For many decades after, it served as a popular entertainment hub for the Viennese&#8230;a host for concerts and balls and home to a restaurant and caf\u00e9.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Johann Strauss (father and son) both performed regularly, for example. The former even conducted at the grand opening on June 21st.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In late July 1837, the <em>\u00d6sterreichisches Morgenblatt<\/em> noted (my rough translation):<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Mr Z\u00f6gernitz&#8217;s new establishment is nice, tasteful and proving rather popular. On the 11th of this month, Johann Strauss held a benefit concert there. The Diglas family were temporary occupiers and still run several coffee houses in Vienna today; Wien Museum Inv.-Nr. 93740\/485; excerpt reproduced with permission under the terms of the CC0 licence)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That same month another writer gave the new establishment the very highest praise, expressing only regret at the dust encountered on the journey to get there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sadly, an always dynamic history eventually saw the location end up with a chemist on the ground floor, faded dreams and disused rooms where high society once danced to the newest waltzes and polkas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But a new enterprise has given the wheel of time another turn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The House of Strauss<\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/casionzoegernitz1.jpg\" alt=\"Entrance to the House of Strauss\" class=\"wp-image-68511\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/casionzoegernitz1.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/casionzoegernitz1-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">(A gateway to Strauss)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In late 2023, after a long period of extensive renovation and rejuvenation, Casino Z\u00f6gernitz (re)opened as the House of Strauss, promising to recapture the flavour of the Strauss era through a museum, concerts and a restaurant.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The museum<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>The exhibition part is not a museum experience in the traditional sense, but an interactive introduction to the Strauss dynasty and their music.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It begins with a 15-minute English-language presentation beamed onto the stage in the ballroom &amp; concert hall (lovingly restored to its original state and colours). The part-animated video gives you an overview of the family history along with samples of some of the most famous pieces they composed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is where you already begin to grasp the power of the music.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So many instantly recognisable tunes (e.g. the <em>Radetzky March<\/em> or the <em>Blue Danube<\/em>), often with a certain joyfulness that seems to bypass the weariness of the mind and head straight for the heart.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"336\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/houseofstrauss1.jpg\" alt=\"View of Strauss exhibition\" class=\"wp-image-68508\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/houseofstrauss1.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/02\/houseofstrauss1-300x202.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">(Among the many interactive elements; press photo \u00a9 Lea Titz)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The exhibition itself largely uses copies of historical photos and documents, along with numerous interactive stations, to touch on various themes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So you might learn something of the Vienna of the time of Johann Strauss I. Or the opinions of other great composers like Wagner and Berlioz on Johann Strauss II. Or learn about the spouses of Eduard and Josef Strauss.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The impact is much like a waltz itself: a combination of frothy entertainment and museal seriousness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And you find music everywhere, of course. I stepped forward to read a display text about Franz Liszt and triggered a burst of Johann Strauss I&#8217;s <em>Furioso Galopp<\/em> based on motifs by Liszt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Such interactions add a solid layer of fun. We had the <em>Strauss-Jause<\/em> there: a well-presented (and tasty) sweet or savoury treat served on a 3-tier plate, though of course the current menu may now offer a different selection of meals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"tickets\">Tickets &amp; visitor tips<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Tickets for the museum, concerts etc. are available from the House of Strauss and online agencies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div align=\"center\"><p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">(Booking service provided by Tiqets.com*, who I am an affiliate of)<\/p><div data-tiqets-widget=\"availability\" data-layout=\"full\" data-venue-id=\"237678\" data-partner=\"visitingvienna\" data-tq-campaign=\"AW_HofStrauss\"><\/div><script defer src=\"https:\/\/widgets.tiqets.com\/loader.js\"><\/script><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div style=\"height:25px\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"wp-block-spacer\"><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/vienna-pass-review\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"3960\">Vienna Pass<\/a> also includes one-time free entry to the museum\/exhibition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For more Strauss joy in Vienna, the city has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/footsteps\/johann-strauss\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"21524\">various sites<\/a> associated with the Strauss family (particularly its most famous member).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to get to Casino Z\u00f6gernitz<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Dusty rides in horse-drawn wagons are no longer required.
