Though maybe that was the locals eating out for a bit of relief.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now you might argue that popularity results from good marketing. But having eaten there, I reckon it&#8217;s down to a reputation built on decent food and service. (And probably some good marketing thrown in as well.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The original restaurant is on Wollzeile, but we visited the &#8220;second&#8221; home of the Schnitzel at Figlm\u00fcller B\u00e4ckergasse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So let&#8217;s review the atmosphere, the service, and the food.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The atmosphere<\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/wienerschnitzel.jpg\" alt=\"Wiener Schnitzel\" class=\"wp-image-45967\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/wienerschnitzel.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/wienerschnitzel-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">(Vienna&#8217;s culinary queen and trademark dish: the Schnitzel)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although relatively new, the B\u00e4ckerstra\u00dfe location exuded a period charm. You could easily imagine some chap sitting there in a bowler hat enjoying some pan-fried liver while his master&#8217;s horses and carriage wait outside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The decor seemed a fine compromise between an old-fashioned inn and a smart wine bar. A vaulted brickwork ceiling with dark open cabinets full of wine bottles set an elegant tone. But the wooden (oak?) tables and brass fittings felt down to earth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The noble touches &#8211; a carafe for your apple spritzer, a decent napkin &#8211; were subtle. This put even the casual tourist at ease, a feeling helped by the lack of pressure to eat up and move on, despite a full restaurant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On that subject, I&#8217;d recommend you book in advance, especially if you have a group. Save yourself any wait and frustration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We went at lunchtime on a cold February weekday. Probably the quietest time of the year in Vienna, yet the restaurant filled up quickly (though I&#8217;m told they have additional space for busier times and seasons). Even so, queues really do seem to be the norm here for those who don&#8217;t book in advance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div align=\"center\"><em>Ad:<\/em><br><\/div><div data-tiqets-widget=\"discovery\" data-cards-layout=\"horizontal\" data-slug-ids=\"exp206741,exp238032\" data-partner=\"visitingvienna\" data-tq-campaign=\"DA_ConcTour\"><\/div><script defer src=\"https:\/\/widgets.tiqets.com\/loader.js\"><\/script>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The food<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Although it&#8217;s all about the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/eatingdrinking\/food\/wiener-schnitzel\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"45\">Schnitzel<\/a>, the menu covered many elements of traditional Viennese fare. So you could enjoy the aforementioned pan-fried liver or goulash, for example.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Figlm\u00fcller is not super expensive, but not cheap, either. To give you an idea of what to expect, a pork Schnitzel cost \u20ac21.90 last time I checked (September, 2025).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ah, yes, back to that Schnitzel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/eatingdrinking\/vegetarian\/\">vegetarian<\/a>, I&#8217;m not the ideal candidate to pass judgement. My wife, however, claims it was genuinely excellent and suitably tenderised before cooking. And she&#8217;s 100% Viennese carnivore.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Figlm\u00fcller Schnitzel would certainly trigger UFO warnings at radar stations should one ever fly through the air. But we experienced the opposite.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Should an asteroid hurtle towards earth&#8217;s orbit, I hope to have our waiter as a companion on the long wait to see if the celestial body passes safely or wipes out civilisation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The waiter&#8217;s brand of cheerful optimism would ease the tension and have us smiling and waving as the giant mass streaked by in a plume of fire and smoke.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In other words, he was great. Attentive, friendly, obliging and with a ready smile and laugh. How he manages to remain authentic while inevitably making the same jokes again and again shall remain one of life&#8217;s mysteries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And, watching the other waiters from afar, all were smiling and chatting away. I even caught one singing the Spiderman song as he climbed the stairs from the basement. Marvellous. Though I wonder if things might get less relaxed during busier seasons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, although this reads like an advertisement, I have to say we genuinely and thoroughly enjoyed our Figlm\u00fcller experience. But in the interests of scientific objectivity, I should point out something negative, so here goes&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We didn&#8217;t get water with our coffee and had to ask for it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A shocking breach of etiquette. Well, perhaps not that shocking. It&#8217;s a question of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/eatingdrinking\/coffee-house-experience\/\">Viennese coffee culture<\/a>, though.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Visitor tips<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If you&#8217;re looking for more of a coffee-oriented caf\u00e9-restaurant type experience, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/eatingdrinking\/cafespubsbars\/kaffee-alt-wien\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"64790\">Kaffee Alt Wien<\/a> sits almost opposite in a renaissance townhouse (though mostly reconstructed after WWII damage).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And if you wish to feel like you earned the calorie intake at Figlm\u00fcller, then pop around the corner and climb the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/south-tower-stephansdom\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"5430\">south tower<\/a> of Stephansdom cathedral. A trip up and back down involves 686 steps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You might also build a meal into an evening dinner and concert experience. The nearby <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/footsteps\/mozarthaus\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"5858\">Mozarthaus<\/a> has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/entertainment\/bosendorfer-saal\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"11115\">regular concerts<\/a>, as does the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiqets.com\/en\/st-stephen-s-cathedral-concerts-tickets-l238032\/?partner=visitingvienna&amp;tq_campaign=LG_Steph\" rel=\"sponsored\">cathedral itself<\/a>*.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to find Figlm\u00fcller<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Figlm\u00fcller has various premises across the city centre, but the two prime Schnitzel restaurants sit close to each other.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Subway: both locations require just a short walk from Stephansplatz station (U1 and U3 lines), but can be reached from Schwedenplatz (U1 and U4) and Stubentor (U3), too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tram\/bus: the 1A, 2A and 3A bus lines that travel through the old town stop at nearby Stephansplatz.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Address: Wollzeile 5 (the original premises) and B\u00e4ckerstra\u00dfe 6 are both in Vienna&#8217;s first district | <a href=\"https:\/\/figlmueller.at\/\">Website<\/a> (for menus, online reservations, all locations, etc.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div align=\"center\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/d\/u\/0\/embed?mid=1IxPFEhDg3FsX7IS7iCoTg5wgA-9Mi0Cq\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A lot of tourists find their way into Figlm\u00fcller, known for their Wiener Schnitzel.
