This small summer palais still contains parts that date back to the early 18th-century.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The property once belonged to Emanuel Schikaneder, founder of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/entertainment\/opera\/theater-wien\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"18961\">Theater an der Wien<\/a> and librettist for Mozart&#8217;s <em>The Magic Flute<\/em>. Leh\u00e1r acquired the Schl\u00f6ssel in 1932.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Theobaldgasse<\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/theobaldgasse.jpg\" alt=\"Theobaldgasse 16\" class=\"wp-image-48042\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/theobaldgasse.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/theobaldgasse-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">(Located in the 6th district close to the centre)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The plaque at Theobaldgasse 16 sits inside the front door and mentions (I think) his support of those who fell into financial difficulty through no fault of their own.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Museum, Diglas &amp; Sperl<\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/cafemuseum.jpg\" alt=\"View of Caf\u00e9 Museum\" class=\"wp-image-44734\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/cafemuseum.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/cafemuseum-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">(Adolf Loos originally designed this coffee house)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Like most people of an artistic bent, Leh\u00e1r would have spent time in Vienna&#8217;s coffee houses. He was, for example, a regular at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/eatingdrinking\/cafespubsbars\/cafe-museum\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"7679\">Caf\u00e9 Museum<\/a> (on Operngasse), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/eatingdrinking\/cafespubsbars\/cafe-diglas\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"43560\">Caf\u00e9 Diglas<\/a> (on Wollzeile), and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/eatingdrinking\/cafespubsbars\/cafe-sperl\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"9714\">Caf\u00e9 Sperl<\/a> (on Gumpendorfer Stra\u00dfe), according to the websites of these coffee houses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Clearly a man with a penchant for coffee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"music\">Leh\u00e1r: his music<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The young composer arrived in Vienna more or less for good in 1899 as an army bandmaster, then left the military a couple of years later to pursue a career in music that would make him famous and wealthy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div align=\"center\"><em>Ad:<\/em><br><\/div><div data-tiqets-widget=\"discovery\" data-cards-layout=\"horizontal\" data-content-type=\"product\" data-content-ids=\"1008299,1029872\" data-partner=\"visitingvienna\" data-tq-campaign=\"DA_Concerts1\"><\/div><script defer=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/widgets.tiqets.com\/loader.js\"><\/script>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>In those first two or three years, Leh\u00e1r&#8217;s regimental Musikkapelle gave regular concerts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Newspaper advertisements talked up appearances by the &#8220;complete military band of the infantry regiment Grand Duke Michael of Russia No.26 under the baton of Franz Leh\u00e1r&#8221; (my translation).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Zum Wilden Mann<\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/zumwildenmann.jpg\" alt=\"Zum wilden Mann\" class=\"wp-image-48040\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/zumwildenmann.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/zumwildenmann-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">(Found at W\u00e4hringer Stra\u00dfe 85)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It seems the <em>Zum Wilder Mann<\/em> establishment regularly put on such events. The address has a same-named restaurant today; this continues a long gastronomic tradition, even if the building &#8220;only&#8221; dates back to the late-19th century.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Kursalon<\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/kursalon1901.jpg\" alt=\"Kursalon around 1900; Wien Museum Inv.-Nr. 53845\/6\" class=\"wp-image-39820\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/kursalon1901.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/kursalon1901-300x169.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">(Postcard of the Kursalon around about the time Leh\u00e1r performed there with the regimental band. (Producer); Wien Museum Inv.-Nr. 53845\/6, excerpt reproduced with permission under the terms of the CC0 licence)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another location for Leh\u00e1r&#8217;s military concerts was the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/entertainment\/kursalon\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"5514\">Kursalon<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, Leh\u00e1r conducted there on November 22nd, 1900, at a benefit concert for the bandmaster pension fund and in 1901 at an evening of entertainment organised by the Viennese Hungarian National Association.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Theater an der Wien<\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/theateranderWien2024.jpg\" alt=\"Front view of a theater\" class=\"wp-image-78173\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/theateranderWien2024.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/theateranderWien2024-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">(Famously hosted the 1805 premiere of Beethoven&#8217;s Fidelio)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The public saw many of Leh\u00e1r&#8217;s works for the very first time at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/entertainment\/opera\/theater-wien\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"18961\">Theater an der Wien<\/a>. The operetta <em>The Merry Widow<\/em>, for example, enjoyed its world premiere there on December 30th, 1905, with Leh\u00e1r conducting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The next day, the <em>Die Zeit<\/em> newspaper wrote (my translation):<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>The Merry Widow was first performed yesterday to rapturous applause. It demonstrates the merits in all their unadulterated purity that Leh\u00e1r can thank for his great successes to date.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>The opera house hosted world premieres of works by many other well-known composers, too, not least <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/footsteps\/beethoven\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"2056\">Beethoven<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/footsteps\/johann-strauss\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"21524\">Strauss<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Staatsoper<\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/staatsoperday.jpg\" alt=\"State Opera House by day\" class=\"wp-image-43278\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/staatsoperday.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/staatsoperday-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">(View from the Albertina)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Leh\u00e1r&#8217;s <em>Giudetta<\/em> premiered under Leh\u00e1r&#8217;s musical direction at the famous <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/entertainment\/opera\/staatsoper\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"1071\">State Opera House<\/a> on January 20th, 1934. Further performances followed until 1938 and again from 1951-1953.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That was the first time the Staatsoper had hosted one of the composer&#8217;s works, and it seems not everyone was pleased at his incursion onto the hallowed Staatsoper stage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <em>Illustrierte Kronen Zeitung<\/em> described the raucous ovations and noted (my translation):<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>It was a triumph for his popularity over the somewhat cowardly pedants who feared the desecration of the opera house through a Leh\u00e1r premiere.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<div align=\"center\"><em>Ad:<\/em><br><\/div><div data-tiqets-widget=\"discovery\" data-cards-layout=\"horizontal\" data-slug-ids=\"exp206741,exp238032\" data-partner=\"visitingvienna\" data-tq-campaign=\"DA_ConcTour\"><\/div><script defer src=\"https:\/\/widgets.tiqets.com\/loader.js\"><\/script>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Apollo Kino<\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/apollocinema.jpg\" alt=\"The Apollo Kino\" class=\"wp-image-48041\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/apollocinema.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/apollocinema-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">(Now a modern cinema)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You might be forgiven for blinking at a connection between IMAX screens and a composer of operettas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Apollo Kino at Gumpendorfer Stra\u00dfe 63 began showing movies in 1929, succeeding the Apollo Theatre at the same location where the likes of the Mata Hari once appeared. The first performance of Leh\u00e1r&#8217;s <em>Tangok\u00f6nigin<\/em> (The Tango Queen) took place there on September 9th, 1921.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many other sites of Leh\u00e1r premieres no longer exist, like the Carltheater, Johann Strau\u00df-Theater, or B\u00fcrgertheater.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"memorials\">Leh\u00e1r: memorials &amp; more<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Franz Leh\u00e1r memorial<\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/leharmonument.jpg\" alt=\"The Leh\u00e1r monument\" class=\"wp-image-48045\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/leharmonument.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/leharmonument-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">(Leh\u00e1r&#8217;s bust is just behind the Kursalon)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/stadtpark\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"3254\">Stadtpark<\/a> park contains several monuments and memorials to composers closely associated with Vienna. The Leh\u00e1r memorial features a stone bust designed by the Austrian sculptor Franz Anton Coufal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The unveiling took place on April 29th, 1980 in the presence of the then Austrian president, Rudolf Kirchschl\u00e4ger.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Leh\u00e1rgasse<\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/lehargasse.jpg\" alt=\"Leh\u00e1rgasse sign\" class=\"wp-image-48044\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/lehargasse.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/lehargasse-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">(Today&#8217;s road is university territory)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The city named a street in Leh\u00e1r&#8217;s honour in 1948, shortly after the composer&#8217;s death. Leh\u00e1rgasse&#8217;s artistic connections include more than its name. You have, for example (at the time of writing):<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The back end of the Theater an der Wien<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Offices of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.festwochen.at\/en\/home\">Wiener Festwochen<\/a> arts festival.
