Much of the filming also took place in the city of Budapest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I don&#8217;t have the local expertise to map out locations in Hungary&#8217;s capital, but media information mentions such locations as Bedo House, the P\u00e1risi Udvar Hotel, the Postal Museum, the National Museum of Hungary, and the V\u00edgsz\u00ednh\u00e1z Theatre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-background\" style=\"background-color:#ededed\">(<strong>Warning<\/strong>: may contain minor spoilers. Note that episodes follow the Austrian numbering system: one for each case in this season. So Episode 1 is <em>Deadly Communion<\/em>, Episode 2 is <em>The God of Shadows<\/em>, etc.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This season is again based on Frank Tallis&#8217;s wonderful books and is again produced by MR FILM and Endor Productions in a co-production with ORF, ZDF, and RedArrow Studios (with the able support of the National Film Office Hungary, Fernsehfonds Austria, and Filmfonds Wien).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Episode 1 Deadly Communion<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The opening view over Vienna has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/stefansdom\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"294\">Stephansdom cathedral<\/a> as the central landmark.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/mariatheresastatue.jpg\" alt=\"Statue of Maria Theresa\" class=\"wp-image-43838\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/mariatheresastatue.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/mariatheresastatue-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">(Empress Maria Theresa)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We then zoom in to see a location familiar from previous seasons, but which doesn&#8217;t play any further role in the episode: the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/museums\/natural-history-museum\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"252\">Naturhistorisches Museum<\/a> (where Amelia Lydgate works and which featured significantly in Season 2&#8217;s final case).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The statue in that brief scene is of Empress Maria Theresa (1717-1780). The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/footsteps\/maria-theresa-monument\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"6483\">1888 monument<\/a> in her honour sits on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/maria-theresien-platz\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"47208\">Maria-Theresien-Platz<\/a> square, with the museum behind it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The fashion house<\/h4>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/loosandgrossesmichaelerhaus.jpg\" alt=\"Loos House and Gro\u00dfes Michaelerhaus\" class=\"wp-image-45255\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/loosandgrossesmichaelerhaus.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/loosandgrossesmichaelerhaus-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">(The Loos house is on the left. Haydn used to live in the house on the right!)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/winter-palace\/loos-house\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"3114\">Loos House<\/a> stands in for the exterior shots of the fashion house run by Kristina Vogl. (The interior is Hazai Bank in Budapest.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This relatively unassuming building lies on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/michaelerplatz-2\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"27254\">Michaelerplatz square<\/a> right in the centre of Vienna and close to one entrance to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sightseeing\/hofburg\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"2708\">Hofburg palace complex<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A couple of times we see the square through the pillared front of the building.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/viennabloodmichaelerplatz.jpg\" alt=\"Michaelerplatz at dawn\" class=\"wp-image-55450\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/viennabloodmichaelerplatz.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/viennabloodmichaelerplatz-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">(The view of Michaelerplatz from the Loos House)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Viennese society got quite a shock when the Loos House went up in 1912. The aggressively modern look represented a significant departure for the city centre, where architecture was normally inspired by the past.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The building&#8217;s design also contrasted sharply with the richly-appointed Habsburg residence opposite; much tutting presumably emerged from the imperial chambers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Street scenes<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>We only found two quick street scenes from Vienna.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/griechengasse.jpg\" alt=\"Griechengasse\" class=\"wp-image-48696\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/griechengasse.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/griechengasse-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">(Griechengasse)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One is a look up Griechengasse just before Max and the Inspector arrive at the fashion house. As they talk with the man&#8217;s employer, they pass through parts of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/zentralfriedhof\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"301\">Zentralfriedhof<\/a> cemetery.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/cemeterychurch.jpg\" alt=\"St. Charles Borromeo Cemetery Church\" class=\"wp-image-47198\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/cemeterychurch.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/cemeterychurch-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">(The St. Charles Borromeo Cemetery Church)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We see them walk through the arcaded area on the road that leads into the huge complex from the main entrance (Tor 2). In the background, you can also spot the dome of the cemetery church.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Zentralfriedhof is open to visitors and provides a final home to a number of illustrious names.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Beethoven, Schubert, Brahms, and Johann Strauss (father &amp; son) are all buried in this cemetery, for example. We saw the location in the very first Vienna Blood episode too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Episode 2 The God of Shadows<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>An early scene in Epsiode 2 shows Max in his workplace, with an aerial view of the hospital. This is the former Otto Wagner Hospital familiar to us from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/songsfilms\/vienna-blood-locations\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"22811\">Season 1<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/kircheamsteinhof.jpg\" alt=\"The Kirche am Steinhof\" class=\"wp-image-55442\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/kircheamsteinhof.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/kircheamsteinhof-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">(The Kirche am Steinhof; press photo by Lisa Rastl and \u00a9 Wien Museum)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A golden dome appears at the rear of the hospital grounds. Otto Wagner designed this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/footsteps\/kirche-am-steinhof\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"63812\">Kirche am Steinhof<\/a> in the early 1900s, and it now comes under the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sightseeing\/vienna-museums\/wien-museum\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"26812\">Wien Museum<\/a> group of sites.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A classic of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/culture\/wiener-moderne\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"28303\">Wiener Moderne<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/culture\/jugendstil\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"31716\">Jugendstil<\/a> design, the building has been described as Europe&#8217;s first modern church.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Street scenes<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>As in the season&#8217;s first episode, we only get brief glimpses of Viennese streets.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/viennabloodgriechengasse.jpg\" alt=\"View up Griechengasse\" class=\"wp-image-55444\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/viennabloodgriechengasse.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/viennabloodgriechengasse-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">(Griechengasse)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We see a carriage on Griechengasse again, this time coming toward us down the incline.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/policestation.jpg\" alt=\"The University Archive\" class=\"wp-image-48692\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/policestation.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/policestation-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">(The police headquarters)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We have a very brief shot of the front of the police station, which is the Vienna University Archive on Postgasse.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/lagergasse.jpg\" alt=\"Lagergasse\" class=\"wp-image-48775\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/lagergasse.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/lagergasse-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">(Lagergasse)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And another quick shot of Lagergasse, which we also saw in the second case of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/songsfilms\/vienna-blood-season-2\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"38572\">Season 2<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Belvedere<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Max and Clara sit together outdoors to discuss the case and how Clara might help. Behind them is a topiary-lined view up to a lovely-looking palace. This baroque beauty now houses one of Austria&#8217;s most prestigious art collections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Upper Belvedere has numerous works by Gustav Klimt on display, for example, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/museums\/belvedere-sites\/kiss\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"1119\">this notable treat<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Dr Ignaz Seipel Platz<\/h4>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/viennabloodignatz.jpg\" alt=\"Dr Ignaz Seipel Platz\" class=\"wp-image-55446\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/viennabloodignatz.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/viennabloodignatz-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">(Dr Ignaz Seipel Platz. The composer Franz Schubert went to school in the building on the right of the picture)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Max and the inspector chase a suspect across Dr Ignaz Seipel Platz, a central square rich in history. For example, it has a baroque Jesuit church first consecrated in 1631. Former university buildings from the 18th-century now house the Austrian Academy of Sciences.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I suspect the scene pays homage to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/songsfilms\/third-man-locations\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"31222\">The Third Man<\/a>. The large shadow cast by a man carrying balloons mirrors a similar scene in that movie. The II refers to his reign as Holy Roman Emperor (which ended with that empire&#8217;s dissolution in 1806). The I refers to his reign as Emperor of Austria (which was founded in 1804).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So Franz had the joy of being a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/culture\/austrian-empire\/\">double Emperor<\/a> for a short while. A joy tempered, however, by Napoleon running rampage around Europe at the time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Episode 3 Death is now a Welcome Guest<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The final case features relatively few exterior Viennese shots as far as we can tell.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Familiar scenes<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>We catch brief glimpses of streets and locations that we also saw in previous seasons and episodes. You&#8217;ll spot the exact locations at the lower end of the area, close to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/museums\/belvedere-sites\/lower-belvedere\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"3384\">Lower Belvedere palace<\/a> and (I think) the northeast exit on to Rennweg.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And that concludes a brief foray into the Vienna of Season 3.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Season 4<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The good news is Season 4 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/songsfilms\/vienna-blood-season-4\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"78652\">featured far more Viennese scenes<\/a> (the authorities now offer a very attractive package to filmmakers that has seen several high-profile productions <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/vienna-book-song-film\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"1684\">filmed here<\/a> recently).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>And we&#8217;re back for Season 3 of Vienna Blood with a location guide for those parts filmed in the titular city.
