For popular, mainstream movies, try these English cinemas&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"the-haydn-kino\">The Haydn Kino<\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/haydncinema.jpg\" alt=\"The Haydn English cinema\" class=\"wp-image-42342\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/haydncinema.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/haydncinema-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">(The cinema we go to most)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is where my family and I tend to go to watch the latest films.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Haydn sits on one of the main <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/shopping\/best-places-to-shop\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"1920\">shopping streets<\/a> and close to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/footsteps\/haydn-monument\/\">Haydn monument<\/a>. The area is full of restaurants and snack bars, too. Reach the cinema easily on the U3 subway line (get off at Neubaugasse).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As well as current releases, the Haydn offers regular additional specials. For example:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Live performance recordings of opera, theatre and similar. La Traviata anyone?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Special screenings of past movies. Perhaps <em>Love Actually<\/em> at Christmas, <em>Barbie<\/em> on International Women&#8217;s Day or a <em>Harry Potter<\/em> retrospective<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Sing-a-longs to films like <em>Mama Mia!<\/em> and <em>Grease<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Address: Mariahilfer Stra\u00dfe 57, 1060 Vienna | <a href=\"https:\/\/www.haydnkino.at\/\">Website<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"artis-international\">Artis International<\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/artisinternational.jpg\" alt=\"Artis International cinema\" class=\"wp-image-42340\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/artisinternational.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/artisinternational-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">(Conveniently located in the very centre of town)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Part of the Cineplexx chain and the most central of the English cinemas, slap bang in the middle of the old town between the famous <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/ankeruhr-anchor-clock\/\">Ankeruhr<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/judenplatz\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"31702\">Judenplatz<\/a> (which has the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/museums\/jewish-museum\/\">Jewish Museum<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/museums\/holocaust-memorial\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"6460\">Holocaust Memorial<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>My other cinematic haunt: most recently for <em>Alien: Romulus<\/em>. I&#8217;m a sophisticated cineaste.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Address: Schultergasse 5, 1010 Vienna | <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cineplexx.at\/center\/artis-international\/\">Website<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"the-burg-kino\">The Burg Kino<\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/burgkino.jpg\" alt=\"The Burg cinema\" class=\"wp-image-42341\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/burgkino.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/burgkino-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">(Home to showings of <em>The Third Man<\/em>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another central one, close to the grand old <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/museums\/khm\/overview\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"1446\">Kunsthistorisches Museum<\/a>. This cinema also does regular specials, such as Austrian and international films with English subtitles or vintage screenings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Most importantly, the Burg typically shows <em>The Third Man<\/em> every week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This 1949 Oscar-winning movie based (and filmed) in Vienna is worth seeing for the locations alone. The cinema has an IMAX screen, too, so a strong option for action blockbusters.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you have kids, the Apollo Kino sits opposite the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/hausdesmeeres\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"235\">Haus des Meeres<\/a> (a fantastic giant aquarium and vivarium in a converted flak tower) and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/museums\/retro-gaming-museum\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"62158\">Retro Gaming Museum<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Address: Gumpendorferstra\u00dfe 63, 1060 Vienna | <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cineplexx.at\/cinemas\/Apollo-Das-Kino\">Website<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div align=\"center\"><em>Ad:<\/em><br><\/div><div data-tiqets-widget=\"discovery\" data-cards-layout=\"horizontal\" data-content-type=\"venue\" data-content-ids=\"219199,205287\" data-partner=\"visitingvienna\" data-tq-campaign=\"DA_VR\"><\/div><script defer src=\"https:\/\/widgets.tiqets.com\/loader.js\"><\/script>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"other-english-language-cinemas\">Other English-language cinemas<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>For less mainstream English-language movies, particularly, try the list below. When browsing, look for these abbreviations:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>OV<\/strong>: <em>Originalversion<\/em> &#8211; original version. This means it&#8217;s shown in the original language the film was made in<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>OmU<\/strong>: <em>Original mit Untertitel<\/em> &#8211; original with subtitles. So the same as OV, but showings feature subtitles (usually meaning subtitles in German)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>OmdU<\/strong>: <em>Original mit deutschem Untertitel<\/em>. As OmU but making it very clear the film&#8217;s subtitles are in German<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>OmeU<\/strong>: <em>Original mit englischem Untertitel<\/em> &#8211; original with English subtitles. Also home to, for example, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/entertainment\/events\/french-festival-film\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"14573\">Festival du Film Francophone<\/a>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first three cinemas in this list are relatively central, being close to (or on) the Ring boulevard that surrounds the old town:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Votiv Kino<\/strong> (often participates in film festivals so look out for special showings)\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>W\u00e4hringerstarsse 12 (9th district) | <a href=\"https:\/\/www.votivkino.at\/\">Website<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>De France<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Schottenring 5 (1st district)  | <a href=\"https:\/\/www.votivkino.at\/\">Website<\/a> (shared with the Votiv Kino)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Gartenbaukino<\/strong> (possibly the most prestigious address)\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Parkring 12 (1st district) | <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gartenbaukino.at\/\">Website<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Filmcasino<\/strong> (another film festival favourite)\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Margaretenstra\u00dfe 78 (5th district) | <a href=\"http:\/\/www.filmcasino.at\/\">Website<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Shikaneder<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Margaretenstra\u00dfe 24 (4th district)| <a href=\"https:\/\/www.schikaneder.at\/\">Website<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Top Kino<\/strong>\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Rahlgasse 1 (6th district) | <a href=\"https:\/\/www.topkino.at\/\">Website<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"film-festivals\">Film festivals<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Vienna also hosts various international <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/entertainment\/events\/film-festivals\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"17806\">film festivals and film events<\/a>, many featuring movies in English (with subtitles) or movies in other languages with English subtitles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"useful-information\">Useful tips&#8230;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>For the record, the German for cinema is <em>Kino<\/em>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As mentioned earlier, some local cinemas also have the occasional showing in English. If you&#8217;re checking listings in a paper or outside a movie theater, look out for these abbreviations given above that tell you about languages and subtitles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For more English-language culture, note that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/activities\/opera-in-vienna\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"1660\">opera houses<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/activities\/theatres-cinemas\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"1664\">theatres<\/a>, etc. in Vienna may have English productions.
