(He knows they&#8217;re myriapods because he&#8217;s studying biology).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Happy days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And those days are back\u2026thanks to the Retro Gaming Museum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The museum opened in mid-2023 and delivers a largely chronological journey through the development of gaming technology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div align=\"center\"><em>Ad:<\/em><br><\/div><div data-tiqets-widget=\"discovery\" data-cards-layout=\"horizontal\" data-content-type=\"venue\" data-content-ids=\"219199,205287\" data-partner=\"visitingvienna\" data-tq-campaign=\"DA_VR\"><\/div><script defer src=\"https:\/\/widgets.tiqets.com\/loader.js\"><\/script>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Small displays present the appropriate computers, consoles, game cartridges, and similar. So a place to spot a ZX Spectrum. Or the original Xbox, Wii and PlayStation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>More importantly, you have various stations where you can play some of the associated games (for free). Beginning with the original Pong, widely regarded as the grandmother of all video games.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So try your hand at the early iterations of such joys as Pac-Man or Donkey Kong on original equipment. I had to tear my companion away from Tetris, still addictive even without all the bells and whistles of modern versions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tackle one or two arcade consoles, too, including Centipede (be still my beating heart). And even a couple of VR headsets bring us into today&#8217;s world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The items on display are expanding continually. Recently, for example, the museum received the Collector&#8217;s Edition of the iconic <em>Witcher III Wild Hunt<\/em> game (be still my beating heart, again).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Back to the past<\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/retrogamingmuseum1.jpg\" alt=\"Museum sign and part of the Haus des Meeres\" class=\"wp-image-62062\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/retrogamingmuseum1.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/retrogamingmuseum1-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">(The museum really is close to the Haus des Meeres)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Retro Gaming Museum actually sits next to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/culture\/wwii-vienna\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"69411\">flak tower<\/a> that now houses the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/hausdesmeeres\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"235\">Haus des Meeres<\/a> aquarium and vivarium. The museum entrance takes you into an underground air raid shelter used in WWII.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This bunker has a preservation order on it, so you can still see the old ventilation equipment and read signs warning people to keep away if they have an infectious disease.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(Elsewhere in Vienna, you can &#8220;enjoy&#8221; a brief experience of a bunker during an air raid as part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/entertainment\/time-travel-tour\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"16923\">Time Travel Tour<\/a>.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As well as demonstrating the remarkable technical evolution of the gaming market, the museum serves as a journey into the past for those of us from, shall we say, an older generation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Perched on the stool in front of Centipede, I could practically smell the stale beer and feel the guilt of seeing the food budget disappear into the coin slot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Younger children will also appreciate the simplicity of those earlier games.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Tickets and tips<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>At the time of writing, you buy your tickets on site with adult entrance costing \u20ac12.90 and various concessions available.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The unusual location means cool temperatures, making it a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/weather\/how-to-keep-cool\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"74122\">top alternative<\/a> for days when you wish to avoid the heat. You may even want to take a pullover or jacket into the museum (particularly for those seasons when cooling off is no longer desirable).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Given the location and preservation orders, you do need to use steps to go down into the museum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Consider, of course, nipping across to the Haus des Meeres before or after: another family attraction and really rather good. (Sharks!) The rooftop restaurant has its own lift and spectacular <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/where-to-get-the-best-views-of-the-city\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"4922\">views across Vienna<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And should you wish to tackle the gaming urge after your visit, too, one of Vienna&#8217;s largest electronic stores is a short walk away within the Gerngross department store at Mariahilfer Stra\u00dfe 42-48.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That whole street is a prime <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/shopping\/best-places-to-shop\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"1920\">shopping hotspot<\/a> and includes the popular <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/entertainment\/theaters\/english-cinemas-vienna\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"633\">Haydn English cinema<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We also host a couple of giant events in the city with strong gaming themes, most notably October&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/entertainment\/events\/game-city\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"6214\">Game City<\/a> and November&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/entertainment\/events\/comic-con\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"6726\">Vienna Comic Con<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to get to the museum<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Once you reach the flak tower housing the Haus des Meeres, you want the side opposite the main doors. You should then easily spot the protruding entrance to the shelter and museum (facing the junction of Schadekgasse and Nelkengasse).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Subway: the location is practically a neighbour of the Neubaugasse station on the U3 line that traverses the centre of Vienna<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bus: the 13A and 14A buses pass through. Get off at either the Haus des Meeres or Neubaugasse stops, depending on which direction you come from.
