Not only is this brilliant TV series set in Vienna, but they filmed a lot of Seasons 1, 2 and 4 here (and parts of Season 3).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Since we live locally, we did investigative work of our own and tracked down as many Vienna Blood film locations as possible (with help from friends and family).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This article covers Season 1 and some recurring locations. Note that episodes are numbered as shown in Austria: one for each case. So Episode 2 here might be Episodes 3-4 in the USA, for example)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let us begin with some of the locations that repeat across the episodes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Before we do, just a note that we simply matched what we saw on the screen to our local knowledge of Vienna. So most of the places we recognized tend to feature in outdoor scenes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here goes&#8230;(no guarantees on accuracy for everything!)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"the-police-station\">The police station<\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/policestation.jpg\" alt=\"The University Archive\" class=\"wp-image-48692\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/policestation.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/policestation-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">(A university archive and occasional early 1900s police station)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Took a while to find this, but the building used for exterior shots of the police station where Inspector Reinhardt works is the former library of Vienna University.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Constructed in the late 18th century, the building now houses the Vienna University Archive, an austere institution that itself dates back to the middle ages.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/billrothhaus.jpg\" alt=\"Entrance to the Billrothhaus\" class=\"wp-image-64118\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/billrothhaus.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/billrothhaus-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">(The College of Physicians in Vienna and part-time turn-of-the-century police station)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In season two (and maybe later?), the Billrothhaus in Vienna&#8217;s 9th district served as the interior of the police station and its archive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The house was built in 1893 by and for the College of Physicians in Vienna, and they still have their headquarters inside. (Thanks to an eagle-eyed reader for spotting that, so we could visit and confirm!)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Season Four, the outside and entrance hall shots of the police station <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/songsfilms\/vienna-blood-season-4\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"78652\">move elsewhere<\/a> to Palais Hatzenberg-F\u00fcrstenberg and the MAK museum respectively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"the-liebermann-s-home\">The Liebermann home<\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/landstrassehauptstrasse.jpg\" alt=\"Villa on Landstrasse Hauptstrasse\" class=\"wp-image-48693\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/landstrassehauptstrasse.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/landstrassehauptstrasse-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">(Villa Mautner-Jaeger)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When Max Liebermann returns or leaves home, he uses the entrance you can see on the right of the photo above, with a wall and gate behind. The house sits on Landstra\u00dfe Hauptstra\u00dfe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A kind reader tells me this is the 1902 Villa Mautner-Jaeger built for Hertha Mauthner von Markhof, who belonged to one of Vienna&#8217;s great entrepreneurial families.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/herzjesuchurch.jpg\" alt=\"Herz Jesu church\" class=\"wp-image-48694\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/herzjesuchurch.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/herzjesuchurch-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">(Herz Jesu church)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>When the camera switches perspective to show Max leaving the premises through the large wrought iron gate (in Episode 2, for example), the portal and windows of a church appear in the background. This is the 1906 Herz Jesu church on the other side of the Landstra\u00dfe Hauptstra\u00dfe road.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"the-hospital\">The hospital<\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/ottowagnerspital.jpg\" alt=\"Otto Wagner Spital\" class=\"wp-image-48695\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/ottowagnerspital.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/ottowagnerspital-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">(The Otto Wagner Areal)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At least some of the exterior shots of the hospital where Max works show the former Otto Wagner Hospital (now the Otto Wagner Areal), named for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/footsteps\/otto-wagner-in-vienna\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"4917\">famous architect<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The location is remarkably authentic, since they built this institution as a psychiatric hospital in the first decade of the 20th century. In the raised views, the golden dome of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/footsteps\/kirche-am-steinhof\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"63812\">Kirche am Steinhof church<\/a> appears in the background.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"the-natural-history-museum\">The Natural History Museum<\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/naturalhistorymuseum.jpg\" alt=\"The Natural History Museum building\" class=\"wp-image-43718\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/naturalhistorymuseum.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/naturalhistorymuseum-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">(View from Maria-Theresien-Platz)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Amelia Lydgate works in Vienna&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/museums\/natural-history-museum\/\">Naturhistorisches Museum<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We see various shots of the museum&#8217;s front (if you look closely at the long-distance TV shots of the entrance steps, you can see the bronze elephant statue they put up in 2004).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Various interior scenes must have been filmed in the museum, too, such as the stuffed mammal displays that Max views in Episode 2.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The museum also features heavily in the final episode of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/songsfilms\/vienna-blood-season-2\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"38572\">Season 2<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"the-ferris-wheel\">The Ferris Wheel<\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/riesenrad.jpg\" alt=\"Riesenrad cabins\" class=\"wp-image-41890\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/riesenrad.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/riesenrad-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">(A famous Vienna landmark)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Built at the end of the 19th century, the famous <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/riesenrad\/\">Riesenrad<\/a> features as an obvious highlight in the opening credits to Vienna Blood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This grand old Ferris wheel also serves as a key location in the denouement to Episode 1, when Max and the inspector confront their adversary.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That end scene also includes the carousel and square directly next to the Riesenrad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The location is no stranger to filming, having played important roles in such renowned movies as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/songsfilms\/third-man-locations\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"31222\">The Third Man<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/songsfilms\/before-sunrise-locations\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"36997\">Before Sunrise<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"stephansdom-cathedral\">Stephansdom cathedral<\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/stephansdomsouthtower.jpg\" alt=\"View of Stephansdom and south tower\" class=\"wp-image-42836\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/stephansdomsouthtower.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/stephansdomsouthtower-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">(The mosaic roof replaced the one damaged in the aftermath of WWII)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The cityscape in the opening credits to each TV epsiode and various long shots over Vienna feature the iconic patterned roof and towers of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/stefansdom\/\">St Stephen&#8217;s Cathedral<\/a> (Stephansdom). Just round the corner is the rather nice Griechenbeisl restaurant, where we celebrated my wife&#8217;s 40th birthday, as well as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/eatingdrinking\/cafespubsbars\/fenster-cafe\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"85506\">Fenster Caf\u00e9<\/a> with its unusual takeaway Fensterccino coffee option.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The same street appears later in the episode, when Max and the Inspector drive to the cemetery in a carriage.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/sanktulrichsplatz.jpg\" alt=\"Sankt-Ulrichs-Platz\" class=\"wp-image-48697\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/sanktulrichsplatz.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/sanktulrichsplatz-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">(Sankt-Ulrichs-Platz)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The second set of shots in the opening sequence show Sankt-Ulrichs-Platz, a small square around the church of St. Ulrich. You might recognise it from appearances in the movie <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/songsfilms\/woman-in-gold-locations\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"67389\">Woman in Gold<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The stone steps on the right that lead up to the church entrance feature statues of four saints. The background building is Caf\u00e9 Morgenstern, where interior bar scenes might have been filmed (?).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Both Griechengasse and Sankt-Ulrichs-Platz appear again in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/songsfilms\/vienna-blood-season-3\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"54655\">Season 3<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"the-beethovenfries\">The Beethovenfries<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Vienna Blood introduces us to the character of Clara as she and Max admire the Beethovenfries painted by Gustav Klimt. You can see <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/footsteps\/beethoven-frieze\/\">the 1902 original<\/a> over at the Secession building.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"the-rooftop-chase\">The rooftop chase<\/h4>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/palaispallavicini.jpg\" alt=\"Palais Pallavicini\" class=\"wp-image-47298\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/palaispallavicini.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/palaispallavicini-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">(Palais Pallavicini on Josefsplatz)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Max and the inspector chase Otto Braun across the rooftops of Vienna.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first rooftop belongs to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/palais-pallavicini\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"31243\">Palais Pallavicini<\/a>, a gorgeous 18th-century townhouse next to the Hofburg palace (and, incidentally, Harry Lime&#8217;s apartment in <em>The Third Man<\/em>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Palais faces the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/winter-palace\/prunksaal\/\">National Library<\/a>, which appears in the background of the shot. Inside you find the extraordinary former court library.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A little later in the pursuit and you can see the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/votivkirche\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"27630\">Votivkirche church<\/a> behind the actors. They built this mid-19th century church in thanks for Emperor Franz Joseph surviving an assassination attempt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Max and Inspector Reinhardt eventually catch up with the miscreant where the underground part of the River Wien emerges into the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/stadtpark\/\">Stadtpark<\/a> city park (I think).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That same area also makes an appearance in the 2022 Amazon <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/songsfilms\/sachertorte-movie-locations\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"58231\">Sachertorte rom-com<\/a> and it&#8217;s not the last time you&#8217;ll see the Stadtpark in Vienna Blood: it has a starring role in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/songsfilms\/vienna-blood-season-2\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"38572\">Season 2<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"various-street-scenes\">Various street scenes<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>The wonderful street scenes in Vienna Blood proved hardest for us to track down. Although Vienna has three historic and prestigious opera houses, the building that Max and the Inspector enter is actually the Volkstheater (a theatre), completed in 1889.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"episode-3\">Episode 3<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>OK, not a lot of locations to report on here, since most of the action in the final episode of Season 1 of Vienna Blood takes place outside of Vienna. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Schloss Grafenegg in Lower Austria plays the part of the school where various misdeeds go on. It takes around an hour by car to reach the castle from Vienna.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"cafe-sperl\">Caf\u00e9 Sperl<\/h4>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/cafesperl1.jpg\" alt=\"Front of Caf\u00e9 Sperl\" class=\"wp-image-47289\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/cafesperl1.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/cafesperl1-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">(A popular filming location because of the historical d\u00e9cor)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One exception is the coffee house where Max and the Inspector play billiards. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/eatingdrinking\/cafespubsbars\/cafe-sperl\/\">Caf\u00e9 Sperl<\/a> dates back to 1880 and is one of my favourite caf\u00e9s: friendly staff, historical interior, decent prices. We see it again in Season 2.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our research continues, so watch this space for more Vienna Blood locations as we find them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>P.S. The name, Vienna Blood, echoes that of a famous waltz and operetta by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/footsteps\/johann-strauss\/\">Johann Strauss II<\/a>. The original German-language title for Strauss&#8217;s work is Wiener Blut, which actually translates literally to Viennese Blood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"season-2\">Bonus: behind-the-scenes<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>By pure chance I came across the Season 2 production crew on Jodok-Fink-Platz in the 8th district. This is a lovely square dominated by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/piaristenkirche-church\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"27732\">Piaristenkirche church<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The actual day&#8217;s filming was due elsewhere and the square simply provided a convenient spot to park the trailers etc..
