Enjoy yourself! We spent a lot of time there (most weekends, in fact) when we had young kids.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here some tips to get more from a trip&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"when-to-go\">When to go<\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/rainforesthouse.jpg\" alt=\"Entrance to the rainforest house\" class=\"wp-image-43062\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/rainforesthouse.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/rainforesthouse-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">(The rainforest house offers warmth in winter)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The zoo is one of the Viennese sights that opens every single day of the year, starting at 9am and closing between 4.30pm and 6.30pm, depending on the season (at the time of writing).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Note that some of the walk-in enclosures begin to shut up to an hour before the official closing time, and you can&#8217;t get in any later than 30 minutes before closing. So don&#8217;t leave your trip to late afternoon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As one of the most popular attractions in Vienna for both tourists and locals, the zoo can get busy: especially during the summer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A lot of young Viennese families have annual passes, for example, and use the zoo much like you&#8217;d take your kids down the park. Herds of prams graze their way across the walking routes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, in the summer, consider visiting midweek rather than at the weekend.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/giantpanda.jpg\" alt=\"A giant panda\" class=\"wp-image-43074\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/giantpanda.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/giantpanda-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">(Not available for cuddles&#8230;)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In chillier seasons, don&#8217;t be put off by cold weather or rain: the zoo has plenty of indoor enclosures and displays, including a rainforest house, aquarium and terrarium, bird houses, conservation house, polarium, polar bear world, etc. etc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Bonus tips<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>If you&#8217;re pressed for time, skip the wooded, sloped rear area of the zoo. The more international <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/schonbrunn\/zoo\/animals\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"176\">animals and enclosures<\/a> live mostly on the lower levels. Reverse that last advice if you&#8217;re interested in farm animals and Austrian flora and fauna<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Pick up a plan at the entrance, which also lists any feeding times (tip: watch the sea lions being fed)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Oh, and whatever else you might do there, do not forget to visit the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/schonbrunn\/zoo\/giantpandas\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"183\">Giant Pandas<\/a>: a new pair arrived in early 2025 and can now be seen in an expanded and fully refurbished enclosure<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"zoo-ticket-tips\">Zoo ticket tips<\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/ticketmachine.jpg\" alt=\"Zoo ticket machine\" class=\"wp-image-43063\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/ticketmachine.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/ticketmachine-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">(One of the ticket machines spotted on my last visit)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Queues for the ticket counters at the entrances can get long during peak seasons and times, especially if the weather is good. Which makes purchasing <a rel=\"sponsored\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tiqets.com\/en\/tiergarten-schonbrunn-tickets-l141990\/?partner=visitingvienna&amp;tq_campaign=LG_ZooVenue\">advance zoo tickets<\/a>* online a strong option.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I last went on a Sunday in the middle of February and the zoo was still busy. However, machines at the main entrances sold day tickets (cards only as payment) and had no queue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another alternative is, for example, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/vienna-pass-review\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"3960\">Vienna Pass<\/a>. This covers numerous activities and\/or attractions and includes one-time free entry to the zoo: simply go straight to the ticket barriers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"facilities\">Facilities<\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/zooinfocentre.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/zooinfocentre.jpg\" alt=\"Zoo information centre\" class=\"wp-image-43181\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/zooinfocentre.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/zooinfocentre-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">(The info centre)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The zoo provides all the facilities you expect from a modern institution. The building just inside the main entrance, for example, has an information point and lockers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Toilets, drinking water fountains and baby changing facilities also appear throughout the zoo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Just about everywhere is accessible with a pram or wheelchair, though some parts of the zoo (like the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/schonbrunn\/zoo\/tirolerhof\/\">Tirolerhof<\/a>) are up relatively steep hills and slopes, and some areas (like the aquarium) get quite crowded at peak times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Don&#8217;t worry about language. Most information is available in English, too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div align=\"center\"><em>Ad:<\/em><br><\/div><div data-tiqets-widget=\"discovery\" data-cards-layout=\"horizontal\" data-content-type=\"product\" data-content-ids=\"974071,976418\" data-partner=\"visitingvienna\" data-tq-campaign=\"DA_ZooTech\"><\/div><script defer src=\"https:\/\/widgets.tiqets.com\/loader.js\"><\/script>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"eating-and-drinking\">Eating and drinking<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The main area has a large open-plan food buffet, and other smaller buffets, caf\u00e9s and snack bars dot the zoo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Habsburg rulers used to take breakfast in the central pavilion back in the 1700s and that now houses a full-service restaurant. As a bonus, you no longer run the risk of being kicked out to make space for a passing archduke.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you need to sit down indoors, visit that central pavilion or the large caf\u00e9 in the Orang Utan area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another full restaurant (the Tirolergarten) sits on top of the hill at the back of the complex, serving typical country fare. This is also accessible to visitors from outside the zoo.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/jumbosnackbar.jpg\" alt=\"Jumbo buffet snack bar\" class=\"wp-image-43061\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/jumbosnackbar.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/jumbosnackbar-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">(One of the snack bars)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/schonbrunn\/zoo\/tirolerhof\/\">farmhouse<\/a> next to the Tirolergarten, a farm shop has always sold simple but superb open sandwiches and pastries on all my visits.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Note, again, that all of these places can get busy at peak times, so time your meal breaks accordingly. Also, not all are open year-round.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you want to bring your own food and drink, the zoo offers a fair amount of outdoor seating: benches and even picnic tables.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"how-to-get-to-the-zoo\">How to get to the zoo<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The zoo has three entrances:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"main-entrance\">Main entrance<\/h4>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/schoenbrunnsideentrance.jpg\" alt=\"Zoo-side entrance to Sch\u00f6nbrunn park\" class=\"wp-image-48550\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/schoenbrunnsideentrance.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/schoenbrunnsideentrance-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">(This gateway into the Sch\u00f6nbrunn park complex takes you round to the main zoo entrance)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The zoo&#8217;s main entrance is on the west side of the Sch\u00f6nbrunn complex and easily reached from Hietzing station, which is one stop on the U4 subway after Sch\u00f6nbrunn station and also a stop on the tram lines 10 and 60.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After you exit Hietzing, follow the wall of the park around to the right until you come to the large park entrance next to the Lindt chocolate shop (tempting to spend a few minutes here).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Go inside the park and keep to the path around to the right, walking past the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/schonbrunn\/gardens-park\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"15260\">landscaped gardens<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/schonbrunn\/wuestenhaus\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"170\">Desert House<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/schonbrunn\/palmhouse\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"141\">Palm House<\/a> to reach the zoo.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That park entrance also has its own bus stop (Am Platz), served by the 56A, 56B, 58A, and 58B buses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"palace-entrance\">Palace entrance<\/h4>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/schoenbrunnforecourt.jpg\" alt=\"Sch\u00f6nbrunn forecourt\" class=\"wp-image-44660\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/schoenbrunnforecourt.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/schoenbrunnforecourt-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">(The front entrance to the palace area)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you&#8217;ve visiting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/schonbrunn\/gettingthere\/\">Sch\u00f6nbrunn Palace<\/a>, simply head toward the hill and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/schonbrunn\/gloriette\/\">Gloriette<\/a> from the main palace building and walk along the right edge of the open landscaped gardens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the bottom of the hill, after passing the entrance to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/schonbrunn\/maze-labyrinth\/\">maze<\/a> and to the right of the large <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/schonbrunn\/neptune-fountain\/\">Neptune Fountain<\/a> complex, is a zoo entrance. The large banners and signs mean you really can&#8217;t miss it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"tirolerhof-entrance\">Tirolerhof entrance<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>This zoo entrance lies at the back of the Sch\u00f6nbrunn park area on top of the hill.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Two nearby bus stops are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Montecuccoliplatz: served by the 8A, 56A, 56B, 58A and 58B bus lines<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Klimtgasse: also served by the 8A<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The 56 and 58 buses all leave from Hietzing subway station.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It&#8217;s a bit of a walk from the initial park entrance through to the zoo&#8217;s entrance at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/schonbrunn\/zoo\/tirolerhof\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"188\">Tirolerhof part<\/a> of the complex. And another walk down the hill to the main enclosures. Might only make sense if you&#8217;re using Sch\u00f6nbrunn&#8217;s rear car park (see below).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"parking\">Parking<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>A large paid car park sits on Sch\u00f6nbrunner Schlo\u00dfstra\u00dfe, opposite the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/museums\/belvedere-sites\/orangery\/\">Orangerie<\/a> part of the palace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you want to enter the zoo from the rear Tirolerhof side, another car park sits at the top of Sch\u00f6nbrunn along Seckendorff-Gudent-Weg.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Note this second car park is covered by the city-wide <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/transport\/parking\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"867\">street parking zone<\/a>, which means you need a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/transport\/parkschein\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"2552\">Parkschein<\/a> during the days and hours when the zone rules apply.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For more zoo details, take a peek at my <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sightseeing\/palace-of-schonbrunn\/vienna-zoo\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"1674\">overview<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Elsewhere I deal with animal highlights.
