But for a closer look around and a behind-the-scenes visit to the renaissance stables (and Lipizzaner stallions), you need to join a guided tour.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Riding School offers a near-daily <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/tour-spanish-riding-school\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"41340\">general tour<\/a> and a rarer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/architectural-tour-spanish-riding-school\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"67016\">architectural tour<\/a> (both cover much of the same ground), for example. But visiting most of the nave and the towers requires tickets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Stephansdom offers a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/stephansdom-catacombs\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"5459\">guided tour of the catacombs<\/a> that forms its own product (or is part of an all-inclusive option). They also provide free audio guides with a ticket for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/stephansdom-tour\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"5420\">main interior<\/a>. The theme continues within, with giant columned halls and statues of the ancients. And then you have the imposing historical assembly rooms for the various parliamentary houses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fortunately, parliament offers regular <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/parliament-tour\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"55963\">English-language tours<\/a> of its interiors to provide a literal glimpse of democracy at work. This is so close to Vienna, it practically counts as a suburb<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/mapsgeography\/day-trip-melk-abbey\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"62841\">Stift Melk<\/a>: another one with around a millennium of history. A little further away but a grand Baroque complex atop a hill with a remarkable library. Sometimes you don&#8217;t know if you should be looking at the ceilings or the displays.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The 19th-century <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/museums\/khm\/overview\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"1446\">Kunsthistorisches museum<\/a>, for example, leaves you open-mouthed once you pass the ticket check.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sightseeing\/vienna-museums\/belvedere\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"3308\">Belvedere<\/a> has marble halls that make it very clear that the 18th-century owner had:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Money<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Extroverted interior designers<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A dictionary with the words humility and modesty scratched out<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Not too many museums offer specific architectural or history tours, though, with their tour focus mostly on the actual exhibitions. Some exceptions I&#8217;ve come across:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/museums\/natural-history-museum\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"252\">Naturhistorisches Museum<\/a> offers English-language &#8220;cultural-historical&#8221; tours through this 19th-century jewel and up to the roof<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sightseeing\/vienna-museums\/mq\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"4030\">MuseumsQuartier<\/a> has tours that take you around this contemporary art and cultural complex, which once housed the imperial stables<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"music\">Music &amp; theatre<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Of course, seeing inside Vienna&#8217;s world-leading opera and concert houses, for example, requires nothing more than a ticket to, well, an opera (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/entertainment\/opera\/cheap-tickets\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"881\">not as expensive as you might think<\/a>) or concert.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, some of the leading venues also offer tours that take you places you might never otherwise see.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Musikverein<\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/musikvereinkarlskirche.jpg\" alt=\"Musikverein and Karlskirche\" class=\"wp-image-42835\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/musikvereinkarlskirche.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/musikvereinkarlskirche-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">(Noted for the astonishing acoustics)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the great concert halls, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/entertainment\/musikverein\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"5593\">Musikverein<\/a> opened in 1870. Folk such as Anton Bruckner, Gustav Mahler and Johann Strauss II premiered works here. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/entertainment\/events\/new-years-concert\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"6308\">New Year&#8217;s Concert<\/a> given by the Wiener Philharmoniker in the Gro\u00dfer Musikvereinssaal goes out live to over 90 countries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/entertainment\/musikverein-tour\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"19071\">in-house English tours<\/a> take you to, for example, a rehearsal room, the Brahms Saal and that imposing and impressive Gro\u00dfer Musikvereinssaal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Konzerthaus<\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/konzerthaus.jpg\" alt=\"The Konzerthaus\" class=\"wp-image-43637\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/konzerthaus.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/konzerthaus-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">(Opened in 1913)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Musikverein&#8217;s almost-as-prestigious colleague is the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/entertainment\/konzerthaus\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"5586\">Konzerthaus<\/a>. They built it too late for a Johann Strauss II premiere. But not too late for a Richard Strauss one (on the building&#8217;s first night). Or Alexander von Zemlinsky. Or Arnold Sch\u00f6nberg.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>English tours of the building take in backstage areas as well as the four concert halls. And, with a bit of luck, you might even catch a rehearsal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Staatsoper<\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/aftertheopernball.jpg\" alt=\"After the Opernball\" class=\"wp-image-43930\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/aftertheopernball.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/aftertheopernball-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">(The day after the famous <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/entertainment\/events\/opernball\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"22621\">Opernball<\/a>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the opera front, the 1869 Wiener Staatsoper slides confidently into the same tier as Milan&#8217;s La Scala, London&#8217;s Royal Opera House or New York&#8217;s Metropolitan Opera.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The regular in-house <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/entertainment\/opera\/staatsoper-tour\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"17051\">English guided tours<\/a> offer a feast of anecdotes and a trip to places mere opera goers can never see (such as the private chamber reserved for the use of Emperor Franz Joseph).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Theater an der Wien<\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/theateranderWien2024.jpg\" alt=\"Front view of a theater\" class=\"wp-image-78173\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/theateranderWien2024.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/theateranderWien2024-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">(Beethoven once worked here)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Following its post-renovation reopening, Vienna&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/entertainment\/opera\/theater-wien\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"18961\">oldest opera house<\/a> has also started occasional English language backstage tours.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Founded by the man who wrote the libretto to Mozart&#8217;s <em>The Magic Flute<\/em>, the Theater an der Wien hosted premieres of works by such names as Beethoven, Strauss, Leh\u00e1r, and Schubert.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Burgtheater<\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/burgtheaterdistance.jpg\" alt=\"The Burgtheater from the Rathausplatz\" class=\"wp-image-45198\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/burgtheaterdistance.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/burgtheaterdistance-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">(The view from the Rathausplatz square)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Our final port of call is the 1888 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/entertainment\/theaters\/burgtheater\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"85\">Burgtheater<\/a>, essentially Austria&#8217;s national theatre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Perhaps surprisingly, the staircases form the highlight of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/entertainment\/burgtheater-tour\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"19099\">guided tours<\/a> of the building. But then one of the artists who decorated those staircases with suitable frescoes was a young painter named Gustav Klimt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"special\">Special events<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Finally, a couple of special annual events allow us to tour places normally closed off to the public. For example:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/entertainment\/events\/open-house\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"18246\">Open House Vienna<\/a> (usually September): excellent for rarer architectural highlights, such as social housing or industrial premises.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The 2-day Easter and Christmas markets in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/footsteps\/palais-niederosterreich-2\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"14694\">Palais Nieder\u00f6sterreich<\/a>: typically accompanied by tours around this historical building, including rooms dating back to the 1500s<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/entertainment\/events\/european-heritage-day\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"6194\">European Heritage Day<\/a> (also usually September): notable, for example, for several private palais buildings that open up for one day of the year.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Vienna offers plenty of historical architecture to look at from the outside, but various tours let you explore what goes on behind the curtains and windows.
