A man who blessed us with (more or less) nine symphonies. Now imagine being able to see the original manuscript of just one of those works.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Such a treat to envisage Bruckner (1824-1896) hunched over that very paper, poised in inspiration, pen then darting forward to turn a vision into notes on the page.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What if you could see all nine of his symphonic autographs?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Anton Bruckner exhibition in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/winter-palace\/prunksaal\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"2750\">Prunksaal (state hall)<\/a> of the National Library provides exactly that opportunity.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"299\" height=\"450\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/bruckner1.jpg\" alt=\"Photograph of Anton Bruckner\" class=\"wp-image-69733\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/bruckner1.jpg 299w, https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/bruckner1-199x300.jpg 199w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 299px) 100vw, 299px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">(Bruckner photographed by Anton Paul Huber in 1891 ; press photo \u00a9 \u00d6sterreichische Nationalbibliothek)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The library has a quite remarkable Bruckner collection that began with the composer&#8217;s own will, which saw his more prominent autographs and similar paraphernalia go to what was then the court library.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Further acquisitions built such a collection of letters, photos and documents that it now resides on the prestigious Memory of Austria national register of UNESCO&#8217;s Memory of the World project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The exhibition offers a brief overview of Bruckner&#8217;s (musical) biography and those nine symphonies (the last unfinished).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We discover, for example, that his move from a provincial social hierarchy guided by conservative and church tradition to a more open and cosmopolitan Imperial city at the end of the 19th-century led to creative tensions.<\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"365\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/bruckner3.jpg\" alt=\"Anton Bruckner's passport\" class=\"wp-image-69735\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/bruckner3.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/bruckner3-300x219.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">(Bruckner&#8217;s passport in 1880; press photo \u00a9 \u00d6sterreichische Nationalbibliothek)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Bruckner&#8217;s output seems to be a synthesis of these different environments. A man whose appearance and behaviour reflected his provincial upbringing and strong religious beliefs, but whose music often travelled new and innovative paths.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Photos, sheet music and various other documents illustrate the Bruckner chronology. But then don&#8217;t all creatives carry that air of complexity that defies a simple one-room summary?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Dates, tickets &amp; tips<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Delve into the world of Bruckner from March 21st, 2024 to January 26th, 2025.
