Although built in the early 19th century, it draws heavily on a style you associate with ancient Greece or Rome.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The same might be said about the White House in Washington DC, built in the late 18th century.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"why-is-it-important\">Why is it important?<\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/kunsthistorischesmuseum.jpg\" alt=\"The Kunsthistorisches Museum\" class=\"wp-image-46392\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/kunsthistorischesmuseum.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/kunsthistorischesmuseum-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">(The Renaissance-style Kunsthistorisches Museum on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/maria-theresien-platz\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"47208\">Maria-Theresien-Platz<\/a>, completed in 1891)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Vienna has its fair share of truly old buildings. For example, parts of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/stefansdom\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"294\">Stephansdom cathedral<\/a> date back to the 1200s. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/ruprechtskirche-church\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"27738\">Ruprechtskirche<\/a> church is even older.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thanks to the practice of historicism, though, some of the city&#8217;s apparently old buildings aren&#8217;t quite as old as they might seem to the casual observer .<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In Vienna, the peak of historicism&#8217;s popularity coincided with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/culture\/history-of-the-ringstrassen\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"68027\">period of massive reconstruction<\/a> that took place in the second half of the 19th century.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The city demolished its outer fortifications and opened the land and its environs up for development either side of a huge new boulevard (today&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/ring\/\">Ring<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many of the famous municipal buildings alongside this Ring, as well as various residential properties built by aristocrats and industrialists, mimic much older architectural approaches.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"373\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/khm_construction.jpg\" alt=\"Construction work on the KHM in the early 1880s\" class=\"wp-image-37179\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/khm_construction.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/khm_construction-300x224.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">(Construction of the Kunsthistorisches and Naturhistorisches museums in 1881; image by the Michael Frankenstein &amp; Comp. photo studio; Wien Museum Inv.-Nr. 78079\/1212\/2; excerpt reproduced with permission under the terms of the CC0 licence)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So historicism influenced the cityscape significantly in these areas of urban development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Perhaps more importantly, though, historicism eventually provoked an inevitable countermovement among more progressive architects and others of that ilk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This reaction contributed to the remarkable period of artistic, cultural, and intellectual creativity we know as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/culture\/wiener-moderne\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"28303\">Vienna modernism<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"where-to-learn-more\">Where to learn more<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Historicism is best experienced on site. Just about every prominent building you find along the Ring, for example, went up after 1850 but looks considerably older. Some of the more famous examples are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"the-votivkirche\">The Votivkirche<\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/votivkircheportal.jpg\" alt=\"Portal into the Votivkirche\" class=\"wp-image-45345\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/votivkircheportal.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/votivkircheportal-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">(The west portal)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Visitors often assume the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/votivkirche\/\">Votivkirche<\/a> is a well-preserved medieval cathedral, thanks to the characteristic gothic look you associate with places such as Canterbury cathedral. The design mirrors <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/culture\/baroque\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"30588\">baroque<\/a> or renaissance architecture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"rathaus\">Rathaus<\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/rathaustoday.jpg\" alt=\"The Rathaus\" class=\"wp-image-45794\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/rathaustoday.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/rathaustoday-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">(The square in front is a common event venue)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/rathaus-2\/\">city hall building<\/a> looms over the square that hosts such wonders as the city&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/christmasmarkets\/rathausplatz\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"222\">biggest Christmas market<\/a>. The impression is of a gothic giant, all stone towers, pointed arches and geometric patterns above the windows. It went up in 1883.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"parlament\">Parlament<\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/parliament2024.jpg\" alt=\"Full view of the Austrian parliament building at dusk\" class=\"wp-image-71184\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/parliament2024.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/parliament2024-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">(The parliament building reopened in 2023 after a long period of renovation)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The official (and working) <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/parlament\/\">parliament building<\/a> draws a clear line to the origins of democracy in its architecture.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This 1880s building has an obvious Hellenic style with its simple columns and abundance of Greek statues; Athena even dominates the fountain outside the front.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Take the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/parliament-tour\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"55963\">parliament tour<\/a> to see how historicism looks inside. Everything is in pristine condition thanks to a complete refurbishment in the early 2020s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"and-beyond-architecture\">And beyond architecture?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Additionally, you can witness the gradual fall of historicism (or at least traditional approaches) and the rise of modernist approaches in art, for example, when you view museums and galleries with works by the likes of Gustav Klimt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Try, for example, the permanent collections at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/museums\/belvedere-sites\/upper-belvedere-palace\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"3521\">Upper Belvedere<\/a> or in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/museums\/leopold-museum\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"4014\">Leopold Museum<\/a>. And look out for suitable <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/entertainment\/events\/exhibitions\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"37363\">special art exhibitions<\/a> throughout the year.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When is an ancient-looking building not so old?
