Though the Viennese seem to be arguing about whether it&#8217;s a drab moth or an iridescent butterfly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Anyway, the location at number 16 can trace its own history back to the 1300s and the current building to the late 1700s. Inside, though, is a modern <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/eatingdrinking\/cafespubsbars\/konditorei\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"23020\">Konditorei<\/a> (a caf\u00e9-confectionery) belonging to the Oberlaa chain.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I&#8217;ve <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/eatingdrinking\/cafespubsbars\/konditorei-oberlaa\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"22922\">introduced that chain elsewhere<\/a> and normally refuse to cover individual branches here at Visiting Vienna. Including the gallery of colour in the cake counter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Two storeys and windows on three sides let you look down on city centre scenes and people, an opportunity much helped by the conservatory-like extension on one side that inexplicably manages to merge relatively unobtrusively into its surroundings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So you can watch the activity on Seilergasse with its upmarket boutiques, antique shops and galleries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Or gaze across Neuer Markt itself with its curiously indefinable mix: here an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/donnerbrunnen\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"61495\">18th-century fountain<\/a>, there a new hotel. Here a modern luxury brand, there an old-style bistro in a baroque townhouse. Not to mention a working monastery with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/kapuzinerkirche-capuchin-church\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"75265\">church<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/kapuzinergruft\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"245\">rather famous crypt<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div align=\"center\"><em>Ad:<\/em><br><\/div><div data-tiqets-widget=\"discovery\" data-cards-layout=\"horizontal\" data-slug-ids=\"exp206741,exp238032\" data-partner=\"visitingvienna\" data-tq-campaign=\"DA_ConcTour\"><\/div><script defer src=\"https:\/\/widgets.tiqets.com\/loader.js\"><\/script>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Opposite Oberlaa, Haydn once composed the music that would become today&#8217;s national anthem of Germany. (Though the building is long gone.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Inside, you often find quite a mix of customers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Last time I dropped in for breakfast, I sat surrounded by both young families and elderly ladies, for example. The hum of conversation and, dare I say it, gossip hung in the air.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Oh, and plenty of Viennese dialects expressing dissatisfaction with the world, politics, the weather, TV etc.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The locals thus continued a tradition that dates back to when their ancestors shook their heads sadly at Roman aqueducts that failed to respect the architectural heritage of Germanic tribal villages.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"337\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/oberlaabreakfast.jpg\" alt=\"Wiener breakfast\" class=\"wp-image-74058\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/oberlaabreakfast.jpg 337w, https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/08\/oberlaabreakfast-225x300.jpg 225w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 337px) 100vw, 337px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">(Enjoying a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/eatingdrinking\/food\/breakfast-in-vienna\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"82605\">Viennese breakfast<\/a> outside in summer)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite its size, the place was already nearly full by 9.30am on a Saturday morning when I ate my <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/eatingdrinking\/food\/breakfast-in-vienna\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"82605\">simple Wiener Fr\u00fchst\u00fcck<\/a> with roll, croissant, a boiled egg, butter (organic) and jam.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The ubiquity of the Wiener Fr\u00fchst\u00fcck in Vienna makes it hard to stand out, but Oberlaa has nicely crisp croissants and presents it all on a multi-level serving stand.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>More importantly, the service is remarkably fast and extraordinarily friendly. Wave if you go. I&#8217;m the guy talking in accented German about art, music, life, the universe, and, um, football.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to get there<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Neuer Markt lies close to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/transport\/walking-tour\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"50322\">walking routes<\/a> that take you through the old town sights. If you enjoy the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/eatingdrinking\/cafespubsbars\/konditorei\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"23020\">Konditorei concept<\/a>, then try another nearby alternative: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/eatingdrinking\/cafespubsbars\/sluka-karntner-strase\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"42425\">Sluka on K\u00e4rntner Stra\u00dfe<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Subway: Stephansplatz (on the U3 line) is a short walk away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tram\/bus: Slip up from the Oper\/Karlsplatz tram stop (lines 1, 2, D and 71, for example).
