This alone lets him stand out from his Habsburg colleagues, most of whom had precious little military talent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Having said that, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/winter-palace\/archduke-karl-monument\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"40941\">Albrecht&#8217;s father<\/a> famously beat Napoleon at the Battle of Aspern in 1809.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"315\" height=\"420\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/albrecht1866.jpg\" alt=\"Photo of Archduke Albrecht from 1866\" class=\"wp-image-69701\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/albrecht1866.jpg 315w, https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/albrecht1866-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 315px) 100vw, 315px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">(Albrecht sporting a fine bit of facial hair in an 1866 photo by the studio run by Adele Perlmutter; Wien Museum Inv.-Nr. 103431\/581; excerpt reproduced with permission under the terms of the CC0 licence)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This service and prowess on the field of battle earned the Archduke various memorials, including the 10m-high bronze equestrian monument that sits on the small square in front of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/museums\/albertina-staterooms\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"2997\">Albertina palais<\/a> that he once owned.  The location now serves as a prestigious art museum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Historians, however, suggest Albrecht&#8217;s conservatism and intolerance of progressive perspectives likely hindered the modernisation of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/culture\/austria-hungary\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"12858\">Austro-Hungarian<\/a> military as the 20th century approached.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That attitude did the empire no favours, given what happened soon after the 1900s began.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div align=\"center\"><em>Ad:<\/em><br><\/div><div data-tiqets-widget=\"discovery\" data-cards-layout=\"horizontal\" data-slug-ids=\"exp206741,exp238032\" data-partner=\"visitingvienna\" data-tq-campaign=\"DA_ConcTour\"><\/div><script defer src=\"https:\/\/widgets.tiqets.com\/loader.js\"><\/script>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Donations from within the military financed the initiative to build the Albertina monument, led by a committee formed around Archduke Friedrich (Albrecht&#8217;s nephew and the then occupant of the palais).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The sculptor Caspar Zumbusch designed the 7,000 kg statue, thus completing a quartet of famous monuments from the same hand (others are for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/footsteps\/beethoven-statue\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"7041\">Beethoven<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/radetzky-monument\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"39896\">Radetzky<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/footsteps\/maria-theresa-monument\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"6483\">Maria Theresa<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although Zumbusch drew on photographs for his work, he would have known the Archduke quite well by sight: Albrecht apparently visited the sculptor as he worked on the Radetzky monument.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to a newspaper report of the time, it took four months to produce the original designs and a year to create the actual model for the casting process.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"332\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/albrechtunveiling.jpg\" alt=\"Unveiling of the Albrecht monument; Wien Museum Inv.-Nr. 65861\/128\" class=\"wp-image-39992\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/albrechtunveiling.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/12\/albrechtunveiling-300x199.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">(The celebrations around the unveiling of the monument on May 21st, 1899, as photographed by Charles Scolik and produced by A. I translate the latter as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Field Marshall Archduke Albrecht of Austria 1817 &#8211; 1895<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In grateful remembrance of the victorious commander and fatherly leader<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>To the Commander-in-Chief His Majesty the King and Emperor Franz Joseph December 2nd 1898 Austria-Hungary&#8217;s Military<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The date of the dedication seems confusing given the actual unveiling took place on May 21st, 1899. December 2nd, 1898 would have honoured the 50th anniversary of Franz Joseph&#8217;s accession, but they seemingly postponed celebrations after the assassination of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/culture\/sisi\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"34621\">Empress Elisabeth<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The new date coincided with the 90th anniversary of the Aspern victory over Napoleon, and Franz Joseph himself unveiled the monument in front of almost the entire upper echelon of the military: a 72-gun salute followed.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/AlbertinaArtMuseum.jpg\" alt=\"The Albertina Art Museum from below\" class=\"wp-image-41600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/AlbertinaArtMuseum.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/AlbertinaArtMuseum-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">(The location gives Albrecht a good view across to the opera house)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Incidentally, movie buffs might recognise the Albrecht monument as a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/songsfilms\/before-sunrise-locations\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"36997\">location<\/a> in <em>Before Sunrise<\/em>: Jesse recites Auden&#8217;s poem to C\u00e9line on the monument&#8217;s steps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The very same steps also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/songsfilms\/sachertorte-movie-locations\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"58231\">appear<\/a> (possibly as a homage to <em>Before Sunrise<\/em>) in <em>Sachertorte<\/em>: another Vienna-based romantic movie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"how-to-get-to-albrecht\">How to get to Albrecht<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Find your way to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/museums\/albertina\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"2995\">Albertina museum<\/a> and Albrecht sits just outside on the raised platform above the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/albrechtsbrunnen-danubiusbrunnen\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"32741\">wall fountain<\/a> that also bears his name.
