This typically addresses some aspect of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/contemporary-art\/\">Viennese contemporary art<\/a>, such as a solo exhibition for a particular iconic artist or a review of some genre, topic or era.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/museums\/past-exhibitions-wien-museum\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"49484\">Recent exhibitions<\/a> have covered, for example (just to give you a flavour), a look at Viennese street photography through the decades, the interaction between art and politics during (and after) the Nazi period in Vienna, and the life and work of architect Richard Neutra.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A smaller room hosts the <em>Startgalerie <\/em>exhibition space, designed to encourage and support new artists. Guest curatorial teams hold group exhibitions there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"the-artothek\">The Artothek<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If you&#8217;re planning a longer stay in the city, then the Artothek within the musa building might pique your interest. Note that the location may close temporarily during the period between exhibitions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The musa counter also has a few items for sale: mainly exhibition catalogues, postcards, CDs, DVDs, and a handful of souvenirs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"special\">Special exhibitions<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>The current schedule for the main MUSA exhibition at the time of writing is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>Leopold Kessler<\/em> (until May 17th, 2026): a mid-career exhibition for the Austrian artist best known for his interventions and works in public spaces, often created with a significant slice of humour<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Next up:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>Condensations<\/em>: the oeuvre of Heliane Wiesauer-Reiterer, a genuinely universal artist (July 2nd to November 29th, 2026)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>The Image Generator<\/em>: solo exhibition for Karl Heinz Koller, best known for his Configurations series of photographs that seem like digital constructions but date from before the availability of digital technology (July 2nd to November 29th, 2026)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Incidentally, film buffs might want to stand on the colonnade outside the musa: this was used twice as a location in the movie <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/songsfilms\/woman-in-gold-locations\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"67389\">The Woman in Gold<\/a>: once for a Nazi parade and then later for a chase scene.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"how-to-get-to-the-musa\">How to get to the musa<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>The musa sits opposite the north wing of the Rathaus (city hall), so is easily reached if you&#8217;re <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/transport\/walking-tour\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"50322\">meandering around the city centre<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite the central location, the premises lack any great history, largely because the land formed part of the open ground that lay in front of the city fortifications until the late 19th century.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Subway: the closest stations are Schottentor and Rathaus on the U2 line.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tram\/bus: Go two streets in practically any direction from the musa and you hit a tram stop.
