The piece noted that\u2026<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u2026the world would look different had his cradle not rocked in Barcelona twenty years before the new century dawned<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Fifty years on seems a poignant moment for the Albertina to pay commemorative tribute to this genius in the form of its Picasso exhibition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is the museum&#8217;s first significant Picasso-related event since 2010&#8217;s <em>Peace and Freedom<\/em> exhibition: a cooperation with Tate Liverpool that looked at how the artist dealt with the theme of conflict and peace across the years of the cold war.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"360\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/picasso3.jpg\" alt=\"Picasso's Woman with Green Hat\" class=\"wp-image-58678\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/picasso3.jpg 360w, https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/picasso3-240x300.jpg 240w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 360px) 100vw, 360px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">(Pablo Picasso, Woman with Green Hat, 1947; oil on canvas; The ALBERTINA Museum, Vienna \u2013 The Batliner Collection \u00a9 Succession Picasso\/ Bildrecht, Vienna 2023)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Albertina collection covers over six decades of Picasso&#8217;s output and runs from the 1900 <em>Au caf\u00e9<\/em> drawing to 1967&#8217;s <em>Naked Woman with Bird and Flute Player<\/em> painting.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Around 60 of these works feature in the exhibition: paintings, drawings, lithographs, ceramics, etchings, and a whole room of linocuts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The variety of media and wide timeline produce a few surprises for anyone just used to Picasso&#8217;s cubist output. Or the 1911\/1912 <em>L&#8217;\u00e9tag\u00e8re<\/em> painting for analytical cubism. Helpful display texts add biographical context and an explanation of techniques and motifs to many works.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Even for the uninitiated like me, the journey makes the artistic transition across Picasso&#8217;s active years clear and reveals the role his art played at various stages of his life: from self-healing to raging against the dying of the light.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"tickets\">Dates, tickets &amp; tips<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Take a tour through Picasso&#8217;s career from March 17th to June 18th, 2023. An entrance ticket for the Albertina from any valid source includes access to all the exhibitions within.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You&#8217;ll find some genuinely Renaissance artists in the Albertina&#8217;s concurrent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/museums\/bruegel-drawings\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"55769\">Bruegel and his Time<\/a> exhibition of drawings from 16th-century Netherlands (ends on May 24th, 2023).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For much of the same period, the museum also has, for example, a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/museums\/alex-katz-exhibition\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"56697\">solo exhibition<\/a> for Alex Katz (ends May 29th, 2023).
