No doubt the graveyard of the nearby medieval church (see below) would have encroached on the area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A map of the city from as far back as 1547 clearly shows today&#8217;s Josefsplatz marked in green and labeled as containing a maze. Note the absence of the central monument, which arrived a few years later; Wien Museum Inv.-Nr. 18971; excerpt reproduced with permission under the terms of the CC0 licence)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Let us take a tour of the main features and buildings&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"the-monument\">The Monument<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The emperor at the time when Josefsplatz reached its final form was Joseph II, which explains the name (albeit with idiosyncratic spelling).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Joseph himself dominates the centre of the square with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/winter-palace\/monument-emperor-joseph-ii\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"52459\">monument in his honour<\/a>, completed in 1807 just a few years after his 1790 death.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/statuejosephII.jpg\" alt=\"Statue of Joseph II\" class=\"wp-image-48427\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/statuejosephII.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/statuejosephII-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">(The reliefs on the surrounding columns document milestones and achievements in Joseph&#8217;s life and reign)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If the design seems familiar, that might be because it mirrors the famous equestrian statue of Marcus Aurelius in Rome.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The emperor stretches out the same right arm as his Roman predecessor, and the horse even has the same leg raised as in the original.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>History regards Joseph II relatively well, seeing him as one of the more enlightened monarchs in the European timeline. At least for a certain definition of &#8220;enlightened.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, Joseph&#8217;s tolerance of religions outside of Catholicism led to the Pope dropping by to try and persuade him otherwise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"augustinerkirche\">Augustinerkirche<\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/augustinianchurch.jpg\" alt=\"Entrance to the Augustinian Church\" class=\"wp-image-45993\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/augustinianchurch.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/augustinianchurch-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">(Look for the remarkable Canova memorial to Archduchess Marie Christine inside)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Three sides of the Josefsplatz share a common fa\u00e7ade, but the buildings within have quite different functions and backgrounds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We begin with the innocent looking entrance on the left as you face the square from the road.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That door takes you through into the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/augustinerkirche\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"17061\">Augustinerkirche<\/a> church, which dates back to the early 14th century and enjoys various claims to historical fame.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Joseph II&#8217;s mother (Empress Maria Theresa) married inside, for example. As did Emperor Franz Joseph, Marie Antoinette, and Napoleon (albeit in absentia). Trust me on this)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The central element of the Josefsplatz fa\u00e7ade hides the former court library (now the National Library) and provides access to one of Vienna&#8217;s greatest treasures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This part of today&#8217;s Hofburg complex dates back to the 1720s. Go through the Josefsplatz entrance to reach the 80m-long <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/winter-palace\/prunksaal\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"2750\">State Hall or Prunksaal<\/a>, an opulent library room that just about out-baroques anywhere else in a city of baroque masterpieces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Imagine the kind of frescoed ceiling, tall bookcases, gilt-topped columns, ancient globes, statues, and leather-bound tomes Disney might try to create. Then turn up the dial of awesomeness another couple of notches.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a bonus, the Prunksaal usually has a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/winter-palace\/prunksaal\/#tickets-visitor-tips\">special exhibition<\/a> going on inside, too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"hofburg\">Hofburg<\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/redoubtensaal.jpg\" alt=\"The Redoutens\u00e4le\" class=\"wp-image-42362\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/redoubtensaal.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/redoubtensaal-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">(A wing of the former Hofburg imperial complex)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The final part of that continuous fa\u00e7ade, opposite the Augustinerkirche, forms part of the Hofburg proper and houses the Redoutens\u00e4le. These two halls are not normally accessible to the public outside of events.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over their roughly 400 year history (with occasional redevelopment due to fire damage), the Redoutens\u00e4le have hosted plays, operas, masked balls, concerts (by the likes of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/footsteps\/brahms-in-vienna\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"31950\">Brahms<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/footsteps\/liszt-in-vienna\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"32394\">Liszt<\/a>), banquets, and exhibitions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1979, the USA&#8217;s Jimmy Carter and the Soviet Union&#8217;s Leonid Brezhnev signed the Salt II international arms treaty in the larger hall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Incidentally, in 1760, our old friend Joseph II had his wedding banquet in the smaller hall.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"the-stallburg\">The Stallburg<\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/stallburgjosefsplatz.jpg\" alt=\"Stallburg viewed from Josefsplatz square\" class=\"wp-image-48429\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/stallburgjosefsplatz.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/stallburgjosefsplatz-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">(A Renaissance corner to the square)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Not really part of Josefsplatz, but on the other side of the road from the Redoutens\u00e4le you can spot the corner of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/stallburg\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"30886\">Stallburg<\/a>, a renaissance building resonant with history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Lipizzaner stallions of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/spanishridingschool\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"278\">Spanish Riding School<\/a> live inside and court horses have done so since the 1560s (!), which adds up to an awful lot of horse manure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I recommend taking the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/tour-spanish-riding-school\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"41340\">stable and arena tour<\/a> to view the interior and get up close to the magnificent white stallions.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/spanishridinglipizzan.jpg\" alt=\"Head of a Lipizzaner stallion in his stable\" class=\"wp-image-60367\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/spanishridinglipizzan.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/spanishridinglipizzan-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">(Take a tour of the stables to see the lovely horses: photo taken courtesy of the SRS while on a press tour)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Stallburg buildings often served additional purposes, though.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, in the 17th and 18th century, the floor above the stables held the imperial collection of paintings (now largely in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/museums\/khm\/paintings\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"1487\">Kunsthistorisches Museum picture gallery<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The other end of the Stallburg <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/songsfilms\/third-man-locations\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"31222\">appeared<\/a> in the film, <em>The Third Man<\/em>. A scene in the popular <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/songsfilms\/vienna-blood-locations\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"22811\">Vienna Blood TV drama<\/a> also plays out on the rooftop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The state rooms within retain their historical splendour and serve, like so many such locations, as a prestigious event venue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Apart from the movie connection, the Palais enjoys additional enduring fame thanks to the entranceway. Unfortunately, WWII left its mark on the Renaissance building, although they did reconstruct the fa\u00e7ade in all its glory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"how-to-get-to-josefsplatz\">How to get to Josefsplatz<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If you&#8217;re exploring the historical highlights of old Vienna on foot, you&#8217;ll probably <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/transport\/walking-tour\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"50322\">walk past anyway<\/a>.
