Feminist rappers or punk rockers. Singer songwriters or mavens of experimental electronic music.

The locations last time out included a waterborne stage in front of the giant baroque Karlskirche church, the church itself, the Wien Museum, the hallowed halls of the local university (TU Wien), and more.

Various side events and activities accompany the music, too, with around 60,000 people typically tuning in.

2026 dates, tickets & tips

(Curators for the 2026 event: composer & producer Wolfgang Lehmann and musician & artist Sofie Royer; press photo © Jasmin Baumgartner)

The 2026 Popfest takes place from July 23rd to 26th. Check with the official website for full details of the coming edition when available.

Attendance is usually free thanks to sponsors like the Arbeiterkammer Wien (the representative organisation for Vienna’s employees) and the Wiener Städtische insurance company.

If you want to extend the contemporary experience but switch media, then nip over the road to the neighbouring Künstlerhaus. This houses the art exhibitions of both the same-named artist association and the Albertina Modern.

And should you prefer the pop of the early 18th-century, then the Karlskirche hosts regular performances of Vivaldi’s The Four Seasons.

How to get to Popfest Wien

Popfest’s traditional home on Karlsplatz is not just a large central open space for outdoor events, including the fantastic divina art Christmas market: it also sits on top of one of the city’s main transport hubs.
