They spent half a century putting together a huge collection of art, but also establishing Schiele as one of the world&#8217;s greats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This collection forms the basis of the Leopold Museum, located inside the central MuseumsQuartier (MQ) complex.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Schiele has pride of place in the museum archives, but he&#8217;s just one of many great artists featured within.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"inside-the-leopold-museum\">Inside the Leopold Museum<\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/leopoldwien1900.jpg\" alt=\"Exhibition Wien um 1900 \u00a9 Leopold Museum\" class=\"wp-image-42892\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/leopoldwien1900.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/leopoldwien1900-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">(View of the &#8220;Vienna 1900&#8221; exhibition \u00a9 Leopold Museum, Wien;  Photo: Lisa Rastl)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/museums\/schiele-leopold\/\">Vienna 1900 permanent exhibition<\/a> forms the centrepiece of the museum and occupies a couple of floors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This presents the birth, peak and afterlife of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/culture\/wiener-moderne\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"28303\">Vienna modernist movement<\/a>, beginning with its origins and the likes of Hans Makart and ending with post-WWI developments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Works by such names as Klimt, Kokoschka, Gerstl, Wagner, Hoffmann, Loos, Moser, Schoenberg, and others (and, of course, Schiele) occupy the bulk of the exhibition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The remaining floors host regular special exhibitions (see below) as well as a permanent exhibition entitled <em>From Expressionism to New Objectivity<\/em> that segues out of the <em>Vienna 1900<\/em> era.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"tickets-visitor-tips\">Tickets, exhibitions &amp; tips<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The museum sits in the southern half of the MQ, to the left as you come through the main entrance to the complex.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div align=\"center\"><p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">(Booking service provided by Tiqets.com*, who I am an affiliate of)<\/p><div data-tiqets-widget=\"availability\" data-product-id=\"974356\" data-partner=\"visitingvienna\" data-tq-campaign=\"AW_Leo\" data-layout=\"full\"><\/div><script defer=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/widgets.tiqets.com\/loader.js\"><\/script><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Special exhibitions<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The schedule of special exhibitions at the time of writing:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/museums\/gustave-courbet-exhibition\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"88851\">Gustave Courbet<\/a> (until June 21st, 2026): retrospective and the first solo exhibition in Austria for the 19th-century artist<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Next up:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>Premiere!<\/em> (April 24th to October 4th, 2026): highlights from the collection of the Austrian National Bank, which covers paintings and sculptures from 1918 to the present<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"shop-and-cafe-leopold\">Shop and Caf\u00e9 Leopold<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The museum store carries the kind of items you&#8217;d expect: calendars, postcards, prints, and other typical mementos and designer goods.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Klimt dominates the themed products: I&#8217;m guessing <em>The Kiss<\/em> makes a more acceptable napkin than one of Schiele&#8217;s naked self-portraits (depends on the meal and company, though).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/cafeleopold.wien\/\">Caf\u00e9 Leopold<\/a> is a mix of traditional coffee house, modern bar, and Asian restaurant. You can drop in without going into the museum, and they have a lovely outdoor section in the main MQ courtyard for part of the year, too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Of course, the wider MuseumsQuartier is full of caf\u00e9s and similar should you wish more choice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some further tips:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The museum galleries are large, bright, and airy, with the works of art quite spread out. So it all feels very open and you&#8217;re not overwhelmed (which is helpful if you&#8217;re uncomfortable with darker themes and nudity: both of which can feature heavily with the likes of Schiele)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>All information displays in the Leopold Museum are bilingual (English and German)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Go up to the seasonal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/mq-libelle\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"26801\">rooftop MQ Libelle viewing platform<\/a> using the lift on the outside of the building for views across the Museumsquartier and the old city as well as a small caf\u00e9<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A Vienna Pass (read an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/vienna-pass-review\/\">in-depth review<\/a>) gets you in once for free<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>If you enjoy the displays at the Leopold Museum, chances are you&#8217;ll like the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/museums\/mak\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"7100\">MAK<\/a> contemporary art and design museum, which also has a dedicated section covering turn-of-the-century Vienna<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"how-to-get-to-the-leopold-museum\">How to get to the Leopold Museum<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Subway: The closest subway station is Museumsquartier (on the U2 line). You can also wander through the MQ complex from the northern end if you get off at the Volkstheater station (on the U2 and U3 lines).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tram\/bus: The 49 tram and 48A bus also go to Volkstheater. The Leopold Museum is not far from the ring tram lines, either.
