Passing through the door, though, reveals a place of magic whose insides extend far further than you might imagine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sluka on K\u00e4rntner Stra\u00dfe evokes a similar feeling.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The main entrance looks like one of those nice little <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/eatingdrinking\/cafespubsbars\/konditorei\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"23020\">Konditorei<\/a> common in Vienna: a fine cake counter and a few seats to rest feet weary from tramping the tourist trails.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And so it was until an expansion into neighbouring premises. Go inside and continue through to the back: Sluka opens out into what might be best described as an Art Deco palais.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The d\u00e9cor looks like something from the early 1900s, though the caf\u00e9 opened just a few years ago. The Zwieback family later acquired the premises on Weihburggasse behind the store and put in their own coffee house in the early 1920s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(Fun fact: owner Ella Zirner-Zwieback was the prime mover behind the establishment of a short-lived women\u2019s football championship in the mid-1930s.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Caf\u00e9 Zwieback used designs by, for example, Friedrich Ohmann and August Kirstein. A prestigious architect of the time, Ohmann also worked on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/winter-palace\/elisabeth-memorial\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"16938\">Empress Elisabeth memorial<\/a> in the Volksgarten park. And he collaborated with Kirstein on several museum buildings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The coffee house became the &#8220;Zu den drei Husaren&#8221; restaurant a few years later, which served as one of Vienna&#8217;s more noble gastronomic locations for almost eight decades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As Sluka came to renovate the premises they uncovered much of the original Caf\u00e9 Zwieback interior. Fortunately for us, instead of tearing it all down, they worked with art historians and other experts to repair and renovate everything.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Check the columns facing the cake counter for photographs of the premises from the Zwieback era.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/slukachristmaslights.jpg\" alt=\"Christmas lights outside Sluka\" class=\"wp-image-54463\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/slukachristmaslights.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/slukachristmaslights-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">(Christmas display on the outer fa\u00e7ade)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fresh furnishings with upholstery that pays due tribute to the surroundings now combine with new-but-largely-old wall and ceiling d\u00e9cor to create something both stylish and unique.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One part, for example, features a half-arched ceiling with bronzed ribbing and what looks like a mix of stained glass and tiling across a series of curved surfaces. The wall is all gilt wooden columns and mirrors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another room glistens with gold mosaics and mirrors. The sort of place Klimt&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/museums\/belvedere-sites\/kiss\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"1119\">The Kiss<\/a> could hang in entirely unobtrusively.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And another has a complete change of style: a winter garden with plants and a running fountain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All of which is wonderful, but of little use if the food, drinks and service don&#8217;t match.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/mythosmozart1.jpg\" alt=\"Fron entrance of Mythos Mozart\" class=\"wp-image-74060\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/mythosmozart1.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/mythosmozart1-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">(Pop <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/entertainment\/mythos-mozart-experience\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"52203\">next door<\/a> if you want to follow Mozarttorte cake with an immersive Mozart experience)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fortunately, all is well on that front, too: a super selection of cakes (the raspberry and chocolate slice being a personal favourite), the traditional coffee house and Konditorei menu, and friendly and attentive staff.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our waiter and the cake counter staff even coped admirably with what will be known as the great strip incident of 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(My companion inadvertently ended up exposing their entire upper body to the world when their t-shirt came off with their jumper. Not an acceptable sight even in today&#8217;s Viennese coffee houses.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"how-to-get-to-sluka\">How to get to Sluka<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The location is about as central as it gets and just a short walk from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/stefansdom\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"294\">Stephansdom cathedral<\/a> at one end of the street or the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/entertainment\/opera\/staatsoper\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"1071\">State Opera House<\/a> at the other end.
