Most focus on well-known Mozart and Strauss pieces. He actually performed at the venue&#8217;s opening, where he introduced a new polka.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Palais Coburg<\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/palaiscoburg.jpg\" alt=\"Palais Coburg luxury hotel\" class=\"wp-image-42678\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/palaiscoburg.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/palaiscoburg-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">(Now one of Vienna&#8217;s leading hotels)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Two of Strauss&#8217;s anglophile dances premiered at Palais Coburg (at Coburgbastei 4 in the centre of town).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You might describe the <em>Albion Polka<\/em> and <em>Windsor-Kl\u00e4nge waltz<\/em> as musical diplomacy, since they allegedly formed part of attempts to improve relations between the Austrian and British empires in the middle of the 19th century.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today&#8217;s palais is now a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/accommodation\/fivestarhotels\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"18\">luxury hotel<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Theater an der Wien<\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/papagenotor.jpg\" alt=\"Papagenotor statuary\" class=\"wp-image-44223\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/papagenotor.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/papagenotor-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">(The Papagenotor at the Theater an der Wien)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some of Strauss&#8217;s compositions premiered at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/entertainment\/opera\/theater-wien\/\">Theater an der Wien<\/a>, one of Vienna&#8217;s three opera houses. Mozart&#8217;s librettist for <em>The Magic Flute<\/em> opened the location back in 1801.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Strauss operettas <em>Die Fledermaus<\/em> (1874), <em>Das Spitzentuch der K\u00f6nigin<\/em> (1880) and <em>The Gypsy Baron<\/em> (1885) were all first performed here, for example.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Rathaus<\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/rathaustoday.jpg\" alt=\"The Rathaus\" class=\"wp-image-45794\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/rathaustoday.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/rathaustoday-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">(City hall; the square in front hosts numerous large annual events)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another notable venue hosting a premiere was the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/rathaus-2\/\">Rathaus<\/a> (Vienna&#8217;s city hall). The <em>Rathausball-T\u00e4nze<\/em> waltz first played there in 1890 at a ball (the first ever &#8220;Ball der Stadt Wien&#8221;). Strauss dedicated the piece to his &#8220;hometown of Vienna&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div align=\"center\"><em>Ad:<\/em><br><\/div><div data-tiqets-widget=\"discovery\" data-cards-layout=\"horizontal\" data-content-type=\"product\" data-content-ids=\"1084652,1029872\" data-partner=\"visitingvienna\" data-tq-campaign=\"DA_Strauss\"><\/div><script defer src=\"https:\/\/widgets.tiqets.com\/loader.js\"><\/script>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"top-strauss-locations\">Strauss: his life<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Some Strauss biographical locations have stayed intact in one form or another across the decades, with a few even open to the public.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"place-of-birth\">Place of birth<\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/straussplaquebirth.jpg\" alt=\"Plaque at Strauss's birthplace\" class=\"wp-image-46798\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/straussplaquebirth.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/straussplaquebirth-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">(A plaque reveals the importance of the location)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Vienna had the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/entertainment\/events\/johann-strauss-2025\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"50442\">Johann Strauss festival year<\/a> in 2025 to celebrate the composer&#8217;s 200th birthday: he was born on October 25th, 1825 in a suburb just outside the city in what is now Vienna&#8217;s 7th district.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the time, the street was called Rofranogasse, but this later changed to Lerchenfelder Stra\u00dfe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Visit number 15 on that street and you won&#8217;t find the original house. But you will see a plaque on the newer building that replaced it, which says (my rough translation):<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>The house Johann Strauss the son was born in on October 25th, 1825 stood at this location. Dedicated to their honorary member by the Wiener M\u00e4nnergesangverein<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>The M\u00e4nnergesangverein is a male voice choir founded in 1843 that still exists today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">School<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Strauss attended the Schottengymnasium, an old and prestigious private school in the very centre of Vienna that continues today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can see the premises from the outside on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/freyung-2\/\">Freyung<\/a> in the 1st district, within the abbey complex that includes a rather nice <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/museums\/schottenstift-museum\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"22838\">museum<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/schottenkirche\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"27651\">church<\/a> (and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/eatingdrinking\/cafespubsbars\/cafe-diglas-schottenstift\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"54085\">coffee house<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Wedding(s)<\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/stephansdomsouthtower.jpg\" alt=\"View of Stephansdom and south tower\" class=\"wp-image-42836\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/stephansdomsouthtower.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/stephansdomsouthtower-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">(Stephansdom)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Henrietta Treffz said &#8220;I do&#8221; to Strauss in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/stefansdom\/\">Stephansdom<\/a> (Vienna&#8217;s main cathedral) in 1862. And he married his second wife, Angelika Dittrich, in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/karlskirche\/\">Karlskirche<\/a> (the huge baroque church overlooking Karlsplatz square) in 1878.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Both churches are open to the public, though you typically need a ticket to see inside both in full.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"the-strauss-apartment\">The Strauss apartment<\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/strausswohnung.jpg\" alt=\"The Strausswohnung on Praterstra\u00dfe\" class=\"wp-image-46795\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/strausswohnung.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/strausswohnung-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">(Strauss wrote his most famous waltz inside this building)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the maestro&#8217;s violins sits alongside various other items from the Strauss household in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/footsteps\/strauss-apartment\/\">Strausswohnung<\/a>, which provided Johann and Henrietta with a home for several years in the late 1860s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is where <em>The Blue Danube<\/em> escaped from musical imagination onto paper.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sightseeing\/vienna-museums\/wien-museum\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"26812\">Wien Museum<\/a> maintains the apartment as a mini-museum, with various displays (in German and English), including other such former possessions as a grand piano and house organ.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Note that the apartment is closed at the time of writing, and I await details of the reopening date.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"the-fledermaus-house\">The Fledermaus House<\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/fledermaushouse.jpg\" alt=\"The Fledermaus House\" class=\"wp-image-46799\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/fledermaushouse.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/fledermaushouse-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">(Another original Strauss residence)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another plaque hangs on the wall of the private <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/footsteps\/fledermaus-house\/\">Fledermaus house<\/a>, since Strauss lived here between 1870 and 1878. Back then, the name of the street was Igelgasse. This is also where he <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/footsteps\/johann-strauss-grave\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"5683\">passed away<\/a> in 1899.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Just a few days later, the city changed the street name in his honour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Unfortunately, WWII bombs destroyed the building, so the one you see there now is a relic of the 1960s. This includes a cluster of composer graves (group 32A) that has Schubert, Brahms, Beethoven and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/footsteps\/johann-strauss-grave\/\">Strauss<\/a> all within a <em>sotto voce<\/em> whisper of each other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Strauss&#8217;s third wife, Adele, is buried with him.
