The problem is there just isn&#8217;t the space to display more than a handful at any one time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fortunately, they feed us regular doses of genius through an ever-changing schedule of exhibitions, enhancing their own material with loans from other locations around the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So it is with Claude Monet&#8217;s efforts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The exhibition features 100 paintings from around 40 different sources, including such prestigious museums as the Mus\u00e9e d\u2019Orsay, London&#8217;s National Gallery, Boston&#8217;s Museum of Fine Arts, and (particularly) the Mus\u00e9e Marmottan Monet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The collection traces Monet&#8217;s development both geographically and artistically, through his time in Paris,&nbsp;Argenteuil,&nbsp;V\u00e9theuil, and Giverny, through his visits to the coast and abroad (e.g. to London), and from his early impressionist work through to the more abstract later years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>All these works give form to the vision invoked in such quotes as this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>For me, a landscape does not exist in its own right, since its appearance changes at every moment; but the surrounding atmosphere brings it to life &#8211; the air and the light which vary continually.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>So you&#8217;ll see, for example, such delights as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>Boulevard des Capucines<\/em>, part of the world&#8217;s very first impressionist exhibition in Paris in 1874<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Paintings from the <em>Rouen Cathedral<\/em> and <em>Haystacks<\/em> series that experts regard as perhaps the pinnacle of impressionism<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Works from the garden at Giverny, including examples from the <em>Water Lilies<\/em> and <em>Japanese Bridge<\/em> series.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Dates, tickets &amp; tips<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The exhibition runs from Friday, 21st September 2018 to Sunday, 6th January 2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A museum entrance ticket includes the Monet exhibition, or walk in once for free with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/vienna-pass-review\/\">Vienna Pass<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Don&#8217;t leave the museum without discovering some of its other delights, including the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/museums\/albertina-staterooms\/\">staterooms<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/museums\/albertina-art\/\">permanent exhibition<\/a> (which features many other impressionist works).
