These include stores and synagogues, but also reminders of humanity’s darkest hours and various exhibitions presenting Jewish art, culture, and history.

The Jewish Museum, in particular, has poignant and informative permanent exhibitions but also regular special exhibitions at its two sites (I always find these worth a visit).

Anyone wishing to explore both contemporary Jewish culture and the history of the community’s relationship with Vienna might want to begin at Book Shop Singer in the city centre.

A Jewish bookshop, café, and cultural meeting point, the store now hosts the Jewish Info Point for Vienna: an initiative of the Israelitische Kultusgemeinde Wien, with support from the city authorities and tourist organisations.

As well as a starting point for tours, the Info Point offers information in various languages about Jewish life in the city, both past and present, as well as tips concerning relevant events and activities. The location is no coincidence, being close to both the community’s city temple and the Vienna Wiesenthal Institute.

How to get to the Jewish Info Point

The book store is just a short walk from Schwedenplatz station, which is a stop on the U1 and U4 subway lines and tram lines 1 and 2. Given the location, it’s also easily reached on foot if you’re walking around Vienna’s historical centre.

Address: Book Shop Singer, Rabensteig 3, 1010 Vienna

The bookshop that hosted the Info Point closed its premises in October 2023.
