Wander Giza and studiously avoid looking at pyramids? Of course not.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So don&#8217;t miss <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/museums\/belvedere-sites\/kiss\/\">The Kiss<\/a> by Gustav Klimt at Belvedere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This genuinely world-famous and iconic painting hangs without fuss on one wall in the permanent exhibition area at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/museums\/belvedere-sites\/upper-belvedere-palace\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"3521\">Upper Belvedere<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You might find a few other people taking a look with you, given <em>The Kiss<\/em> is Vienna&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/museums\/top-10-art\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"24882\">most important artwork<\/a> and often appears near the top of global rankings, too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. None, perhaps, more so than the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/museums\/belvedere-sites\/franz-xaver-messerschmidt\/\">busts by Franz Xaver Messerschmidt<\/a>: a series of weird, wonderful and strangely fascinating sculpted heads that seem almost avant garde in their execution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Created (perhaps surprisingly) as long ago as the 18th century, Messerschmidt&#8217;s works would fit nicely in London&#8217;s Tate Modern or New York&#8217;s MoMA.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Belvedere owns sixteen of the character head busts, though not all may be viewable at any one time. On my last visit, ten of them formed their own display area on the first floor of Upper Belvedere (in the Baroque section of the permanent exhibition).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. One normally hangs on the first floor in Upper Belvedere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>The Kiss<\/em> gets the glory, but take time to view all the permanent displays at this upper palace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That innocent little piece of art sitting in one corner might be a Munch. Or a Schiele. Or a Rodin. To name but three of the world-famous artists featured there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Incidentally, while the upper palace grabs all the art plaudits, do check for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/museums\/belvedere-sites\/lower-belvedere\/#exhibitions\">special art exhibitions<\/a> at Lower Belvedere, too. Slip behind Belvedere lake<\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/belvederechristmasnight.jpg\" alt=\"Belvedere Christmas market scenic view\" class=\"wp-image-53925\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/belvederechristmasnight.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/belvederechristmasnight-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">(The view during the Christmas season, though the lake lights were missing when I last visited at the start of the 2025 Christmas season)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Most people focus on the Upper Belvedere interiors and art, along with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/museums\/belvedere-sites\/baroque-gardens\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"3395\">gardens<\/a> leading down to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/museums\/belvedere-sites\/lower-belvedere\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"3384\">Lower Belvedere palace<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But go around to the front of Upper Belvedere (the opposite side to the public entrance). Then walk out beyond the small lake and look back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This view makes an excellent photo of the palace. Ideally, wait until twilight to get the building lit up with a background of nighttime blue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you can, go when the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/christmasmarkets\/belvedere\/\">Belvedere Christmas market<\/a> fills the gap between palace and lake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The view across to the market and baroque building at dusk looks like something from a fairytale. I&#8217;m not kidding. I even put the photo opportunity at the top of my list of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/entertainment\/10-things-at-christmas\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"3459\">things to do at Christmas<\/a> when in Vienna.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Belvedere in general<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Before I get into specific tips, do check the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/museums\/belvedere-sites\/lower-belvedere\/#tickets-visitor-tips\">special exhibitions<\/a> on at Lower Belvedere. The Upper palace has the main permanent displays, but the Lower one often has world-class temporary art exhibitions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5. Some, however, remain pretty much as they were when the paint on those ceiling frescoes was still drying in the early 18th-century air.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You&#8217;ll spot those rooms from the innumerable reliefs, statues, paintings and other such designs venerating the life of the not-so-modest <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/culture\/prince-eugene-savoy\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"58031\">Prince Eugene<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Be sure to look up even when in the modern galleries, because the ceilings often retain their original state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Upper Belvedere&#8217;s interior also includes the gorgeous Marble Room on the first floor. So gorgeous, they used the location for the signing of the post-WWII Austrian Independence Treaty in 1955.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Pop up to the second floor for views down into that same room, allowing you a different perspective on the illusionist paintings and marbled delights.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div align=\"center\"><em>Ad:<\/em><br><\/div><div data-tiqets-widget=\"discovery\" data-cards-layout=\"horizontal\" data-slug-ids=\"exp206741,exp238032\" data-partner=\"visitingvienna\" data-tq-campaign=\"DA_ConcTour\"><\/div><script defer src=\"https:\/\/widgets.tiqets.com\/loader.js\"><\/script>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">6. Go back in time<\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/privy.jpg\" alt=\"View of the Salesian church dome\" class=\"wp-image-13652\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/privy.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/privy-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">(The dome is from a neighbouring church)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A ticket to the Lower Belvedere palace also allows you into the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/museums\/belvedere-sites\/kammergarten-privy-garden\/\">privy garden<\/a>, a little Baroque garden that provides some respite from any crowds and often features landscaped spring and summer blooms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Walk to the very back and then look around you; not a sign of anything modern in sight. Well, you might spot the occasional 20th-century roof (or construction crane) but careful positioning and use of hedge cover should keep it historical.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The view transports you to the time of Prince Eugene, albeit without the humongous wigs and poor sanitation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You get a similar effect by looking out the windows of the Belvedere <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/museums\/belvedere-sites\/orangery\/\">Orangerie<\/a>, if you stand in the right place in the windowed corridor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">7. Walk to the city centre<\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/fountainredarmy.jpg\" alt=\"Fountain and red army monument\" class=\"wp-image-43648\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/fountainredarmy.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/fountainredarmy-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">(The fountain and monument)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When you&#8217;re done with Belvedere, walk down to the lower palace and return to the city centre on foot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This route takes you across Schwarzenbergplatz with its huge <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/red-army-memorial\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"30069\">Red Army monument<\/a>, the giant <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/hochstrahlbrunnen-fountain\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"30035\">Hochstrahlbrunnen fountain<\/a>, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/schwarzenberg-monument\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"40807\">statue of Prince Schwarzenberg<\/a>, which are all otherwise slightly off the usual tourist walking routes. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Do this at the end of the day in summer and the fountain lights up in different colours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And, after all that, it&#8217;s time to reward yourself with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/eatingdrinking\/cafespubsbars\/coffee-houses\/\">coffee and cake<\/a>.
