But it&#8217;s not when compared to the likes of London and usually slots into the EU at just above average, price-wise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For guidance, here are some rough\u00a0prices as of mid-February 2026 for food, drink, transport, and entertainment. Prices can vary considerably depending where you are)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Warning: these are rough &#8220;average&#8221; Viennese prices based on my experience. Expect to pay more in tourist or city centre areas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Coffee:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A single espresso (German: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/eatingdrinking\/food\/coffee-glossary\/\">kleiner Schwarzer<\/a>): \u20ac2.90<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A cappuccino: \u20ac4.60<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Prices are higher in the central <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/eatingdrinking\/cafespubsbars\/coffee-houses\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"7689\">traditional coffee houses<\/a>. A cappuccino, for example, can exceed your average yearly mortgage repayment (I&#8217;m joking, but over \u20ac6 is not unusual)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Tip: Look for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/eatingdrinking\/food\/breakfast-in-vienna\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"82605\">breakfast options<\/a> in coffee houses that include a hot beverage. These combos can work out really quite cheap compared to buying everything separately.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Beer and wine:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A beer (half litre) in a bar: \u20ac4.90 (again, expect to pay more in central and tourist locations; I recently paid \u20ac6.90 for one in a well-known caf\u00e9 in the centre)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A 500ml tin of beer in a supermarket: \u20ac1.19 to \u20ac1.59 (for the popular Austrian brands)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>You can get drinkable wine in a supermarket for under \u20ac5 a bottle and very decent wine for not much more than that<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Other drinks:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>1.5 ltr bottle of mineral water in a supermarket: \u20ac0.39 to \u20ac0.99 for standard local brands<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>330ml can of coke in a supermarket: \u20ac1.39<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Tip: the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/eatingdrinking\/water\/\">tap water<\/a> is rather good in Vienna, since most of the city&#8217;s water supplies come direct from the Alps. The city also has numerous drinking \/ refill stations dotted around the place.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Food:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>100g bar of popular brand chocolate in a supermarket: \u20ac1.99<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Typical main course of fried cutlet of pork (i.e. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/eatingdrinking\/food\/wiener-schnitzel\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"45\">Schnitzel<\/a>) with a side: around \u20ac14.90 but prices vary significantly according to the kind of establishment<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/eatingdrinking\/food\/sausages\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"1200\">Sausage<\/a> and bread at a snack booth: \u20ac5 to \u20ac6<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>A couple of further tips: <\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Food and drink is quite inexpensive in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/eatingdrinking\/supermarkets\/\">supermarkets<\/a>, especially the discounters like Hofer (the Austrian version of Aldi), Lidl or PENNY Markt<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Many tourist places sell marzipan balls (Mozartkugeln) and Mozart-themed marzipan chocolate as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/shopping\/souvenirs\/\">souvenirs<\/a>. You can get more or less the exact same thing much cheaper in the conventional supermarkets<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Schnitzel is a useful menu item for comparing prices between restaurants, since nearly every place offers them. Just be sure you&#8217;re comparing like with like, since veal schnitzel (the traditional original version) costs significantly more than turkey or pork schnitzel (the far more common version)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A lot of restaurants offer inexpensive fixed-menu options, particularly at lunchtimes<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<div \u20ac40<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Petrol\/gasoline: at the time of writing, petrol prices at the cheapest locations are around \u20ac1.39\/ltr for Super (standard lead-free), but expect significant fluctuations, of course<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Compare car hire prices <a rel=\"sponsored\" class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>24-hour travel card for Vienna: \u20ac9.70<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>7-day travel pass for Vienna: \u20ac25.20 (personalised) or \u20ac28.90 (valid for the bearer)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Return ticket to\/from the airport on a dedicated non-stop express train: \u20ac24.90<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Return trip to\/from the airport on a standard S-Bahn train: around \u20ac10.40<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/transport\/public\/\">city transport system<\/a> is fantastic: fast, frequent, clean and inexpensive&#8230;especially if you get one of the network passes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Tip: consider the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/transport\/vienna-welcome-card\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"77567\">Vienna Welcome Card<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/transport\/vienna-card\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"3848\">Vienna City Card<\/a>: both are tourist passes offering discounts and a built-in public transport network pass<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/transport\/sightseeing-bus\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"3789\">Sightseeing bus<\/a>:\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Basic 24-hour ticket: around in the most prestigious locations like the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/entertainment\/opera\/staatsoper\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"1071\">State Opera House<\/a>.
