for much of the 19th century, this was the actual main channel of the Danube.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rivers back then were fickle beasts, prone to switching course on a hydrological whim (much to the frustration of the locals).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, the end of the 1800s brought major water management projects that forced the Danube down a different fixed route and left a split-off section behind that became the Alte Donau by name and a lake by nature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The changes also created, for example, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/entertainment\/donaukanal\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"34106\">Donaukanal channel<\/a> of the Danube that drifts around Vienna&#8217;s old town.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Bathing and boating<\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/bathingjetty.jpg\" alt=\"A bathing jetty\" class=\"wp-image-50710\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/bathingjetty.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/bathingjetty-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">(A convenient jetty)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Most visitors to the Alte Donau go for the waterside leisure activities (be aware that many\/most of these will be seasonal), especially as a way to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/weather\/how-to-keep-cool\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"74122\">keep cool in summer<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A glimpse at Google Maps will reveal boat hire facilities and sailing schools, and busy times see the water peppered with paddle boats and similar.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can find a small cluster of boat hire opportunities around the lake&#8217;s centre at the U1 Alte Donau subway station, for example.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The city authorities also provide a range of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wien.gv.at\/en\/environment\/old-danube-recreation\">bathing options<\/a>: the alternatives range from simple lakeside seating to full-blown leisure complexes.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/altedonauboathire.jpg\" alt=\"Boat hire on the Alte Donau\" class=\"wp-image-51121\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/altedonauboathire.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/altedonauboathire-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">(One of the boat hire locations)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These opportunities include freely-accessible bathing jetties. Find a row of them along the eastern side of the lower part of the lake; look for <em>An der Unteren Alte Donau<\/em> on a map.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The city has also installed new bathing jetties and greened up the surrounding areas on the north side of the upper part of the lake; offer various managed facilities, such as toilets, a beach area, lockers, caf\u00e9s, sports fields and courts, etc. They typically open between late April or early May and mid-September.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You find three of these off the Arbeiterstrandbadstra\u00dfe road that runs along the southern side of the upper part of the Alte Donau:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wien.gv.at\/freizeit\/baeder\/uebersicht\/sommerbaeder\/angelibad.html\">Strandbad Angelibad<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wien.gv.at\/freizeit\/baeder\/uebersicht\/sommerbaeder\/altedonau.html\">Strandbad Alte Donau<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.burghauptmannschaft.at\/Betriebe\/Bundesbad-Alte-Donau.html\">Bundesbad Alte Donau<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The state first created these lidos many decades ago to improve the health of the population, so the trees planted back then now provide decent shade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The most popular public option, though, is the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wien.gv.at\/freizeit\/baeder\/uebersicht\/sommerbaeder\/gaensehaeufel.html\">Strandbad G\u00e4nseh\u00e4ufel<\/a>, which occupies its own island in the lower part of the Alte Donau, accessible from the western bank via a foot and road bridge.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/gaensehaeufel.jpg\" alt=\"Gateway to the G\u00e4nseh\u00e4ufel\" class=\"wp-image-50708\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/gaensehaeufel.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/gaensehaeufel-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">(Entrance gate to the G\u00e4nseh\u00e4ufel lido)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Among the delights at the G\u00e4nseh\u00e4ufel: a climbing park, beach, swimming pools, mini golf, basketball and beach volleyball, tennis courts, a stand up paddling and kayak centre, various places to eat, and even a naturist zone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The tickets to these public facilities really are inexpensive, though some aspects inside may incur an additional fee (such as certain activities or hiring a locker).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the past 2025 season, a standard day ticket for an adult for the G\u00e4nseh\u00e4ufel, for example, cost just \u20ac7.60 (!)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div align=\"center\"><em>Ad:<\/em><br><\/div><div data-tiqets-widget=\"discovery\" data-cards-layout=\"horizontal\" data-content-type=\"venue\" data-content-ids=\"205280,205281\" data-partner=\"visitingvienna\" data-tq-campaign=\"DA_Tours_River\"><\/div><script defer src=\"https:\/\/widgets.tiqets.com\/loader.js\"><\/script>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Riverside walks &amp; restaurants<\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/altedonauwalk.jpg\" alt=\"Lakeside walking path\" class=\"wp-image-50704\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/altedonauwalk.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/altedonauwalk-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">(You have plenty of decent walkways to follow)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can walk or cycle around the entire lake, which I roughly guess at somewhat over 12km in circumference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I wasn&#8217;t counting, but it took us around 4-5 hours to do the full circle slowly on foot, but that included significant breaks for lunch and photos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My two recommendations for nice walks along waterside footpaths are below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other parts are eminently walkable, but may involve long stretches of roadside pavement or be prone to lakeside houses, fences or other obstructions blocking your view of the lake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(You will still find the occasional restaurant, though, that takes you down to the waterfront.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Walk 1: Alte Donau South<\/h4>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/fish.jpg\" alt=\"Some fish\" class=\"wp-image-50705\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/fish.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/fish-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">(Fish of some kind; I&#8217;m a writer, not a zoologist)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For a scenic walk, take the U1 subway line to Alte Donau and cross over the water to the other bank via Wagramer Stra\u00dfe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Once on the other side, head east all the way to the southernmost tip of the lake. Continue around and work your way past the Dampfschiffhaufen half-island and back up to Strandbad G\u00e4nseh\u00e4ufel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This route is almost continuous foot\/cycle paths largely away from motorised traffic and running alongside the edges of the lake.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite the heavy recreational use of the area, the lake supports plenty of wildlife. Vienna&#8217;s pretty good at balancing nature and humanity.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We spotted waterfowl during our walk and, of course, fish (some rather large ones, too), and I read that the lake even has a handful of beavers.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/bootshaus.jpg\" alt=\"Bootshaus restaurant\" class=\"wp-image-50707\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/bootshaus.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/bootshaus-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">(The Bootshaus restarant)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As with just about any part of the lakeside, this walk takes you past open-air caf\u00e9s and restaurants like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/eatingdrinking\/cafespubsbars\/bootshaus\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"51127\">Das Bootshaus<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.strandcafe-wien.at\/\">Strandcaf\u00e9<\/a> on the eastern bank.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We had a fine lunch, for example, at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.schinakl.com\/\">Restaurant zum Schinakl<\/a>, which lies just a bit further on past G\u00e4nseh\u00e4ufel on the western bank.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Walk 2: the Wasserpark<\/h4>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/wasserpark.jpg\" alt=\"Pond in the Wasserpark\" class=\"wp-image-50703\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/wasserpark.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/wasserpark-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">(The self-contained water park)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For a quick and quiet walk, try the small 0.144km<sup>2<\/sup> Wasserpark pond area at the western tip of the Alte Donau (close to the Neue Donau U6 subway station: leave by the exit marked Strandb\u00e4der). I often go there to sketch trees and water landscapes with friends.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is a more isolated area known for its water birds. We saw a heron, for example. The eastern edge, where the Alte Donau proper begins had a couple of nice-looking restaurants: the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.neuerwirt.at\/\">NEUERWirt<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lacreperie.at\/\">La Cr\u00eaperie<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you visit the Alte Donau in the colder seasons, then check whether restaurants and similar are actually open.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Lichterfest<\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/lichterfest.jpg\" alt=\"Festival of Lights on the Alte Donau\" class=\"wp-image-45654\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/lichterfest.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/lichterfest-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">(Photo \u00a9 Arbeitsgemeinschaft \u201cDie Sch\u00f6ne Alte Donau\u201d)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Finally&#8230;an almost-annual event at the lake is the summer Radio Wien Lichterfest (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/entertainment\/events\/lichterfest\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"17517\">more details here<\/a>).
