In Vienna, they belong to the very fabric of the city. If ancient Rome had its &#8220;Bread and Circuses&#8221; to placate the population, then modern Vienna has &#8220;Cake and Cake.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, as you can imagine, the Konditorei occupies a special place in the hearts of the Viennese.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The presence of seating and table service can, however, make it difficult to distinguish the Konditorei from a normal coffee house.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After all, a Konditorei may also follow <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/eatingdrinking\/coffee-house-experience\/\">coffee house traditions<\/a>, sit in equally historical settings, and feature breakfast, snacks and other meals on the menu. One or more of the following clues should help:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>It calls itself a Konditorei (that&#8217;s a pretty big hint, frankly) or Zuckerb\u00e4cker (literally: sugar baker)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The first thing you see on entering is usually a display counter full of cakes, pastries and similar, but often boxes of chocolates, too. The variety and creativity on show can be quite breathtaking (and fattening)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>You can buy items at the counter for later consumption. Incidentally, a Konditorei makes a grand place to pick up little <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/shopping\/souvenirs\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"2090\">gifts<\/a> to take back home with you, often with stylish packaging unique to the location<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The ambience may be a little noisier than in a coffee house, with fewer tables occupied by just one individual. You come here for cake and company<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The decor might be somewhat less austere, the ceilings lower, the tables a touch closer together<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>It may be part of a chain; the classic coffee houses tend to be standalone locations, while a Konditorei business may have several branches<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"which-konditorei-should-you-try\">Which Konditorei should you try?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Given the importance of the Konditorei, Vienna possesses rather a lot of them. Some of the more well-known and traditional choices include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"demel\">Demel<\/h4>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Demelwindow1.jpg\" alt=\"Window at Demel\" class=\"wp-image-43264\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Demelwindow1.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/Demelwindow1-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">(The Demel display window)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Possibly the most famous Konditorei in the city and close enough to the central Hofburg palace that the cake would still be warm from the oven if you ordered one for the Emperor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Which actually happened a lot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Demel was an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/culture\/k-k\/\">official supplier<\/a> to the court, and they still sell the candied violets that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/culture\/sisi\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"34621\">Empress Elisabeth<\/a> so loved.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Established in 1786 (!), Demel moved into the current premises in the late 19th-century. The white and gold panelling inside echoes the interior of the Sch\u00f6nbrunn and Belvedere palaces. It also has a remarkable interior. L. Heiner also blessed the city and world with the gift of a new cake. The <em>Kardinalschnitte<\/em> appeared in 1933 and still features on menus across the city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The L. Heiner location on the Wollzeile has been open for over 170 years. But it has established a reputation for quality and creativity, and the stylish locations seem a tick more modern in their approach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Also, the staff always seem good-humoured and friendly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/eatingdrinking\/cafespubsbars\/oberlaa-neuer-markt\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"53975\">Neuer Markt Oberlaa<\/a> on a recently-refurbished historical square in the very centre of Vienna has a particularly nice conservatory-like section, not to mention (again) really lovely staff.
