They appear, for example, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/songsfilms\/vienna-blood-season-3\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"54655\">in Season 3<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/songsfilms\/vienna-blood-season-4\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"78652\">Season 4<\/a> of the Vienna Blood detective drama. And in the film <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/songsfilms\/woman-in-gold-locations\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"67389\">The Woman in Gold<\/a>, where the Belvedere galleries form part of the story of Maria Altmann&#8217;s efforts to reclaim a Klimt portrait stolen by the Nazis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sculpted hedges, graceful fountains, and cherubic statues fill the location. (also: Karl Ledermann);  Sammlung Wien Museum; excerpt reproduced with permission under the terms of the CC0 licence)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Most people focus on the terraced area between the two palaces, but be sure to go around <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/museums\/belvedere-sites\/upper-belvedere-palace\/\">Upper Belvedere<\/a> to find the small lake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The southernmost point of the lake is the place to take an excellent photo of that upper palace. Verlag; Wien Museum Inv.-Nr. 18994; excerpt reproduced with permission under the terms of the CC0 licence)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The gardens were the first part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sightseeing\/vienna-museums\/belvedere\/\">Belvedere complex<\/a> to start construction back in 1700, directly after Prince Eugene bought up the land.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The designer (Dominique Girard) studied under Andr\u00e9 Le N\u00f4tre, the landscape architect behind Versailles (aha!). You might know Le N\u00f4tre from the Alan Rickman film, <em>A Little Chaos<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It took a couple of decades to complete the gardens, largely because the builder responsible for the foundations of the main fountain left early to finish Mrs Schmidt&#8217;s kitchen tiling. The task took longer than he expected. (I might have made that story up.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Later, the prince even added a zoo. (That story&#8217;s true.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div align=\"center\"><em>Ad:<\/em><br><\/div><div data-tiqets-widget=\"discovery\" data-cards-layout=\"horizontal\" data-content-type=\"product\" data-content-ids=\"974613,1025105\" data-partner=\"visitingvienna\" data-tq-campaign=\"DA_Belvedere\"><\/div><script defer=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/widgets.tiqets.com\/loader.js\"><\/script>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Tickets &amp; visitor tips<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The gardens cost nothing to view and have been open to the public since 1780. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The gates usually unlock at 6.30 or 7 in the morning, with closing times depending on the season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you look back down the gardens from the rear of Upper Belvedere palace, for example from outside the visitors entrance or from a north-facing window inside, you also get a reasonable view across Vienna toward Stephansdom cathedral.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(For even better views of the city, try <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/where-to-get-the-best-views-of-the-city\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"4922\">these suggestions<\/a>.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you like gardens, the Belvedere complex actually adjoins two other bundles of plant-based joy: the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/museums\/belvedere-sites\/alpine-gardens\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"3421\">Alpine Gardens<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/museums\/belvedere-sites\/botanical-garden\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"3453\">Botanical Garden<\/a>.
