So movies that take you out of our reality and into stranger, more magical worlds&#8230;horror, fantasy, science fiction, surrealism&#8230;often films that don&#8217;t always get much time in conventional cinema showings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Consider it a pick and mix from the (sometimes darker) imaginations of the cinematic world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A mix that might throw out a <em>My Own Private Idaho<\/em>, but also a <em>Meatball Machine Kodoku<\/em>. A <em>Raiders of the Lost Ark<\/em> or an <em>Attack of the Lederhosen Zombies<\/em>. New releases or golden oldies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One year, for example, included two world premieres and an 11-film retrospective for the &#8220;found footage horror&#8221; genre (think <em>The Blair Witch Project<\/em>).<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"334\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/slash2024.jpg\" alt=\"Film still\" class=\"wp-image-74696\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/slash2024.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/slash2024-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">(Action film KILL directed by Nikhil Nagesh Bhat featured back in 2024; press photo courtesy of SLASH)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Dozens of films typically get showings: most of them in English or in the original language with English subtitles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Look for the full programme on the SLASH <a href=\"https:\/\/slashfilmfestival.com\/\">website<\/a> and relevant abbreviations: OV (in original language), OmU (ditto with subtitles), OmeU (ditto with English subtitles), eOV (in the original English).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Like any self-respecting film festival, SLASH has a surrounding programme of events, too, with a touch more joy and flair than many of its cousins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You might see star guests (Nicholas Cage once attended) or join the opening and closing parties, for example.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Incidentally, the same folk also usually host a mini-festival in late spring or early summer and make occasional guest appearances with selected films at other events.
