But the Stallburg seems always to have enjoyed a multipurpose role.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Habsburg family members or honoured guests sometimes found refuge in upper level apartments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A diary entry in the <em>Wiener Zeitung<\/em> newspaper of March 4th, 1722 noted that the Count von Collowart had arrived from Prague and taken lodgings in the Stallburg.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Most remarkably, the Stallburg long housed part of the imperial art collections. It all began with Archduke Leopold Wilhelm (1614-1662), who accumulated an extraordinary selection of paintings while governor of the Netherlands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div align=\"center\"><em>Ad:<\/em><br><\/div><div data-tiqets-widget=\"discovery\" data-cards-layout=\"horizontal\" data-slug-ids=\"pro976141,pro974585\" data-partner=\"visitingvienna\" data-tq-campaign=\"DA_SRSTour\"><\/div><script defer src=\"https:\/\/widgets.tiqets.com\/loader.js\"><\/script>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The Stallburg provided appropriate storage space and soon became a formal gallery for the display of these works plus, within a few decades, the collections of other Habsburg rulers. It retained this function until the late 18th century.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many of the works that used to live above the horses now hang in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/museums\/khm\/paintings\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"1487\">picture galleries<\/a> of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/museums\/khm\/overview\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"1446\">Kunsthistorisches Museum<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today&#8217;s Stallburg still fulfills its original purpose, with the Lipizzaners occupying the lower tract. Photo used with the kind permission of the SRS)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Stallburg isn&#8217;t open to the public per se, but is accessible through a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiqets.com\/en\/spanish-riding-school-tickets-l145873\/?partner=visitingvienna&amp;tq_campaign=LG_Stallburg\" rel=\"sponsored\">guided tour<\/a>*: both the Spanish Riding School&#8217;s frequent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/tour-spanish-riding-school\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"41340\">Guided Tour<\/a> and their rarer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/architectural-tour-spanish-riding-school\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"67016\">Architectural Tour<\/a> take you into the courtyard, around the insides of the stables, and up close to the horses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One side of that same courtyard faces an old vaulted public passageway (see photo below) that runs between the stables and the road outside. So you can, at least, see into the courtyard from the walkway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With a bit of luck, a stallion or two might poke their heads out of the doors or even find themselves in transfer across the road to the riding hall. But follow the travel tips for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/michaelerplatz-2\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"27254\">Michaelerplatz<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/josefsplatz\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"30648\">Josefsplatz<\/a> and then just walk a few yards down the connecting street (Reitschulgasse) between those two squares to reach the stables.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Both squares have historical buildings to rival the Stallburg.
