Bike-friendly mobility policies and continuous expansion of the cycle route network has done much to encourage this enthusiasm for two wheels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"cycle-paths\">Cycle paths<\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/donaukanalcyclingpathsign.jpg\" alt=\"Donaukanal cycling path sign\" class=\"wp-image-44774\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/donaukanalcyclingpathsign.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/donaukanalcyclingpathsign-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">(Radweg means cycle route)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As of early 2026, the city&#8217;s cycling network covered some 1,811km of routes with around 70,000 public bicycle parking spaces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Not all of those routes are dedicated cycle paths, of course. Most of that is flat and traffic free.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The Ringstrassen: cycle and pedestrian routes (often one and the same) flank the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/ring\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"1546\">giant boulevard<\/a> that encircles the old town and takes you past many of Vienna&#8217;s top landmarks. So popular that coming years should see the route redesigned to better separate the different traffic flows<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Along the Donaukanal: the arm of the Danube that breaks off to flow close to the city centre. A dedicated <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/entertainment\/donaukanal-walking-cycling-river-trips\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"34304\">bike route<\/a> runs along the southern bank.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div align=\"center\"><em>Ad:<\/em><br><\/div><div data-tiqets-widget=\"discovery\" data-cards-layout=\"horizontal\" data-content-type=\"venue\" data-content-ids=\"205277,205287\" data-partner=\"visitingvienna\" data-tq-campaign=\"DA_Bikes\"><\/div><script defer src=\"https:\/\/widgets.tiqets.com\/loader.js\"><\/script>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>On their last visit, my cycling enthusiast friends rented bikes to go out to the outlying hills from the centre and visit the vineyards and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/eatingdrinking\/cafespubsbars\/heuriger\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"30836\">Heuriger<\/a> not so easily accessed by the tram and subway network.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"bike-hire\">Bike hire<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>On the subject of rental, Vienna has various organisations happy to loan you a bike for a small fee, and Google can help you find one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But you&#8217;ll likely soon stumble across the WienMobil Rad bike sharing system, offered by the Wiener Linien public transport authority.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/wienmobilrad.jpg\" alt=\"WienMobil Rad station\" class=\"wp-image-48870\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/wienmobilrad.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/wienmobilrad-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">(The WienMobil Rad bike rental station outside the state opera house)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>WienMobil Rad has over 3000 seven-gear smartbikes, a number of e-bikes, and over 200 rental stations throughout the city (including many in areas popular with tourists).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Last time I checked, for example, bike station locations included:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Outside the Ring\/Volkstheater stop on the Ring boulevard (close to the Kunsthistorisches and Naturhistorisches museums)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>On Hoher Markt right in the centre of town<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>On Singerstra\u00dfe near to Stephansdom cathedral<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Outside the state opera house<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>At the two U4 subway stations (Hietzing and Sch\u00f6nbrunn) serving Sch\u00f6nbrunn palace<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>On Schwarzenbergplatz square just below Belvedere<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Along the Donaukanal, for example close to Schwedenplatz and Schottenring subway stations<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/wienmobilrad2.jpg\" alt=\"Row of parked bicycles with trees behind\" class=\"wp-image-70709\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/wienmobilrad2.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/wienmobilrad2-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">(The rental station next to Sch\u00f6nbrunn palace)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An initial registration is required via the nextbike smartphone app or online, with various common payment options available.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You then rent from any station via the app and a QR code on the bicycle or through a telephone call. One registered account can rent up to four bikes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the time of writing (early March, 2026), standard bike rental costs \u20ac0.75 for 30 minutes, capped at \u20ac19 for a 24-hour period. The city and transport authorities provide information with the relevant regulations. Try:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wien.gv.at\/en\/transportation\/cycling-traffic-rules\">Stadt Wien<\/a> (the city government): the rules of the road that apply particularly to cyclists. For example, children under 12 must wear a helmet. In English<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.oebb.at\/en\/reiseplanung-services\/im-zug\/fahrradmitnahme.html\">\u00d6BB<\/a> (Austrian Federal Railways): All you need to know about taking bicycles on regional and long-distance trains. In English<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/helpcenter.wienerlinien.at\/s\/topic\/0TOQv0000000OlVOAU\/fahrrad-co?language=de\">Wiener Linien<\/a> (municipal transport authority): Ditto, but for the subway. You can&#8217;t take your bike on Vienna&#8217;s trams or buses, unfortunately.
