An etching from around 1506 \u2013 1522; image courtesy of the Rijksmuseum)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Periods of transition seem to give rise to creativity. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/culture\/wiener-moderne\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"28303\">Vienna Modernism<\/a>, for example, flourished in a city of contrasts clawing its way into an industrialised world, and the movement gave birth to some of the greats of Austrian art history: Klimt, Schiele and associates.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But Austrian art obviously didn&#8217;t begin around 1900 and another time of change a few centuries earlier also yielded a rich artistic harvest. The late 1400s and early 1500s saw the Italian Renaissance send increasingly influential tendrils into the Gothic soils of neighbouring countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Belvedere&#8217;s <em>The Age of D\u00fcrer<\/em> exhibition shines a rare light on this period and showcases, for example, the output of Austrian workshops of the time, when art started to expand beyond its traditional role as a vehicle for religious teaching and moral instruction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Art began to become a goal in itself, with growing attention to its aesthetic quality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This development encouraged new approaches and greater sophistication. It increased the range of subjects (literal and figurative) worthy of attention, and artists themselves took on a more &#8220;artistic&#8221; understanding of their work and purpose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The era produced its fair share of recognisable masters. Albrecht D\u00fcrer, who gives his name to the exhibition title, stands tall among them; his portrait of a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/museums\/durer-hare\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"7083\">young hare<\/a> graces a million fridge magnets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Though not from what we call Austria today, D\u00fcrer did enjoy the patronage of the Habsburg emperor, Maximilian I.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other masters of their trade with a connection to the lands of today&#8217;s Austria or Habsburg rulers include the likes of Lucas Cranach the Elder, Albrecht Altdorfer and Jacopo de&#8217;Barbari.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Works by all the names mentioned above appear in the exhibition, alongside art by lesser-known &#8220;Austrian&#8221; practitioners who nevertheless deserve recognition for the quality of their output.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The exhibition draws on Belvedere&#8217;s own extensive collection of medieval and Renaissance art, supplemented by loans from other prestigious institutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"dates-and-tickets\">Dates, tickets &amp; tips<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Enjoy exploring <em>The Age of D\u00fcrer<\/em> from October 21st, 2021 to January 30th, 2022. A standard entrance ticket for Upper Belvedere gets you into the palace and any other exhibitions inside.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"how-to-get-to-the-exhibition\">How to get to the exhibition<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><em>The Age of D\u00fcrer<\/em> takes place in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/museums\/belvedere-sites\/upper-belvedere-palace\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"3521\">Upper Belvedere palace<\/a>.
