And you&#8217;d be right. The animals put on quite a show with plenty of splashing: you have been warned.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"playgrounds\">Playgrounds and petting zoo<\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/playgroundlarge.jpg\" alt=\"An adventure playground\" class=\"wp-image-82576\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/playgroundlarge.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/playgroundlarge-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">(Part of the largest play area)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Several small play areas dot the entire area, but a large playground near the centre has climbing frames, tunnels, and other surprises.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This adventure area includes an adjacent petting zoo featuring rabbits, pygmy goats and Ouessant sheep (one of the world&#8217;s smallest sheep breeds) in an animal-friendly environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Look out, as well, for the fire salamander mini-climbing walls near the rainforest house. The small square in front of the latter also has a couple of water-driven installations to play with, which our kids always enjoyed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"food-and-drink\">Food and drink<\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/jumbosnackbar.jpg\" alt=\"Jumbo buffet snack bar\" class=\"wp-image-43061\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/jumbosnackbar.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/jumbosnackbar-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">(One of the frequent snack bars)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As you might expect, plenty of snack bars, cafes, and restaurants pop up around the zoo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you want to give the kids something local and different, try a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/eatingdrinking\/food\/langos\/\">Langos<\/a>: a thin fried circular potato snack that often comes in a size that lets you use it as a sun shade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you want something healthier, then consider the organic fare usually on sale in the Tirolerhof (see below). I can particularly recommend their Bergk\u00e4se cheese, though it might be a touch too strong for children. Consider the sharp taste a rite of passage into adulthood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"the-tirolerhof\">The Tirolerhof<\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/schoenbrunnzoowalkway.jpg\" alt=\"Aerial walkway in a wood\" class=\"wp-image-82577\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/schoenbrunnzoowalkway.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/schoenbrunnzoowalkway-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">(The aerial walkway up through the woods)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The zoo continues up the hill at the far side from the main entrance, where a wooded slope leads you to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/schonbrunn\/zoo\/tirolerhof\/\">Tirolerhof<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This complex includes a farmhouse and enclosures with rare breeds, a restaurant, and a lovely organic farm shop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The path up through the woods has some educational, themed trails (mostly labelled in German though on my most recent visit), with nice little bonus displays, such as a wood ant nest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div align=\"center\"><em>Ad:<\/em><br><\/div><div data-tiqets-widget=\"discovery\" data-cards-layout=\"horizontal\" data-content-type=\"product\" data-content-ids=\"974071,976418\" data-partner=\"visitingvienna\" data-tq-campaign=\"DA_ZooTech\"><\/div><script defer src=\"https:\/\/widgets.tiqets.com\/loader.js\"><\/script>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>One route also takes you along a raised walkway through the treetops.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Climbing the hill is a good way to tire the kids out a little, if you need them sleepy (or grumpy). Though a more comfortable alternative is&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"the-zoo-train\">The Zoo Train<\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/schoenbrunnzootrain.jpg\" alt=\"A small zoo train\" class=\"wp-image-82578\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/schoenbrunnzootrain.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/schoenbrunnzootrain-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">(The train takes the pain out of getting small kids up the hill to the Tirolerhof)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During the warmer seasons, a zoo train runs between the Tirolerhof and the elephant house.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiqets.com\/en\/vienna-attractions-c60335\/tickets-for-transfer-train-tirolerhof-and-zoo-p1055552\/?partner=visitingvienna&amp;tq_campaign=LG_Zootrain\" rel=\"sponsored\">ticket<\/a>* cost \u20ac3 for adults and \u20ac2 for children the last time I checked (April, 2025).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A similar train (the Panoramabahn) outside the zoo offers trips around the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sightseeing\/palace-of-schonbrunn\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"1672\">wider Sch\u00f6nbrunn complex<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"kumpf-animals\">Kumpf animals<\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/kumpforangutans.jpg\" alt=\"Kumpf bronze orangutans\" class=\"wp-image-43097\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/kumpforangutans.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/kumpforangutans-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">(The three wise monkeys)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kids seem to love the Kumpf bronze statues dotted around the zoo, which also make great photo motifs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gottfried Kumpf is a famous Austrian artist whose works include statues of distinctive animal figures; the kind you might find in a gorgeous children&#8217;s picture book.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>His contributions to Sch\u00f6nbrunn zoo include, for example, the frog prince and the three wise monkeys.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"wagons-for-hire\">Wagons-for-hire<\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/schoenbrunnzootrolleys.jpg\" alt=\"Green trolleys for carrying kids\" class=\"wp-image-82579\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/schoenbrunnzootrolleys.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/schoenbrunnzootrolleys-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">(Trolleys provided by the kids clothing company, JAKO-O)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A booth just north of the hippo house hires out little pull-along open-top wagons for a small fee (\u20ac4 at the time of writing) and \u20ac10 as a deposit. Take small notes and\/or change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The carts are a fun way to carry around the little ones. However, if you&#8217;re planning to go through the woods and up to the Tirolerhof, then that&#8217;s quite a climb with a wagon in tow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Note that the rental station may not always be open every day during less popular parts of the year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"the-big-cat-enclosure\">The big cat enclosure<\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/bigcatenclosure.jpg\" alt=\"Big cat enclosure\" class=\"wp-image-43099\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/bigcatenclosure.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/bigcatenclosure-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">(Here be cats)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I mention this not just for the tigers, leopards, and cheetahs. The big cat building includes a display area presenting conservation projects and featuring simple games that young kids might enjoy, like &#8220;Find the Red Panda.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Also, that covered area has buttons to press. And you can&#8217;t beat buttons to press.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"extra-animal-tips\">Extra animal tips<\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/giantpanda.jpg\" alt=\"A giant panda\" class=\"wp-image-43074\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/giantpanda.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/giantpanda-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">(Don&#8217;t forget the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/schonbrunn\/zoo\/giantpandas\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"183\">pandas<\/a>. I&#8217;ve seen the consequences if you do and the kids find out they missed them. Not pretty.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Obviously all the kiddies&#8217; favourites are inside the zoo: elephants, giraffes, monkeys, lions, etc., but let me throw out a few extra tips for you:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>If your kids enjoy (and can handle) the darker side of animal life, the indoor aquarium and terrarium have piranhas, jellyfish, giant spiders, scorpions, snakes, crocodiles, and bats. The meters and meters of glass leaf-cutter ant tunnels are kind of neat, too<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The giraffe house lets you be at eye level with these long-legged giants<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>If it&#8217;s winter and snowing, visit the reindeer: perfect for regaling the impressionable with some Santa-related stories<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Oh, and don&#8217;t miss the giant pandas.
