So Episode 2 here might be Episodes 3-4 in the USA, for example)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The series draws on Frank Tallis&#8217;s fantastic books and is a production of MR FILM and Endor Productions, coproduced with ORF, ZDF, and Red Arrow Studios.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"episode-1-the-melancholy-countess\">Episode 1 The Melancholy Countess<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Most of this episode features indoor scenes, which made it difficult to track down the locations (with a couple of notable exceptions).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You might think identifying the distinctive interior d\u00e9cor would be easy, but Vienna has hundreds of historical townhouses and other sites that serve as plausible candidates. Many of them remain inaccessible to the general public.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"the-imperial-hotel\">The Imperial Hotel<\/h4>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/hotelimperialnight.jpg\" alt=\"Hotel Imperial and Christmas lights\" class=\"wp-image-42673\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/hotelimperialnight.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/hotelimperialnight-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">(The hotel at Christmas)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A great deal of the action throughout this episode definitely takes place in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/accommodation\/fivestarhotels\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"18\">five-star Imperial Hotel<\/a> at K\u00e4rntner Ring 16.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This late 19th-century palatial town residence converted to a hotel in the 1880s, and Vienna Blood used a number of locations inside the building.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The opening scene of the dinner dance, for example, takes place in the hotel&#8217;s Marble Hall, notable for its columned arches. The countess then climbs the Imperial&#8217;s royal staircase with the portrait of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/culture\/franz-joseph\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"26307\">Emperor Franz Joseph<\/a> at the top.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/hotelimperialentrance.jpg\" alt=\"Entrance to Hotel Imperial\" class=\"wp-image-48767\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/hotelimperialentrance.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/hotelimperialentrance-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">(The hotel entrance on K\u00e4rntner Ring)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The rooms used by the countess appear repeatedly during the episode, and we&#8217;re pretty sure the bedroom at least is part of the Imperial&#8217;s Royal Suite (which is larger than our apartment).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We also catch a glimpse of the hotel&#8217;s entrance a couple of times, for example when Max and Oskar first visit the location.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All of which means this is one film set you can actually <a href=\"https:\/\/www.booking.com\/hotel\/at\/hotelimperialwien.en.html?aid=1164678&amp;no_rooms=1&amp;group_adults=1\" rel=\"sponsored\">stay in<\/a>*. Though the Royal Suite does not come cheap.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"dream-sequence\">Dream sequence<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>A country residence stands in at least for the outdoor shots of the abandoned institute that features in various sequences. Unfortunately, the location is outside Vienna at a (private?) estate near Neunkirchen in Lower Austria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"cafe-sperl\">Caf\u00e9 Sperl<\/h4>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"349\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/cafesperl.jpg\" alt=\"Caf\u00e9 Sperl sign and awning\" class=\"wp-image-46351\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/cafesperl.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/cafesperl-300x209.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">(A coffee house since 1880)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Max meets an old acquaintance in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/eatingdrinking\/cafespubsbars\/cafe-sperl\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"9714\">Caf\u00e9 Sperl<\/a>, which made an appearance in Episode 3 of the first season. Max and Oskar also have a drink here later in the episode as they work out the truth behind the case.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This late 19th-century coffee house has distinctive red and white patterned upholstery and still remains popular with the Viennese today. You get a lovely view of its wood and glass entrance in the episode, too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"burggarten\">Burggarten<\/h4>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/franzjosephstatue.jpg\" alt=\"Statue of Franz Joseph I\" class=\"wp-image-44020\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/franzjosephstatue.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/franzjosephstatue-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">(A 1903 statue of Emperor Franz Joseph is on the left)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Max and his father meet in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/winter-palace\/burggarten\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"2746\">Burggarten park<\/a>, which backs onto the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sightseeing\/hofburg\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"2708\">Hofburg complex<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/museums\/albertina\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"2995\">Albertina art museum<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can see the Jugendstil glasshouse at the back of some shots, and the pair sit and talk near the statue of Emperor Franz Joseph.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That statue certainly existed at the time of Vienna Blood, but it only moved to the Burggarten in the 1950s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"stadtpark\">Stadtpark &amp; In the episode, the signpost you see in the above photo becomes a lovely street lamp.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"episode-2-the-devil-s-kiss\">Episode 2 The Devil&#8217;s Kiss<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"hotel-imperial\">Hotel Imperial<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>I guess if you&#8217;re going to film in the Hotel Imperial, you might as well make the most of it. Both locations feature remarkable decoration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The office with the notable stained glass coloured windows is the Hungarian Coronation Hall of the Franzenburg in Laxenburg (see below). The painting behind Strasser&#8217;s desk shows the 1825 coronation of Empress Carolina Augusta as Queen of Hungary in Bratislava.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The larger building is the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/museums\/heeresgeschichtliches\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"13073\">Heeresgeschichtliches Museum<\/a> (Museum of Military History).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We see Oskar climbing the steps in the museum&#8217;s Hall of Generals with its statues of military figures of the past. Though a magnificent piece of architecture with some gorgeous rooms inside, it was actually completed at the very beginning of the 1800s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Having said that, some of the interior is genuinely Renaissance, for example, since they transferred architectural elements from other locations to create the complex.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now a museum, the Franzensburg is open to the public.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"street-scenes\">Street scenes<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>At least some of the opening scenes of Episode 2 are in the area of Schulhof square in the first district.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We catch a view of the rear of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/kirche-am-hof\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"29356\">Kirche am Hof<\/a>, for example. That&#8217;s actually Traungasse again, though at the Salesianergasse end of the street. However, they filmed at least some indoor scenes elsewhere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We&#8217;re pretty certain, for example, that the wonderful Baroque church interiors are the Franziskanerkirche. This church is part of the Franciscan monastery on Vienna&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/franziskanerplatz\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"64981\">Franziskanerplatz<\/a> in the old town.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The same area also appears as a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/songsfilms\/before-sunrise-locations\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"36997\">location<\/a> in the film, <em>Before Sunrise<\/em>. (Thanks to an eagle-eyed reader for that tip.) You can actually visit the location on their <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/michaelerkirche-crypt-tour\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"67513\">crypt tour<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"the-synagogue\">The Synagogue<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>The huge synagogue had us puzzled for a while, since it matched none of the existing synagogues in Austria. But we believe some film tricks are at play here.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This outdoor scene takes place on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/am-hof-square\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"27637\">Am Hof square<\/a>, also in the very centre of Vienna.
