And a certain Adolf Hitler was famously denied a place&#8230;twice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The institution&#8217;s current home on Schillerplatz went up in the 1870s to designs by Theophil Hansen, the architect behind Austria&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/parlament\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"262\">parliament building<\/a>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/entertainment\/alte-borse\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"69243\">Alte B\u00f6rse<\/a>, and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/entertainment\/musikverein\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"5593\">Musikverein<\/a>. You might recognise it from a significant role in the movie <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/songsfilms\/woman-in-gold-locations\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"67389\">The Woman in Gold<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The building looks rather pristine, despite its venerable age. Or Gustav Klimt. Bosch and Bruegel. Van Dyck and von Alt. Hundertwasser and Schiele. Rembrandt and Rubens. Titian and Boticelli.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fortunately for us, the academy&#8217;s galleries offer a public home to highlights from the collection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What you see depends on when you go, and your visit may even fall into a gap when the Gem\u00e4ldegalerie closes between special exhibitions. Last time I checked (early 2025), a standard adult ticket cost \u20ac12.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Special exhibitions<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The current schedule:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>Considering the Collection<\/em> (until August 30th, 2026): highlights from the in-house archives featuring the likes of Bosch and Rubens, along with contemporary tapestries by Ana Torfs<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Some extra tips:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The front entrance of the academy looks out over a park with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/the-schiller-monument\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"39850\">large monument<\/a> to the German literary giant Friedrich Schiller<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Once you enter the building, go on through and turn right down the corridor, then up two sets of stairs (or take the lift) to Floor 1 (where the exhibitions take place)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Enjoy the interior decoration as you go. For example, look through the glass doors opposite the entrance to see the Aula hall with its huge ceiling paintings by the German artist Anselm Feuerbach (the hall also features in <em>The Woman in Gold<\/em>)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If you&#8217;re most interested in paintings by Old Masters, then be sure to also visit the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/museums\/khm\/overview\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"1446\">Kunsthistorisches Museum<\/a>. When you leave the academy, simply turn left and walk to the end of Niebelungengasse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That route also takes you past <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/entertainment\/palais-eschenbach\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"70392\">Palais Eschenbach<\/a>, a lovely building from 1872 that also hosts classical concerts tailored to the needs of visitors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"how-to-get-to-the-collection\">How to get to the collection<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Subway: Karlsplatz station is very close (on the U1, U2 and U4 subway lines). Just be sure to take a west exit from the underground complex.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tram\/bus: The trams that skirt the edge of the old town stop nearby, too.
