Like the Fleischmarkt in Vienna: far enough away from the centre to avoid crowds, but close enough to reach easily on foot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The street begins a hop, skip and jump northeast of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/stefansdom\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"294\">Stephansdom cathedral<\/a> and has, for example, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/jugendstil-centre\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"34058\">several Jugendstil joys<\/a> and the imposing Byzantine look of the Griechenkirche zur Heiligen Dreifaltigkeit church.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The predecessor to today&#8217;s Hotel Post Wien (at Fleischmarkt 24) hosted the likes of Mozart, Haydn, Nietzsche, and Chopin. Turn right at the eastern end of the road to find streets and buildings that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/songsfilms\/vienna-blood-locations\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"22811\">stand in<\/a> for 1900 Vienna in TV productions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And yet the area remains (relatively) tranquil.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"355\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/diglasfleischmarkt1900.jpg\" alt=\"Fleischmarkt sometime after 1904\" class=\"wp-image-59906\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/diglasfleischmarkt1900.jpg 355w, https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/diglasfleischmarkt1900-237x300.jpg 237w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 355px) 100vw, 355px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">(Fleischmarkt sometime after 1904 with the Griechenkirche in the background; produced by Br\u00fcder Kohn KG (B. At the time, coffee was still just a little-known (to Europeans) wild flower in Africa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jump forward a few centuries and house number 16 has been serving the beverage since 1875, now as the Cottage Roasters coffee shop in the Diglas premises. Sister coffee houses include the Diglas <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/eatingdrinking\/cafespubsbars\/cafe-diglas\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"43560\">Wollzeile<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/eatingdrinking\/cafespubsbars\/cafe-diglas-schottenstift\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"54085\">Schottenstift<\/a> locations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The interior seems to mimic the broader Fleischmarkt ambience. Low vaulted ceilings hint at history and tradition, while the long, thin design takes you ever further away from any city hubbub.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div align=\"center\"><em>Ad:<\/em><br><\/div><div data-tiqets-widget=\"discovery\" data-cards-layout=\"horizontal\" data-slug-ids=\"exp205287,exp205280\" data-partner=\"visitingvienna\" data-tq-campaign=\"DA_CityWalk\"><\/div><script defer src=\"https:\/\/widgets.tiqets.com\/loader.js\"><\/script>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The effect feels like you woke up in a past where all is not quite as it seems. Just as with the Wollzeile Diglas, it pays to take a closer look and find modern flair combined with tradition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the front: stylish stools and chairs along with weighty coffee house tables. Coffee cups decorate a wall near the entrance to create an innovative and stylish lighting effect.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the rear: a more intimate layout with a book-lined niche and bucolic scenes covering patterned wallpaper. But an old gilded picture frame surrounds an avant garde black and white photo. And coffee cups hang from a glass chandelier.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/coffeeroastersdiglasfleischmarkt1.jpg\" alt=\"Coffee and cake board\" class=\"wp-image-78586\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/coffeeroastersdiglasfleischmarkt1.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/coffeeroastersdiglasfleischmarkt1-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">(Cakes and coffee&#8230;what more can you ask for?)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A self-service location, the caf\u00e9 has its own specialty coffees (my <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/eatingdrinking\/food\/coffee-glossary\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"1863\">melange<\/a> was excellent), craft beer and other drinks, baguettes, pastries and snacks, and cakes from the Diglas in-house patisserie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the past, we&#8217;ve consumed vast quantities of fine cake here. I resisted temptation on my last visit, but noticed the slices looked notably generous by current Viennese standards (especially the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/eatingdrinking\/food\/vienna-cakes\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"22533\">Schnitten<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Everything just feels very genuine. Just leave the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/stephansplatz\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"83491\">cathedral square<\/a> (Stephansplatz) via Rotenturmstra\u00dfe and turn right after a couple of streets to get onto Fleischmarkt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Subway: a short stroll from Schwedenplatz station (on the U1 and U4 lines) or even the very central Stephansplatz station (U1 and U3).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tram\/bus: tram lines 1 and 2 also stop at Schwedenplatz.
