At one point, the Austrian national team was pretty much the best on the planet. Those were the <em>Wunderteam<\/em> years of the early 1930s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today&#8217;s domestic league suffers from the attractions of the German Bundesliga, the Premier League and elsewhere, which tend to drain the Austrian clubs and academies of all the top talent (and viewers).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">League structure<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The top two tiers of football are national leagues: the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bundesliga.at\/\">Bundesliga<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.2liga.at\/\">Zweite Liga<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>One team has dominated the Bundesliga of late: Red Bull Salzburg have been champions in ten of the last twelve seasons. Other traditionally well-supported clubs are Rapid Wien, Sturm Graz, LASK Linz and Austria Wien.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Red Bull (as they&#8217;re known here) have had a shaky couple of years of late, though. They finished second in 2023\/2024 and third in 2024\/2025. Sturm Graz came top on both occasions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The third tier consists of three regional leagues<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Clubs from Vienna play in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oefb.at\/bewerbe\/Bewerb\/226510?Regionalliga-Ost\">Regionalliga Ost<\/a> alongside representatives from two other provinces: Burgenland and Lower Austria.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Tier 4 consists of separate leagues for each province<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Since Vienna counts as a province in its own right, Tiers 4 and below are essentially city leagues populated mostly by clubs from within the capital&#8217;s borders. Tier 4 is called the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.oefb.at\/bewerbe\/Bewerb\/226635?Wiener-Stadtliga\">Wiener Stadtliga<\/a> in Vienna.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Each league normally has a lengthy winter break, since the Austrian climate often means proper winters with snow, ice and low temperatures. The Bundesliga, for example, finished on December 14th, 2025 and restarted on the weekend of February 7th and 8th, 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Fan culture<\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/friedhofstribune.jpg\" alt=\"The Friedhofstrib\u00fcne seen through the rear stadium gates\" class=\"wp-image-47231\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/friedhofstribune.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/friedhofstribune-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">(The former Cemetery Stand at Wiener Sportclub)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The typical stadium tradition among the top tier clubs is a little different to, for example, the British one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rather than respond mainly to what&#8217;s going on in the game, the hardcore fans (ultras) keep up a continuous cacophony of noise and colour intended to create an atmosphere of support for their team.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Of course, that atmosphere depends on the size of that hardcore group. And their efforts can have the opposite effect, should the ultras become disgruntled with the players or club. Nor are the chants always, shall we say, politically correct.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The lower tiers have more of a British football feel to them in terms of atmosphere.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Can you drink beer at the games?<\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/stadiumfootballbeer.jpg\" alt=\"Photos of beer and sausages\" class=\"wp-image-62751\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/stadiumfootballbeer.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/08\/stadiumfootballbeer-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">(Pre-match meal: beer and sausage)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Traditional fare at an Austrian game of football is a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/eatingdrinking\/beer\/\">Kr\u00fcgel of beer<\/a> and a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/eatingdrinking\/food\/kasekrainer\/\">K\u00e4sekrainer sausage<\/a>. No pies that I know of.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Best clubs to watch<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Vienna has numerous longstanding football clubs, but try these four tips for the best match day experience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Wiener Sport-Club (&#8220;Sportclub&#8221;)<\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/pubentrancewienersportclub.jpg\" alt=\"Pub entrance at the Sportclub Stadium\" class=\"wp-image-47233\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/pubentrancewienersportclub.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/pubentrancewienersportclub-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">(Sportclub occupy a unique niche in Viennese football)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>League<\/strong>: Regionalliga Ost<br><strong>Typical attendance<\/strong>: somewhere around 2,000 fans but about half that at their temporary match venue (see below)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A cult club and fallen giant who hold the record for the heaviest defeat handed to Juventus in Europe, having beaten them 7-0 in the 1958\/59 European Cup. (The two clubs have gone in slightly different&nbsp;directions since then.)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Extremely friendly and inclusive atmosphere in the English tradition with fans noted for left-wing leanings and a social conscience. A bigot-free zone. The core supporters group collects on the Friedhofstrib\u00fcne (the cemetery stand). You&#8217;ll find me in the main stand most home games.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Sport-Club Platz stadium is the oldest in the country where football has been played continuously.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>June 2024 saw the start of construction work that has seen the stadium rebuilt. Until complete, home games take place at the nearby training centre or elsewhere. The new stadium looks like it will be ready for home games from early April 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Address<\/strong>: Alszeile 19, 1170 Vienna (stadium being renovated) | <a href=\"https:\/\/wienersportclub.com\/\">Website<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Travel tip<\/strong>: take the 43 tram (from Schottentor) or the 2 tram (from, for example, Karlsplatz) to the Dornbach stop for the stadium. Or the S45 city train to Hernals and walk up.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">First Vienna FC 1894 (&#8220;Vienna&#8221;)<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>League<\/strong>: Zweite Liga<br><strong>Typical attendance<\/strong>: averaging just over 2340 (at the time of writing)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The oldest club in Austria and originally established by Englishmen with the support of the Rothschild family.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Another fallen giant (Mario Kempes once played for them), but currently on the way up again after financial problems back in 2017. Vienna gained promotion to the second national league in the 2021\/2022 season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Like Sport-Club, a more friendly and inclusive atmosphere than elsewhere. The two teams are ostensibly great rivals, but, whenever they meet, the match is known as the &#8220;Derby of Love&#8221;.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The iconic and unusual Hohe Warte stadium has a huge sloping grass hill on one side and once hosted as many as 85,000 spectators.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Address<\/strong>: Klabundgasse 11, 1190 Vienna | <a href=\"https:\/\/www.firstviennafc.at\/\">Website<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Travel tip<\/strong>: take the U4 subway to Heiligenstadt and walk across (past or through the famous <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/culture\/karl-marx-hof\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"39713\">Karl-Marx-Hof<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">SK Rapid Wien (&#8220;Rapid&#8221;)<\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/rapidwienstadium.jpg\" alt=\"Rapid Wien's stadium\" class=\"wp-image-47234\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/rapidwienstadium.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/rapidwienstadium-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">(The stadium makes it clear who plays here)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>League<\/strong>: Bundesliga<br><strong>Typical attendance<\/strong>: averaging almost 21,000 (at the time of writing)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The best-supported club in the country and one of the traditional big four alongside city rivals, Austria Wien (see below), as well as Sturm Graz and Red Bull Salzburg. Winner of numerous trophies, though the last one was back in 2008.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The ultras put on quite a show with huge pre-match choreographic displays and a raucous atmosphere, but that becomes a double-edged sword when the team performs below expectations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The entire crowd always welcomes the last 15 minutes with an ovation to encourage the players. This Rapidviertelstunde (&#8220;Rapid quarter hour&#8221;) tradition dates back over 100 years.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The new Allianz Stadium, opened in 2016, is a lovely, modern stadium with a capacity of around 28,000.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Purchase a prepaid <em>Rapid Mari\u20ac<\/em> card at the stadium, which you use to buy drinks and snacks inside; you can top up the amount on the card at numerous locations around the stadium and concourse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Address<\/strong>: Gerhard-Hanappi-Platz 1, 1140 Vienna | <a href=\"https:\/\/www.skrapid.at\/\">Website<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Travel tip<\/strong>: ride the U4 subway to H\u00fctteldorf and follow the crowds. Catch the U4 in the centre at Karlsplatz, Stadtpark or Schwedenplatz, for example.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">FK Austria Wien (&#8220;Austria&#8221;)<\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/generaliarena.jpg\" alt=\"The Generali Arena sign\" class=\"wp-image-47232\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/generaliarena.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/generaliarena-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">(Generali is a large insurance company and stadium sponsor)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>League<\/strong>: Bundesliga<br><strong>Typical attendance<\/strong>: averaging just under 13,000 (at the time of writing)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Vienna&#8217;s other big professional club. Not as well supported as Rapid, but also with a long and proud tradition. Austria were the last team before Sturm to break the Salzburg hegemony when they won the Bundesliga in 2013.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The club renovated and rebuilt their Generali Arena, which reopened in 2018. So the city now has two modern Bundesliga stadiums.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As with Rapid, the Austria stadium operates a cashless system inside (use a debit card or prepaid card bought at the stadium). You can still use cash at the kiosks outside the stadium last time I checked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Address<\/strong>: Horrplatz 1, 1100 Vienna | <a href=\"http:\/\/www.fk-austria.at\/\">Website<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Travel tip<\/strong>: go to Altes Landgut on the U1 subway to reach the stadium. The U1 leaves the centre at Stephansplatz, Karlsplatz and Schwedenplatz, for example.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The national stadium<\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/ErnstHappelStadium.jpg\" alt=\"The Ernst Happel Stadium\" class=\"wp-image-41744\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/ErnstHappelStadium.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/ErnstHappelStadium-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">(The country&#8217;s largest football ground)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Vienna also hosts Austria&#8217;s national football stadium.
