After all, this is a working cemetery even if also a notable visitor attraction with its own shop and a branch of the lovely <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/eatingdrinking\/cafespubsbars\/konditorei-oberlaa\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"22922\">Oberlaa Caf\u00e9-Konditorei chain<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The cemetery publishes its own guides, but I&#8217;ve pulled together some of the more recognisable names for you with directions added at the end. So if you wish to pay your respects to Beethoven, for example, read on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Most (but not all) of the famous graves reside in special clusters of so-called Ehrengr\u00e4ber (honorary graves). The award of an Ehrengrab in the Zentralfriedhof is a particular honour bestowed by the city, and the cemetery has dozens.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What famous people are buried here?<\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/brahmsgrave.jpg\" alt=\"Brahms grave\" class=\"wp-image-45884\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/brahmsgrave.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/brahmsgrave-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">(The grave of Johannes Brahms with a gravestone designed by Ilsa Conrat)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All the post-WWII Austrian presidents have their last resting place in the Zentralfriedhof. As do numerous composers, artists, industrialists, and others who made significant contributions to Austria and\/or Vienna.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many names might not mean much outside the country or city. But plenty have indeed left an indelible impression on world history. For example&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Composers and musicians<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Some of the greatest names in classical music form a self-contained collection of well-kept graves, with most located in Group 32A not far from the main entrance at Tor 2.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One or two passed away well before the city opened the Zentralfriedhof in 1874; the authorities moved the bodies there to create the Ehrengr\u00e4ber.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>They hoped the &#8220;star attractions&#8221; might encourage people to visit and use the cemetery, which struggled for acceptance early on given its distance from the city center.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Ludwig Van Beethoven<\/h4>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/beethovensgrave1.jpg\" alt=\"Beethoven's grave\" class=\"wp-image-46659\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/beethovensgrave1.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/beethovensgrave1-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">(The gravestone is actually a copy of the original)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The great composer and perhaps the most famous of all the cemetery residents died in 1827. His burial in the Zentralfriedhof was actually his third. For an explanation, see this dedicated article on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/footsteps\/beethovens-grave\/\">Beethoven&#8217;s last resting place<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2192 Found at: Group 32A, Grave 29<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Johannes Brahms<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Another composer born abroad who found fame in Vienna. Brahms died in 1897, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/footsteps\/brahms-grave\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"32076\">his grave<\/a> adjoins that of Johann Strauss the son.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2192 Found at: Group 32A, Grave 26<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Strauss family and Lanner<\/h4>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/straussgrave.jpg\" alt=\"Grave of Johann Strauss II\" class=\"wp-image-46658\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/straussgrave.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/straussgrave-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">(One of several members of the Strauss family in the Zentralfriedhof)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The most influential of the Strauss family died in 1899: Johann Strauss the son <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/footsteps\/johann-strauss-grave\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"5683\">is buried<\/a> along with his last wife, Adele.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2192 Found at: Group 32A, Grave 27<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The same group of graves has other members of the musical family, including Strauss&#8217;s brothers, Eduard (Grave 42) and Josef (Grave 44).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You also find Strauss&#8217;s father buried here (Grave 15), next to his friend and musical rival, Joseph Lanner (Grave 16), but he suffers the slight ignominy of the inscription <em>Johann Strauss Vater<\/em> (father), while his son&#8217;s grave is simply marked as Johann Strauss.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart<\/h4>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/mozartmemorial.jpg\" alt=\"The Mozart Memorial at the Zentralfriedhof\" class=\"wp-image-45207\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/mozartmemorial.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/mozartmemorial-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">(Not actually Mozart&#8217;s grave, even if it looks like it)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I include Mozart for completeness, but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/footsteps\/the-mozart-memorial\/\">the memorial<\/a> close to Beethoven in the Zentralfriedhof is exactly that: just a memorial. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/footsteps\/mozarts-grave\/\">real grave<\/a> is in St. Marx cemetery.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2192 Found at: Group 32A Grave 55<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Antonio Salieri<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Mozart&#8217;s rival in the film <em>Amadeus<\/em> (though the movie&#8217;s not historically accurate) died in 1825 and resides some way from most of the prominent composer graves. Walk along the outer cemetery wall going north from the Tor 3 entrance to find him.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2192 Found at: Group 0 Grave 54<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Franz Schubert<\/h4>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" data-id=\"4226\">Schubert&#8217;s grave<\/a> lies next to Beethoven&#8217;s, as it did when they were both originally laid to rest in the W\u00e4hringer Ortsfriedhof cemetery (now a Notable because his grave appeared on the cover of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/songsfilms\/vienna-by-ultravox\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"34931\">Ultravox&#8217;s Vienna single<\/a> and featured in the official video.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2192 Found at: Group 32B, possibly Grave 6?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to find the honorary graves<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>First off, familiarize yourself with the cemetery&#8217;s broad layout using the &#8220;\u00dcbersichtsplan <a href=\"https:\/\/www.friedhoefewien.at\/wiener-zentralfriedhof#tabs-0-2--bersichtspl-ne\">downloadable here<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You should enter through the main entrance (called &#8220;Tor 2&#8221; &#8211; bottom center of the map).
