>Ad:<\/em><br><\/div><div data-tiqets-widget=\"discovery\" data-cards-layout=\"horizontal\" data-content-type=\"product\" data-content-ids=\"1008299,1029872\" data-partner=\"visitingvienna\" data-tq-campaign=\"DA_Concerts1\"><\/div><script defer=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/widgets.tiqets.com\/loader.js\"><\/script>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The gravestone itself is a copy of the original from the W\u00e4hringer cemetery. Written on it are the following words (in German of course, so my rough translation)&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>This gravestone was built to the same design as the original in the W\u00e4hringer Ortsfriedhof and erected by the Association of Friends of Music in 1888 with financial help from the Imperial City Development Fund of Vienna and the Philharmonic Association<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Where is Beethoven&#8217;s grave?<\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/beethovengraveinscription.jpg\" alt=\"Inscription on Beethoven's grave\" class=\"wp-image-43288\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/beethovengraveinscription.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/beethovengraveinscription-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">(Front view and inscription, which I translate above)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Zentralfriedhof is a huge site, but Beethoven&#8217;s grave resides among a cluster of famous composers not far from the main entrance in one of the areas largely reserved for honoured &#8220;guests&#8221; only.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Look for Grave 29 in Group 32a on the cemetery maps dotted around the area. Near neighbours include Schubert, Brahms, various members of the Strauss family, and other musical luminaries like Josef Lanner or Christof Willibald Gluck. (Sch\u00f6nberg lies a little further away in Group 32c.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can find the grave easily if you enter the cemetery through that main entrance, which is called Tor 2. Then head toward the large Jugendstil church in the distance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Keep your eyes on the left hand side about 100m after the arcade to spot Group 32A. The grave is a few yards from the broad path, just to the left behind a memorial to Mozart.
