All the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/entertainment\/classical-concert\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"5359\">popular venues<\/a> continue their concert programmes through late November and December.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, below I list Christmas-themed highlights from the major concert &amp; church locations as I come across them, as well as details of some smaller and seasonal venues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the time of writing (just a couple of days after the previous Christmas), scheduled events are understandably thin on the ground. Seasonal changes to the usual routine are common, with many such venues offering <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiqets.com\/en\/vienna-christmas-new-years-eve-concerts-tickets-l254313\/?partner=visitingvienna&amp;tq_campaign=LG_Xmas\" rel=\"sponsored\">special Christmas concerts<\/a>*.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"churches\">Concerts in churches<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Many churches hold advent concerts and choral recitals through December. The Wiener Symphoniker orchestra usually holds an annual Advent Concert there, too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Peterskirche<\/h4>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/peterskirchedome.jpg\" alt=\"Dome of Peterskirche\" class=\"wp-image-42844\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/peterskirchedome.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/peterskirchedome-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">(The dome mirrors that of its Vatican namesake)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A beautiful <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/peterskirche\/\">baroque church<\/a> in the centre, which hosts concerts in the church itself and also in the crypt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Notable for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/entertainment\/events\/classic-ensemble-review\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"61093\">regular performances<\/a> by the Classic Ensemble Vienna (which I attended with a friend and thoroughly enjoyed).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Karlskirche<\/h4>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/karlskirchefront.jpg\" alt=\"Karlskirche front view\" class=\"wp-image-46533\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/karlskirchefront.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/karlskirchefront-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">(The entrance is actually on the right hand side)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The mighty and magnificent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/karlskirche\/\">baroque church<\/a> on Karlsplatz square also has a fair few concerts in the advent season programme.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Last year, for example, the Orchestra 1756 put on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/entertainment\/events\/vivaldi-concert-karlskirche\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"74311\">regular evening performances<\/a> of Vivaldi&#8217;s <em>The Four Seasons<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Minoritenkirche<\/h4>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/minoritenkirche2025.jpg\" alt=\"Full view of the Minoritenkirche\" class=\"wp-image-82513\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/minoritenkirche2025.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/04\/minoritenkirche2025-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">(This ancient bastion dates back to the 1200s)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Home to the Italian congregation in Vienna, this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/entertainment\/minoritenkirche\/\">large gothic church<\/a> also sits in the city centre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Unlike many similar locations, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiqets.com\/en\/vienna-attractions-c60335\/tickets-for-minorite-church-classical-concert-p1104980\/?partner=visitingvienna&amp;tq_campaign=LG_Xmas\" rel=\"sponsored\">Christmas concerts<\/a>* tend to be an eclectic mix of different performers and works (so check the programme for what&#8217;s happening on any one day).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Kapuzinerkirche<\/h4>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/imperialcryptentrance.jpg\" alt=\"Entrance to the Imperial Crypt\" class=\"wp-image-45344\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/imperialcryptentrance.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/imperialcryptentrance-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">(Home to many former Emperors and Empresses)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2025, the Wiener Kaiserquartett &amp; Friends performed a selection of seasonal music and songs in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/kapuzinerkirche-capuchin-church\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"75265\">Capuchin Church<\/a> on various dates from late November to the end of December.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The church sits above the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/kapuzinergruft\/\">Imperial Crypt<\/a>. So you can enjoy some festive classical music and also see the last resting place of those who ruled at the time the pieces were written.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Annakirche<\/h4>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/annakircheentrance.jpg\" alt=\"Entrance to the Annakirche\" class=\"wp-image-46017\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/annakircheentrance.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/annakircheentrance-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">(The interior decoration in the Annakirche is mindblowing)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/annakirche\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"27656\">another gorgeous church<\/a> in the old town with concerts typically focusing on the peak era of Viennese classical music (think Beethoven, Schubert, Mozart, etc.).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The previous three Advents also had festive tunes performed on trumpets. So hopefully the trumpets return in 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Votivkirche<\/h4>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/votivkircheportal.jpg\" alt=\"Portal into the Votivkirche\" class=\"wp-image-45345\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/votivkircheportal.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/votivkircheportal-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">(Impressive, but not as old as it looks!)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Last time out, this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/votivkirche\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"27630\">neo-gothic giant<\/a> had, for example, a Christmas concert by Monika Ballwein, traditional classics and gospel hits from Andy Lee Lang &amp; The Morris Family, as well as performances by Stella Jones &amp; The American Christmas Gospel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Light of Creation <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiqets.com\/en\/vienna-attractions-c60335\/tickets-for-light-of-creation-new-immersive-lightshow-at-votive-church-vienna-p1109003\/?partner=visitingvienna&amp;tq_campaign=LG_Xmas\" rel=\"sponsored\">immersive light show<\/a>* at the church continued across advent. I&#8217;ve not been myself, but heard good things about it from friends.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div align=\"center\"><em>Ad:<\/em><br><\/div><div data-tiqets-widget=\"discovery\" data-cards-layout=\"horizontal\" data-slug-ids=\"exp206741,exp205287\" data-partner=\"visitingvienna\" data-tq-campaign=\"DA_Christmas\"><\/div><script defer src=\"https:\/\/widgets.tiqets.com\/loader.js\"><\/script>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"musikverein\">The Musikverein<\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/musikverein.jpg\" alt=\"Front of the Musikverein\" class=\"wp-image-41926\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/musikverein.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/musikverein-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">(The fa\u00e7ade above the front entrance)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/entertainment\/musikverein\/\">Musikverein<\/a> ranks as probably the world&#8217;s most prestigious and best classical music venue. They have daily &#8220;normal&#8221; performances, but seasonal events and concerts always pop up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Wiener Mozart Orchestra <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiqets.com\/en\/wiener-musikverein-tickets-l72533\/?partner=visitingvienna&amp;tq_campaign=LG_Xmas\" rel=\"sponsored\">performs here<\/a>* across much of Advent 2026 in period costume, too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other (Christmas-specific) performances have yet to be scheduled at the time of writing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, if we stretch out the concept of the Christmas period a little, then a reliable annual constant is the rather excellent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/entertainment\/events\/new-years-concert\/\">New Year&#8217;s Concert<\/a> from the Wiener Philharmoniker.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This major cultural event traditionally takes place on December 30th and 31st, as well as January 1st. Though you must have applied for tickets early in the year to have a chance of attending.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(More info and tickets on Musikverein events available at their website.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"konzerthaus\">The Konzerthaus<\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/konzerthaus.jpg\" alt=\"The Konzerthaus\" class=\"wp-image-43637\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/konzerthaus.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/02\/konzerthaus-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">(The Konzerthaus main entrance)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another prestigious venue is the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/entertainment\/konzerthaus\/\">Konzerthaus<\/a>, which usually has a more eclectic advent choice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The venue always hosts <em>Christmas in Vienna<\/em>: the rather-apt title of a traditional gala music event held annually. The 2026 dates are December 16th (preview edition) and December 17th (the main event).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>International singers typically accompany, for example, the Vienna Boys Choir, the Konzerthaus&#8217;s own choir (the Wiener Singakademie), and the ORF Radio Symphony Orchestra for a seasonal sing-song and feel-good evening of entertainment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The program can range from traditional carols and songs to pop classics, opera arias, and orchestral compositions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Should you miss out on tickets, the national broadcaster (ORF) usually shows it on TV (as do many other countries, I believe).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Other Christmas-themed performances will appear in the programme at the Konzerthaus, but I await details.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>(More info and tickets for Konzerthaus events available at their website.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div align=\"center\"><em>Ad:<\/em><br><\/div><div data-tiqets-widget=\"discovery\" data-cards-layout=\"horizontal\" data-slug-ids=\"exp206741,exp238032\" data-partner=\"visitingvienna\" data-tq-campaign=\"DA_ConcTour\"><\/div><script defer src=\"https:\/\/widgets.tiqets.com\/loader.js\"><\/script>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"opera\">The opera houses<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/entertainment\/opera\/staatsoper\/\">Staatsoper<\/a> traditionally performs Strauss&#8217;s <em>Die Fledermaus<\/em> on New Year&#8217;s Eve (and again on January 1st), but I await confirmation for 2026\/2027<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/entertainment\/opera\/volksoper\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"1083\">Volksoper<\/a> has a traditional Christmas concert in December, too, though 2026 dates have yet to be released<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"other\">Bonus Concerts in Museums etc.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>One intriguing option is the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/entertainment\/events\/candlelight-concerts\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"75858\">Fever candlelight concerts<\/a>, which typically feature classical interpretations of popular or modern music, along with more classical evenings that fit the time of year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Venues around Christmas last time out included the likes of the Weltmuseum, the refurbished Sofiens\u00e4le, the House of Strauss and Palais Ferstel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The amateur tradition<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>A special bonus mention for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.concentus21.at\/\">Concentus21 orchestra<\/a>, as they uphold the Viennese tradition of amateur orchestras and musicians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The orchestra usually brings us a special performance at Advent. On November 28th, 2026, it will be Mozart&#8217;s <em>Piano Concerto No. 17<\/em> in G major and Napol\u00e9on Henri Reber&#8217;s <em>Symphony No.4<\/em> in G major.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The Mozarthaus<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>This is where Mozart <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/footsteps\/mozarthaus\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"5858\">once lived<\/a> and the location of the main museum dedicated to the composer. Keep an eye out for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/entertainment\/bosendorfer-saal\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"11115\">concerts there<\/a>. We had performances from 3.30pm to 7pm.
