But the city&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/eatingdrinking\/cafespubsbars\/heuriger\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"30836\">Heuriger<\/a> wine taverns represent another tradition firmly anchored in Viennese life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Obviously, Austria&#8217;s capital also hosts a variety of pubs, bars, and restaurants&#8230;from Irish watering holes to Michelin star establishments (two 3-star, four 2-star, and eight 1-star restaurants the last time I checked in early 2026).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>TripAdvisor and similar are your friend in terms of reviews and recommendations, but I have my own personal tips below for coffee houses, caf\u00e9-confectioneries, and romantic spots, for example.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>People also regularly ask me about the famous Schnitzel-serving Figlm\u00fcller restaurants in the centre. Are they worth the long queues that often form outside? But which ones should you try?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I have  a list of some of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/eatingdrinking\/cafespubsbars\/coffee-houses\/\">best traditional caf\u00e9s<\/a> in the city, as suggested by me, friends and relatives. How I suffered: forced to visit each one to try the coffee and cake (often more than once, just to be sure).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"confectioneries\">Caf\u00e9-Confectioneries<\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/slukarathausplatz.jpg\" alt=\"Sluka Konditorei\" class=\"wp-image-44233\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/slukarathausplatz.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/slukarathausplatz-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">(Sluka opened in 1891)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These Viennese <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/eatingdrinking\/cafespubsbars\/konditorei\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"23020\">Konditoreien<\/a> (confectioneries) also have a long and illustrious history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Think of them as the coffee houses&#8217; sweeter sibling: caf\u00e9s with an unfeasibly large cake counter and an appetite for gossip. Some helpful advice for you:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Service is almost always at the table, often even in places that look like British pubs. Learn about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/eatingdrinking\/orderingpaying\/\">ordering and paying<\/a> for food and drink<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>And your bill very rarely includes that service; I can&#8217;t recall having ever seen it included, frankly. So you should tip waiting staff. Learn about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/eatingdrinking\/drinking-hours-and-age-limits\/\">drinking hours<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>And can you have a cigarette inside bars and restaurants? The short answer is &#8220;no&#8221;, but read up on local <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/visitorinfo\/smoking\/\">smoking regulations<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Finally, menus often come with a bunch of letters attached to each food description. These refer to allergens. Sunday shopping and 24hr shopping are not a thing in Vienna, barring a few exceptions<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/visitorinfo\/prices\/\">Is Vienna expensive?<\/a> Probably not as expensive as you might imagine.
