The tram skirts the edge of the old town, so you can catch it from various tourist hotspots along the western and southern side of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/ring\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"1546\">Ring boulevard<\/a>, for example<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>After your embassy visit, jump on the 71 again for a little musical adventure: the tram takes you on out to St. Marx (close to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/footsteps\/mozarts-grave\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"1117\">Mozart&#8217;s grave<\/a>) and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/zentralfriedhof\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"301\">Zentralfriedhof<\/a> (home to the graves of such giants of music as Beethoven, Schubert, Brahms, Strauss, and Schoenberg)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Option 2: take the 4A bus to Am Modenapark (4 minute walk) or Lisztstra\u00dfe (5 minute walk)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>You can catch both the bus and tram from near Karlsplatz, a relatively central station and a stop on the U1, U2 and U4 subway lines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Nearby sights<\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/fountainredarmy.jpg\" alt=\"Fountain and red army monument\" class=\"wp-image-43648\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/fountainredarmy.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/fountainredarmy-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">(The nearby Hochstrahlbrunnen fountain and Red Army monument)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The British embassy forms part of the traditional diplomatic quarter. The Chinese, Russians and Iranians were near neighbours last time I checked, which I&#8217;m sure makes for some interesting encounters in the local coffee house.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To the west is Schwarzenberg square, with its giant <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/red-army-memorial\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"30069\">memorial<\/a> to the Red Army that &#8220;liberated&#8221; (or &#8220;conquered&#8221;, depending on your view of history) Vienna at the end of WWII and the large <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/hochstrahlbrunnen-fountain\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"30035\">fountain<\/a> that commemorated the 1873 opening of a water pipeline from the Alps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You reach that down Rennweg, which means you also pass the Croatian embassy at No.3 (a rather fine looking building designed by the famous architect, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/footsteps\/otto-wagner-in-vienna\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"4917\">Otto Wagner<\/a>). <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/footsteps\/gustav-mahler\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"25456\">Gustav Mahler<\/a> used to live on the same corner: see the plaque at Auenbruggergasse 2.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A little to the southwest is the famous <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sightseeing\/vienna-museums\/belvedere\/\">Belvedere complex<\/a> with its two baroque palaces and landscaped gardens, built by Prince Eugen von Savoyen in the early 18th century.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Belvedere is now home to a major art institution featuring many notable works. Their Gustav Klimt collection includes, for example, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/museums\/belvedere-sites\/kiss\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"1119\">The Kiss<\/a> (one of the world&#8217;s most famous paintings). Look out, particularly, for any special exhibitions on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A wonderful <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/christmasmarkets\/belvedere\/\">Christmas market<\/a> sets up at Belvedere, too, in late November and December.
