Or, as far as I could tell on my 2025 visit, radishes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The location certainly helps the Stephansplatz market stand out.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/mozarthaus.jpg\" alt=\"Mozarthaus front\" class=\"wp-image-42801\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/mozarthaus.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/mozarthaus-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">(Mozart&#8217;s old residence is nearby)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Townhouses and other buildings from the time of Mozart (whose <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/footsteps\/mozarthaus\/\">former home<\/a> is a mere street away) form a backdrop, not to mention the magnificent cathedral itself with the mosaic roof, towers, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/stephansdom-catacombs\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"5459\">catacombs<\/a> and long (long) history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fiakers (horse-drawn carriages) also gather behind Stephansdom, adding another historical touch to the ambience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You might even make a Christmas evening of it: browse the market, grab something to eat, then pop into the cathedral for one of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiqets.com\/en\/vienna-attractions-c60335\/tickets-for-st-stephens-cathedral-christmas-concerts-p1093278\/?partner=visitingvienna&amp;tq_campaign=LG_Xmas\" rel=\"sponsored\">advent concerts<\/a>* held there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div align=\"center\"><em>Ad:<\/em><br><\/div><div data-tiqets-widget=\"discovery\" data-cards-layout=\"horizontal\" data-slug-ids=\"pro1119393,pro1029872\" data-partner=\"visitingvienna\" data-tq-campaign=\"DA_ChristmasNew\"><\/div><script defer src=\"https:\/\/widgets.tiqets.com\/loader.js\"><\/script>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Expect just over 40 stalls, which makes the Stephansplatz market smaller than, say, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/christmasmarkets\/rathausplatz\/\">Christkindlmarkt<\/a>. But it still manages to cover pretty much the entire spectrum of market stands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Wandering around the 2025 edition, I saw (handcrafted) decorations from all sorts of materials, but also plenty from the secular side of life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, I found Italian truffles, jars of pesto, candles, woolen hats and other textiles, artistic candle holders and ceramics, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/eatingdrinking\/food\/lebkuchen-gingerbread\/\">Lebkuchen<\/a>, jewellery, wooden toys &amp; puzzles, novelty chocolates, Styrian wine &amp; schnapps (with a rather friendly man at the booth), honey and even kitchen utensils made from olive wood.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/stephansplatzchristmasmarket.jpg\" alt=\"Stephansplatz Christmas market and cathedral\" class=\"wp-image-53285\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/stephansplatzchristmasmarket.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/stephansplatzchristmasmarket-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">(Around the back)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Incidentally, if you want even more Lebkuchen, Vienna&#8217;s renowned Pirker Lebkuchen store actually sits opposite the Fiakers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Of course, mixed in among all this are the stands serving food and drink, seasonal and otherwise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I spotted pastries and potato fritters, soups served in giant bread rolls, Baumkuchen (spit cakes), K\u00e4seknockerl (pasta \/ small dumplings with melted cheese and fried onions), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/eatingdrinking\/food\/kaiserschmarren\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"6137\">Kaiserschmarren<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/eatingdrinking\/food\/leberkase\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"7203\">Leberk\u00e4sesemmel<\/a>, and similar. That looks rather lovely at night with all the historical buildings lit up (including a wing of the mighty <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sightseeing\/hofburg\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"2708\">Hofburg palatial complex<\/a>)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Alternatively, continue straight on beyond the Graben (going northwest) to reach the seasonal markets at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/christmasmarkets\/am-hof\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"858\">Am Hof<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/christmasmarkets\/freyung\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"215\">Freyung<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2026 dates and times<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>I don&#8217;t have 2026 dates at the time of writing, but the previous Stephansplatz market ran from November 8th to December 26th. Opening times were:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>11am to 9pm, but&#8230;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It closed at 4pm on December 24th<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>And closed at 7pm on December 25th and 26th<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to get to Stephansplatz<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The market is slap bang in the middle of town, so you should find it on any typical <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/transport\/walking-tour\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"50322\">walk around the city<\/a>: my self-guided suggested route actually ends at the cathedral.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Access the market right outside the Stephansplatz subway station on the U1 and U3 subway lines. You also reach it on bus lines 1A, 2A and 3A (the correct stop is also called Stephansplatz).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The same square often has another special advent offering, too.
