the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/culture\/austria-hungary\/\">revolution of 1848<\/a> began inside, for example.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Continuing the theme of political change&#8230;the first session of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/culture\/austria\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"12860\">post-WWI government<\/a> took place here in late 1918.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And the palais also hosted the 1945 negotiations that preceded the establishment of the second Austrian republic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The building itself traces its origins to the early 16th century, when the original house was converted for use as a Vienna base for representatives from the province of Lower Austria (German: <em>Nieder\u00f6sterreich<\/em>&#8230;hence the name).<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"365\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/palaisniederoesterreich1840.jpg\" alt=\"Painting of the Nieder\u00f6sterreich Landhaus in 1840\" class=\"wp-image-83782\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/palaisniederoesterreich1840.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/05\/palaisniederoesterreich1840-300x219.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">(The palais around 1840, before all the changes; Ledermann jun.; Wien Museum Inv.-Nr. 58891\/88; reproduced with permission under the terms of the CC0 licence)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A gothic chapel with beautifully-shaped rib vaults<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>An original renaissance chamber from 1572 with its carved wooden portal, giant caryatids, and a stunning wooden ceiling replete with gilded coats of arms from the reign of Emperor Maximilian II<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The Landtagssaal, constructed during the renaissance and famous for its baroque ceiling frescoes<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div align=\"center\"><em>Ad:<\/em><br><\/div><div data-tiqets-widget=\"discovery\" data-cards-layout=\"horizontal\" data-content-type=\"product\" data-content-ids=\"1029262,976190\" data-partner=\"visitingvienna\" data-tq-campaign=\"DA_HistoryTours\"><\/div><script defer src=\"https:\/\/widgets.tiqets.com\/loader.js\"><\/script>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The Landtagssaal regularly hosted concerts at a time when Vienna had no dedicated concert venue (this all changed with, for example, the construction of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/entertainment\/musikverein\/\">Musikverein<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Apparently, Franz Liszt performed there (as a child) in 1822 and Beethoven, too, and at least one Schubert work first saw the light of day within the palais.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Incidentally, the original connection to Lower Austria was never lost. It&#8217;s a private event location and partly occupied by the Austrian Federal Ministry for Europe, Integration and Foreign Affairs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The good news is that, as an event location, it occasionally hosts public events. Try the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/christmasmarkets\/palaisniederosterreich\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"21173\">Christmas market<\/a> in particular. And I&#8217;ve seen the palais open for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/entertainment\/events\/european-heritage-day\/\">European Heritage Day<\/a>, too<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All such events give you a chance to see several of the historical rooms, and accompanying tours get you into, for example, that remarkable renaissance chamber.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The palais also houses <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kunstraum.net\/\">Kunstraum Niederoesterreich<\/a>, which puts on a handful of art exhibitions in a wing of the palais each year (with free entry).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When you&#8217;re there, be sure to pop over the street to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/eatingdrinking\/cafespubsbars\/cafe-central\/\">Caf\u00e9 Central<\/a>: an absolutely gorgeous coffee house with equally breathtaking interiors. You&#8217;ll find it thanks to the queues outside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to get to Palais Nieder\u00f6sterreich<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The palais is easy to reach. Herrengasse starts at one end of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sightseeing\/hofburg\/\">Hofburg palace<\/a>, so you&#8217;re probably passing it as you <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/transport\/tours-overview\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"59926\">view the central sights<\/a> or follow my self-guided <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/transport\/walking-tour\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"50322\">walking route<\/a>. But if you want to travel direct:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Subway: The U3 line stops at Herrengasse.
