But the big question for us, of course, is\u2026was it worth it?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Spoiler: yes. We have a new jewel in the city&#8217;s museum landscape.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At its core, the Wien Museum presents the history of Vienna (the city and community) in three floors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We discover the art and the achievements, but also the darker times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We explore lives, events and movements. My history<\/em> exhibition takes you on a chronological journey through 13 chapters. You begin at the Paleolithic era with a mammoth tusk and end in the current day with a backpack from a food delivery service.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Roman encampments, Gothic cathedrals, Habsburg monarchs, Ottoman sieges, Nazis, Red Vienna, the Wiener Moderne and more all feature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The displays go beyond just history to draw in art, culture, economics, social issues, urban development and even natural history (including an itinerant giant whale sculpture that once graced the insides of the Zum Walfisch restaurant in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/entertainment\/prater\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"35726\">the Prater<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Something for everyone and plenty of interactive hands-on elements for kids, too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A journey full of change, yet always presented with a thread of continuity and parallels between past and present.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I&#8217;m working on a more detailed article on the exhibition itself, but here some personal highlights:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Art<\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"332\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/wienmuseum2023a.jpg\" alt=\"Paintings in an exhibition\" class=\"wp-image-66183\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/wienmuseum2023a.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/wienmuseum2023a-300x199.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">(Klimt, Kurzweil and others in the Fin-de-si\u00e8cle Vienna chapter; press photo by Lisa Rastl \u00a9 Wien Museum)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You might almost consider this an art museum inside a history museum. The cityscapes in oils, etchings, watercolours and engravings bring the past to life and allow comparisons across the decades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And then we have the famous artists, with works by the likes of Gustav Klimt, Egon Schiele, Richard Gerstl, Auguste Rodin, Otto Wagner, Rudolf von Alt, Friedrich von Amerling, and Ferdinand Georg Waldm\u00fcller\u2026among many others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We can, of course, appreciate the many oil paintings for their artistic quality, but also understand their marketing or even propaganda value; disinformation did not begin with social media. As such, not all the displayed works make for comfortable viewing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, the numerous Nazi banners in Igo P\u00f6tsch&#8217;s 1940 painting of Heldenplatz square and <em>The F\u00fchrer Travelling to the Proclamation on March 15th, 1938<\/em> feel like scars on the city&#8217;s character.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Models &amp; installations<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>I love the giant models of Vienna at different time periods, not to mention a huge replica of Stephansdom cathedral built in the 1800s (with a periscope to see inside).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One large atrium also has the original statues from the 18th-century <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/donnerbrunnen\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"61495\">Donnerbrunnen fountain<\/a> you can see on Neuer Markt square (home to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/eatingdrinking\/cafespubsbars\/oberlaa-neuer-markt\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"53975\">one of my favourite caf\u00e9s<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Connections &amp; commentary<\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"333\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/wienmuseum2023c.jpg\" alt=\"Biedermeier paintings\" class=\"wp-image-66185\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/wienmuseum2023c.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/12\/wienmuseum2023c-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">(Despite these paintings, it&#8217;s not all about domestic bliss in the Wien Museum; press photo by Lisa Rastl \u00a9 Wien Museum)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>History is anything but dry here, as the exhibition constantly draws out links to current issues and times.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So you discover a long tradition of moving to where the work is: Roman soldiers assigned to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/culture\/vindobona\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"32729\">Vindobona<\/a> (Vienna&#8217;s Latin name) came from the British Isles, Arabia, North Africa and throughout Europe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Six dedicated visitor stations actually invite you to consider specific parallels between the past and today. Medieval guilds restricted access to certain occupations, for example. Today we have more subtle glass ceilings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I particularly value an approach that goes beyond the usual areas of emphasis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Many places in Vienna have a laser-like focus on emperors and empresses. Understandable, of course, and the Wien Museum has its paintings of Imperial personalities, too. But the servants also get attention.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The museum, for example, invites us to admire the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/culture\/history-of-the-ringstrassen\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"68027\">monumental construction era<\/a> of the late 1800s that gave rise to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/ring\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"1546\">the Ring<\/a> and all its glories. But the compensation is a next-generation airy, modern museum with room to breathe. And all carrying the Austrian Ecolabel. Both the building and permanent exhibition are designed for accessibility that goes far beyond the usual.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Be sure to go out onto the terrace, which gives you views across the park to the neighbouring <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/karlskirche\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"22144\">Karlskirche church<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/entertainment\/musikverein\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"5593\">Musikverein<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/entertainment\/konzerthaus\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"5586\">Konzerthaus<\/a> and other landmarks. In winter, dusk should provide a gorgeous outlook across the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/christmasmarkets\/karlsplatz\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"219\">Art Advent Christmas market<\/a> below.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"special\">Tickets, exhibitions &amp; tips<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Unusually for Vienna and the wider German-speaking world, basic museum entry is free. This includes the permanent exhibition. You only pay to access any special exhibition that might be on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Special exhibitions<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The current schedule for the main ticketed exhibition area is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>Knowledge for All<\/em> (until April 5th, 2026): kind of a history of the infographic, tracing the invention of the Isotype (International System of Typographic Picture Education) by Otto Neurath and collaborators in 1920s Vienna, its subsequent spread across the world, and its continuing use today<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Next up:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><em>The Danube Island<\/em> (March 26th to August 30th, 2026): an extended look at the huge artificial island that has become a fixture in Vienna&#8217;s sociocultural identity through its roles as recreational facility and nature park<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Some additional tips:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The official website also offers a free digital guide to the permanent exhibition in English you can access via your smartphone&#8217;s web browser. No app needed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The museum has the fully-fledged <a href=\"https:\/\/www.trudeund.at\/\">Trude restaurant<\/a> (also open late at night) on the ground floor and a self-service caf\u00e9-bar (a certain summer hit) adjoining the terrace inside the main museum itself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Vienna has other options for exploring specific aspects of its history outside the Wien Museum. The Wien Museum occupies the NE corner of the Karlsplatz area, which has its own subway station.
