One of them &#8211; Placido Domingo &#8211; once received an 80-minute standing ovation for his Othello (a world record at the time of writing).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That Domingo anecdote is one of many you might hear on a guided tour from the Staatsoper&#8217;s staff, as you drift through an institution dripping in history and decor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All is not quite as it seems, however.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although constructed in 1869, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/culture\/wwii-vienna\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"69411\">WWII<\/a> bomb damage wreaked havoc on the building. But personal highlights for me on the tour I went on were&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The <strong>Teesalon<\/strong>: the average opera goer typically misses this sneak peek into the former private chamber of Emperor Franz Joseph<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Large wooden doors lead almost directly to the Emperor&#8217;s box and the room has more decorative elements that you can shake a libretto at.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The <strong>Schwindfoyer<\/strong>: a beautifully-restored intermission room dating back to the building&#8217;s construction<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>150-year-old chandeliers light the room, with the walls and ceilings graced by gilt floral decoration, frescoes, and a series of composer busts: Rossini, Mozart, Gluck, Schubert, Haydn, Beethoven, and others who knew their way around sheet music.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div align=\"center\"><em>Ad:<\/em><br><\/div><div data-tiqets-widget=\"discovery\" data-cards-layout=\"horizontal\" data-slug-ids=\"exp206741,exp238032\" data-partner=\"visitingvienna\" data-tq-campaign=\"DA_ConcTour\"><\/div><script defer src=\"https:\/\/widgets.tiqets.com\/loader.js\"><\/script>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The <strong>auditorium and stage<\/strong>: now the technology takes its turn to impress<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>A visit to the giant auditorium includes good views of the incredibly large stage with its beams, escalators, ropes and mysterious technologies for shifting scenes and setups when each evening brings a different opera.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We were lucky enough to witness the stagehands preparing for the next performance: ancient Egypt (<em>Aida<\/em>) gradually replaced 16th-century Cyprus (<em>Otello<\/em>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The <strong>Mahlersaal<\/strong>: an intermission room rebuilt in the 1950s, with tapestries portraying scenes from Mozart&#8217;s <em>Magic Flute<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In one unobtrusive corner sat a travelling piano that belonged to none other than <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/footsteps\/gustav-mahler\/\">Gustav Mahler<\/a>. Image courtesy of the Rijksmuseum)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>While the sights impress, perhaps the real highlights are the stories, anecdotes and facts whipped out by the tour guide. For example, the State Opera House has some 180,000 costumes at its disposal and 200 stagehands work every day to make those backstage changes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All-in-all, the tour&#8217;s a lovely way to see inside (literally and figuratively) one of the world&#8217;s greatest opera venues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"tickets\">Tickets &amp; visitor tips<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Understandably, no fixed schedule exists for tour times, especially during the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/entertainment\/opera\/when-is-the-opera-season\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"19354\">opera season<\/a> (usually September to June) when the nature of the ever-changing daily performances can limit access.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fortunately, the Staatsoper does provide an advance timetable, ticket info, and online booking opportunities <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wiener-staatsoper.at\/fuehrungen\/\">at their website<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Note that a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/vienna-pass-review\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"3960\">Vienna Pass sightseeing pass<\/a> includes one-time participation on the tour at the time of writing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The English tour should be available at all scheduled times, and everything was well-organised and swift on my visit; the opera tour is one of many <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/entertainment\/tours-historical-buildings\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"58561\">tours of historical buildings<\/a> available in Vienna.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And a final little tip should you wish to add another dash of elegance to the day: I enjoyed coffee and Apfelstrudel in the gorgeous <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/eatingdrinking\/cafespubsbars\/gerstner-palais-todesco\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"81841\">Gerstner caf\u00e9 and restaurant<\/a> opposite the opera house in Palais Todesco.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to get to the State Opera House<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>As such a dominant city centre building, you can&#8217;t miss the Staatsoper on your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/transport\/walking-tours\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"59674\">walking tours<\/a> of the old town.
