But several outdoor scenes take place at historical Viennese sites.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to Vienna, other Corsage locations included Schloss Eckartsau and Semmering in Lower Austria, a private chateau in Coincy (France), Ancona on the Italian Adriatic coast, Belgium, and Luxembourg.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We&#8217;ve simply matched what we saw on the screen with our local knowledge to identify the three key exterior Vienna locations. All are freely-accessible to the public. Here goes\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-background\" style=\"background-color:#ededed\">(<strong>Warning<\/strong>: may contain very minor spoilers.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Hofburg<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sightseeing\/hofburg\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"2708\">Hofburg<\/a> is the Habsburg palace in the city centre and the real former home to Empress Elisabeth and her husband, Emperor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/culture\/franz-joseph\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"26307\">Franz Joseph<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Unlike your typical palace, the Hofburg consists of a set of wings, extensions, and courtyards that create more of a complex rather than a single stand-out building. The fa\u00e7ade we see opposite is the Leopoldinischer Hofburg tract from the 17th century.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The buildings around that courtyard actually include Elisabeth&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/winter-palace\/kaiserappartements\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"2658\">former apartment rooms<\/a> and house the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/winter-palace\/sisi-museum\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"2539\">Sisi Museum<\/a>, where you learn about her life and character.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In one scene, you also glimpse a statue on the left side of the courtyard. That is part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/winter-palace\/emperor-franz-monument\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"52378\">large monument<\/a> to the first Emperor of Austria (Franz I). The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/culture\/austrian-empire\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"12856\">Austrian Empire<\/a> preceded the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/culture\/austria-hungary\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"12858\">Austro-Hungarian Empire<\/a> that existed at the time Corsage is set.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Schweizerhof<\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/corsageschweizerhof1.jpg\" alt=\"The Schweizerhof in Vienna\" class=\"wp-image-55847\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/corsageschweizerhof1.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/corsageschweizerhof1-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">(Only missing a carriage)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the film, Empress Elisabeth arrives or departs once or twice from the small Schweizerhof, a courtyard reached from the Innerer Burghof via the 16th-century <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/winter-palace\/schweizertor\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"58537\">Schweizertor<\/a> (a decorated renaissance gateway you can just about see at the rear and to the right of the photo above).<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/corsageschweizerhof.jpg\" alt=\"Hofkapelle and Schweizerhof\" class=\"wp-image-55820\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/corsageschweizerhof.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/corsageschweizerhof-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">(Carriages park outside these steps)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Schweizerhof has bits dating back to the very early 13th-century days of the Hofburg, including a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/winter-palace\/hofburgkapelle\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"57099\">Gothic chapel<\/a> accessible via the outdoor steps we see in the movie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This courtyard also provides access to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/museums\/schatzkammer\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"256\">Schatzkammer<\/a>. Home to the Imperial treasury and crown jewels, the Schatzkammer includes pieces the empress herself wore, as well as (apparently) the key to her coffin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Maria-Theresien-Platz<\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/mariatheresienplatz1.jpg\" alt=\"View across Maria-Theresien-Platz\" class=\"wp-image-47894\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/mariatheresienplatz1.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/mariatheresienplatz1-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">(The square from ground level)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>An early scene has a welcome reception for the Emperor and Empress outside the newly-built <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/museums\/natural-history-museum\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"252\">Naturhistorisches Museum<\/a> on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/maria-am-gestade-church\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"27742\">Maria-Theresien-Platz square<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The aerial view would have been from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/museums\/khm\/overview\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"1446\">Kunsthistorisches Museum<\/a> opposite, which also gives us a look at the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/footsteps\/maria-theresa-monument\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"6483\">monument<\/a> to Empress Maria Theresa (actually unveiled around a decade after the events of Corsage).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The unfinished dome of the Naturhistorisches Museum in the film is a nice nod to history, since the building was only formally completed in 1889.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Sch\u00f6nbrunn Palace<\/h2>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/schoenbrunnpalace1.jpg\" alt=\"Sch\u00f6nbrunn Palace\" class=\"wp-image-15694\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/schoenbrunnpalace1.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/schoenbrunnpalace1-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">(<strong>Schlo\u00df Sch\u00f6nbrunn, Wien<\/strong> \u2013 the view from the gardens)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And, finally, we have <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sightseeing\/palace-of-schonbrunn\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"1672\">Sch\u00f6nbrunn palace<\/a>. The gorgeous tourist magnet that is the &#8220;summer&#8221; palace of the Habsburgs and another home once used by the real Elisabeth. The larger of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/schonbrunn\/tour\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"161\">self-guided palace tours<\/a> takes you to her salon and dressing room, for example.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We see two sets of exterior shots, I believe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One set shows Elisabeth and her young daughter on a nocturnal ride through the main <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/schonbrunn\/gardens-park\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"15260\">gardens<\/a> behind the palace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A second set has the Empress out riding again, this time to the east of the gardens in the park.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The avenue Elisabeth rides down is the so-called Obeliskenallee and has a Naiad fountain at its middle.
