However, we matched what we saw on our TV with our local knowledge and can confirm the exterior shots at least were filmed in the city.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Staatsoper<\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/aftertheopernball.jpg\" alt=\"After the Opernball\" class=\"wp-image-43930\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/aftertheopernball.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/aftertheopernball-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">(The opera house after hosting the annual ball)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The episode begins with an aerial view of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/entertainment\/opera\/staatsoper\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"1071\">Vienna state opera house<\/a> (Staatsoper), built in 1869 and, by the way, a key location in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/songsfilms\/mission-impossible-5-locations\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"4346\">Mission Impossible 5<\/a>. Normally, she would have to pass a queue of folk eagerly awaiting a table at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/eatingdrinking\/cafespubsbars\/cafe-sacher\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"22285\">Caf\u00e9 Sacher<\/a> (on the left of the photo).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Stephansplatz<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Then we cut to Ivanovna walking across a square with a large historical building covered in scaffolding on her right.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/jackryanstephansplatz.jpg\" alt=\"Stephansplatz square\" class=\"wp-image-55469\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/jackryanstephansplatz.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/jackryanstephansplatz-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">(Ivanova walks toward us here)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That square is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/stephansplatz\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"83491\">Stephansplatz<\/a> and the building is Vienna&#8217;s landmark gothic cathedral (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/stefansdom\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"294\">Stephansdom<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Russian would have reached the area quicker just by going down K\u00e4rntner Stra\u00dfe, which emerges onto the square. But perhaps she took a scenic route to enjoy the lovely Viennese old town.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Stallburggasse<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Next we find Ivanovna and her follower on Stallburggasse, heading west. That street is actually roughly half-way between the opera house and Stephansplatz.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/jackryanstallburg.jpg\" alt=\"View down Stallburggasse\" class=\"wp-image-55467\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/jackryanstallburg.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/jackryanstallburg-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">(Stallburggasse with the Michaelerkirche spire in the distance)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The background of the shots down Stallburggasse includes a couple of notable historical buildings:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The spire belongs to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/michaelerkirche\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"27662\">Michaelerkirche<\/a>, a 13th century church on Michaelerplatz square<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The building on the left of the photo is the Renaissance <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/stallburg\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"30886\">Stallburg<\/a>, which still contains the stables of Vienna&#8217;s famous <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/spanishridingschool\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"278\">Spanish Riding School<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/jackryanstallburggasse.jpg\" alt=\"Stallburggasse\" class=\"wp-image-55468\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/jackryanstallburggasse.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/jackryanstallburggasse-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">(Ivanova goes into the arched gateway on the left)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ivanovna walks past the Kovacek &amp; Zetter gallery and other storefronts before turning into the entrance gates at Stallburggasse 4. Ryan is waiting for her inside the building.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Dorotheergasse<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>A little later, Ryan leaves the building and meets November to walk and talk. They go back up Stallburggasse and turn left at the City-Galerie onto Dorotheergasse, which they then meander down.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/jackryandorotheergasse.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-55462\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/jackryandorotheergasse.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/jackryandorotheergasse-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">(View down Dorotheergasse with the museum sign on the left)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This takes them past the main site of Vienna&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/museums\/jewish-museum\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"1591\">Jewish Museum<\/a>, whose entrance appears on the left of the shots.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I rather hoped they&#8217;d keep going for a few more paces before we cut away, as that would have taken them past the lovely <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/eatingdrinking\/cafespubsbars\/cafe-hawelka\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"9388\">Hawelka<\/a>, one of Vienna&#8217;s more famous coffee houses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Railway station<\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/jackryanhauptbahnhof.jpg\" alt=\"Entrance to Wien Hauptbahnhof railway station\" class=\"wp-image-55463\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/jackryanhauptbahnhof.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/jackryanhauptbahnhof-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">(Main entrance to Hauptbahnhof)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The final Vienna locations we found in this episode are in and around the Hauptbahnhof: Vienna&#8217;s main railway station. The interior and platform scenes certainly look original.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The trains are genuine \u00d6BB (Austrian Federal Railways), too, although you won&#8217;t normally get the doors to open mid-journey as in Ryan&#8217;s fight scene. Cough, health and safety, cough.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Semmering<\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/semmering2025.jpg\" alt=\"A forested mountainous landscape\" class=\"wp-image-86299\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/semmering2025.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/10\/semmering2025-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">(Semmering is not an area well suited to runways. But it does make a great <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/activities\/day-trips\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"18205\">day trip from Vienna<\/a> for a spot of skiing or hiking)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As an aside, Ryan throws off his US pursuers by having them wait for his train from Vienna in the town of Semmering, rather than his true destination.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We enjoyed the aircraft landing at Semmering&#8217;s alleged airport. This small town does have a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/mapsgeography\/alps\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"5177\">rail connection<\/a> to Vienna, but you&#8217;d struggle to find enough flat land to build a decent runway given Semmering&#8217;s location in the mountains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">And finally\u2026<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Jack Ryan is not the only fictional CIA representative to find his way to Vienna.
