But there&#8217;s a lot to be said for looking <strong>down<\/strong>. Which means <del>a tour of the sewers<\/del> finding somewhere offering wonderful views of the city. But for something slightly higher up and involving less calories&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Donauturm (Danube Tower)<\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/the-donauturm-danube-tower\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/donauturm.jpg\" alt=\"View of the Danube Tower\" class=\"wp-image-43317\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/donauturm.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/donauturm-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">(Easily spotted from afar)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This purpose-built <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/the-donauturm-danube-tower\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"4919\">viewing tower<\/a> stands in a big park near <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/mapsgeography\/the-danube\/\">the Danube river<\/a>, so you get clear views across the entire city and beyond. It&#8217;s Austria&#8217;s tallest building, with fast lifts taking you up to a 360\u00b0 viewing platform.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a bonus, a revolving restaurant and coffee house up top let you rest your feet in the company of traditional fare and fine coffee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Stephansdom cathedral<\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/stephansdomsouthtower.jpg\" alt=\"View of Stephansdom and south tower\" class=\"wp-image-42836\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/stephansdomsouthtower.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/stephansdomsouthtower-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">(The south tower is on the right of the photo)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It has towers and it&#8217;s slap bang in the middle of the city. Sounds like the perfect place for a top view. And you can indeed &#8211; for a small fee &#8211; climb the cathedral&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/south-tower-stephansdom\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"5430\">South Tower<\/a> (343 steps) to get a good look across the rooftops.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You&#8217;ll find no coffee shop up there, but it does have a small souvenir shop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If climbing&#8217;s not your thing, then the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/north-tower-stephansdom\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"5428\">North Tower<\/a> has somewhat less impressive views, but a lift up to them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Giant Ferris Wheel<\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/risenraddistance.jpg\" alt=\"Distant view of the giant ferris wheel\" class=\"wp-image-44848\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/risenraddistance.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/risenraddistance-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">(A view, history and fairground ride in one)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With a diameter of over 60m, the view across the city rooftops and over the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/entertainment\/prater\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"35726\">Prater park<\/a> is rather good.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But it&#8217;s the whole experience, rather than the view, that makes the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/riesenrad\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"271\">Riesenrad giant Ferris wheel<\/a> worth a visit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The wheel forms a landmark part of the city, having provided a famous backdrop for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/songsfilms\/third-man-locations\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"31222\">memorable scenes<\/a> in <em>The Third Man<\/em>, <em>Before Sunrise<\/em>, and other movies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Most people just take a ride in a wagon, but you can also book a gastronomic experience on board.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div align=\"center\"><em>Ad:<\/em><br><\/div><div data-tiqets-widget=\"discovery\" data-cards-layout=\"horizontal\" data-slug-ids=\"exp206741,exp238032\" data-partner=\"visitingvienna\" data-tq-campaign=\"DA_ConcTour\"><\/div><script defer src=\"https:\/\/widgets.tiqets.com\/loader.js\"><\/script>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Gloriette<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This is a &#8220;thing&#8221; built on top of a hill in front of the Habsburg <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sightseeing\/palace-of-schonbrunn\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"1672\">summer palace<\/a> at Sch\u00f6nbrunn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I&#8217;m sure there&#8217;s a technical word to describe the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/schonbrunn\/gloriette\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"125\">Gloriette<\/a>, but it basically consists of an intricate fa\u00e7ade constructed to give palace inhabitants something nice to look at from their bedroom window. We&#8217;ve all done it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Anyway, you can look down from the roof over quite a bit of Vienna. It&#8217;s not the very best view of the city, but it&#8217;s a pretty good one (especially in summer with the Sch\u00f6nbrunn gardens and palace below).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As with the Riesenrad, the experience counts as much as the view: you&#8217;re standing on a bit of 18th-century history. Inevitably, the Gloriette also houses a caf\u00e9.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Karlskirche church<\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/karlskirche\/\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/karlskirchenight.jpg\" alt=\"Karlskirche at night\" class=\"wp-image-43321\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/karlskirchenight.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/karlskirchenight-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">(Look out from the balustraded terrace)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A spiral staircase takes you up and out onto the panorama terrace of this glorious <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/karlskirche\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"22144\">18th-century church<\/a>. This gives you the chance to look out across to the north and west of Vienna.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A particular highlight is seeing the famous <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/entertainment\/musikverein\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"5593\">Musikverein<\/a> more or less from above, so you can appreciate the building much better. Incidentally, I can recommend the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/entertainment\/events\/vivaldi-concert-karlskirche\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"74311\">evening concerts<\/a> at the church, too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Wien Museum<\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/wienmuseum2023d.jpg\" alt=\"The Wien Museum terrace\" class=\"wp-image-66186\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/wienmuseum2023d.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/wienmuseum2023d-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">(The Wien Museum terrace with the Karlskirche behind; press photo by Lisa Rastl \u00a9 Wien Museum)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You wait ages for a viewing platform to arrive and then two come along at once. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/museums\/wien-museum-karlsplatz\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"66174\">Karlskirche&#8217;s neighbour<\/a> also has a long and broad terrace with views of the square and over to the Musikverein, for example.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Reach the terrace from the self-service caf\u00e9 on the third upper floor. The Wien Museum building reopened in late 2023 after a massive refurbishment project, and you only pay to see special exhibitions on the top floor. So access to the terrace is free.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">MQ Libelle<\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/libelleview.jpg\" alt=\"View across into the old town\" class=\"wp-image-43298\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/libelleview.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/libelleview-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">(View of the Kunsthistorisches and Naturhistorisches museums from the Libelle)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another free-to-access viewing terrace, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/mq-libelle\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"26801\">MQ Libelle<\/a> sits atop the Leopold Museum in the grounds of the MuseumsQuartier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Go up using a lift on the outside of the building. You&#8217;ll find views across toward the old town (and a small caf\u00e9 up top, too).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Strangely, the best view from the Libelle might actually be of the Libelle event building to one side of the platform. The glass exterior creates the effect of a shimmering, translucent silk scarf. For example:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wien.gv.at\/freizeit\/lainzer-tiergarten\">Lainzer Tiergarten<\/a> nature park has a panorama point (often labelled the Wienerblick or Wiener Blick) just to the northwest of the St. Veiter Tor entrance<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>City <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wien.gv.at\/umwelt\/wald\/freizeit\/wandern\/wege\/wanderweg4.html\">hiking route 4<\/a> leads you up to the Jubil\u00e4umswarte: a 31m high lookout<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wien.gv.at\/umwelt\/wald\/freizeit\/wandern\/wege\/wanderweg1.html\">Hiking route 1<\/a> takes you up Kahlenberg &#8220;mountain&#8221;, which extends to just under 500m above sea level and looks over Vienna and the Danube valley<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/viewsjubilaeumswarte.jpg\" alt=\"Photo of a spiral viewing tower\" class=\"wp-image-80384\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/viewsjubilaeumswarte.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/viewsjubilaeumswarte-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">(The Jubil\u00e4umswarte viewing tower)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Kahlenberg has an observation tower at the top, as well as (surprise!) a restaurant and coffee house.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can reach both the Jubil\u00e4umswarte (Johann-Staud-Stra\u00dfe 80, 1160 Vienna) and Kahlenberg (Am Kahlenberg, 1190 Vienna) by car, but also by bus: line 52B to the Jubil\u00e4umswarte stop or line 38A to the Kahlenberg stop.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Spanish Riding School<\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/spanishridinglipizzaner.jpg\" alt=\"Head of a Lipizzaner horse\" class=\"wp-image-61082\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/spanishridinglipizzaner.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/06\/spanishridinglipizzaner-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">(The home of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/lipizzaner\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"292\">famous white stallions<\/a>; photo taken with permission of the SRS on a press tour)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It might seem odd to mention the arena of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/spanishridingschool\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"278\">Spanish Riding School<\/a> as a place for views. After all, you spend your time inside looking up at the horses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, the school&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/architectural-tour-spanish-riding-school\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"67016\">guided architectural tour<\/a> takes you several levels higher into the roof of this baroque construction. At the very top, two small windows offer a rare chance to see across to domes and the cathedral from the perspective of the Hofburg complex.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Bars and restaurants<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Several restaurants have high-rise locations providing dinner with a view. Which makes them excellent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/eatingdrinking\/romantic-dinners\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"46819\">options for a romantic dinner<\/a>. For example:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Bar &amp; restaurant in the SO\/ Vienna<\/h4>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/sofitel.jpg\" alt=\"The Sofitel Hotel\" class=\"wp-image-43319\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/sofitel.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/sofitel-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">(A new building for views of old Vienna)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The SO\/ Vienna has already become a bit of an iconic spot, despite only opening this century. Located on the banks of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/entertainment\/donaukanal\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"34106\">Danube canal<\/a>, the hotel&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/so-vienna.com\/bars-restaurants\/das-loft-restaurant\/\">Das LOFT<\/a> restaurant and bar offers a clear view across the old town rooftops.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Incidentally, &#8220;Das LOFT&#8221; is possibly even more famous for the illuminated ceiling designed by Pipilotti Rist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Ocean Sky &amp; Haus des Meeres<\/h4>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"334\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/oceanskyviews.jpg\" alt=\"View from the top of the Haus des Meeres\" class=\"wp-image-63978\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/oceanskyviews.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/oceanskyviews-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">(View from the top terrace; press photo courtesy of the Haus des Meeres)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An old flak tower close to the centre houses a rather fine and large <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/hausdesmeeres\/\">aquarium and vivarium<\/a> (the Haus des Meeres). And the roof-top terrace with glass walls offers a 360\u00b0 panorama of the entire city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oceansky.at\/\">Ocean Sky<\/a> restaurant and bar up there allows you to sup your <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/eatingdrinking\/food\/coffee-glossary\/\">melange<\/a> with views across the Viennese skyline. I&#8217;d advise making a reservation, should you choose to visit, especially if you want to sit out on the terrace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Reach the restaurant through the Haus des Meeres or via a dedicated external Panorama Lift inside the entrance foyer.
