But the city specialises in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/entertainment\/classical-concert\/#mozart-strauss-concerts\">classical concerts for visitors<\/a>, offering lighter and better-known pieces by Mozart, Strauss and other &#8220;Viennese&#8221; composers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These concerts typically occupy venues with a long history: everything from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/entertainment\/stephansdom-organ-concerts\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"71451\">gothic cathedrals<\/a> to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/entertainment\/schonbrunn-classical-concerts\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"5608\">palace orangeries<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/entertainment\/events\/vivaldi-concert-karlskirche\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"74311\">baroque churches<\/a>. So you can add ambience and historical authenticity to the performances.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Tip: the Mirage Theatre offers a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiqets.com\/en\/vienna-attractions-c60335\/tickets-for-strauss-dinner-concert-at-mirage-theater-in-prater-p1084652\/?partner=visitingvienna&amp;tq_campaign=LG_Evenings\" rel=\"sponsored\">Strauss dinner concert<\/a>* should you wish to combine food and music. If only it weren&#8217;t for the fact that we find ourselves in a German-speaking country.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ah, but all is not lost.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Vienna&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/entertainment\/shows-and-musicals\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"84036\">musicals<\/a> typically come with English surtitles, while <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/entertainment\/shows-and-musicals\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"84036\">several shows<\/a> are designed so international guests can enjoy them too: see, for example, my review of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/entertainment\/remassuri\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"84763\">Remassuri show<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The major theatres and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/activities\/opera-in-vienna\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"1660\">opera houses<\/a> typically have solutions for those wishing to follow along in English. But&#8230;several have one or more days a week when they stay open later. At the time of writing, for example:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Tuesdays<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/museums\/khm\/weltmuseum\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"9264\">Weltmuseum<\/a> (until 9pm): Vienna&#8217;s main museum of ethnology<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/museums\/mak\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"7100\">MAK museum<\/a> (until 9pm): applied arts, contemporary art and design<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Wednesdays<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/museums\/albertina\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"2995\">Albertina<\/a> (until 9pm): one of our best art museums<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/museums\/natural-history-museum\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"252\">Naturhistorisches Museum<\/a> (until 8pm): the natural history museum<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Thursdays<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/museums\/khm\/overview\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"1446\">Kunsthistorisches Museum<\/a> (until 9pm): another top art museum with a special dinner option on Thursday evening, too<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/museums\/wien-museum-karlsplatz\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"66174\">Wien Museum<\/a> (until 9pm): the history of Vienna<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/museums\/heidi-horten-collection\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"47637\">Heidi Horten Collection<\/a> (until 9pm): prestigious collection of modern and contemporary art<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The National Library&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/winter-palace\/prunksaal\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"2750\">Prunksaal<\/a> (until 9pm): former court library and often home to a special exhibition<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Fridays<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/museums\/albertina\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"2995\">Albertina<\/a> (until 9pm)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Every day<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/museums\/haus-musik\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"16237\">Haus der Musik<\/a> (until 10pm every day): museum of sound and music<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In my experience, the late night openings tend to be less busy than at other times and make for a more relaxed viewing ambience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Tip: the museums often offer in-house guided tours in the evening on late-opening days, too<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Other attractions<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Late-night openings that have crossed my desk include&#8230;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The Riesenrad<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/riesenrad.jpg\" alt=\"Riesenrad cabins\" class=\"wp-image-41890\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/riesenrad.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/01\/riesenrad-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">(The iconic ferris wheel)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Thanks to films like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/songsfilms\/third-man-locations\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"31222\">The Third Man<\/a>, Vienna&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/riesenrad\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"271\">Riesenrad giant ferris wheel<\/a> has a special place in the cityscape, the hearts of the locals, and the guidebooks of visitors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is one of the few attractions to stay open into the evening. Times vary, but can be as late as 11.45pm on summer weekends. So you can combine one of the iconic Viennese experiences with nighttime views of Vienna.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Madame Tussauds<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During the summer season, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/entertainment\/madame-tussauds\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"35377\">Madame Tussauds<\/a> typically opens until 8pm and actually sits opposite the Riesenrad.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Schlumberger<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/schlumberger2.jpg\" alt=\"Front of the Schlumberg wine cellars\" class=\"wp-image-71262\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/schlumberger2.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/schlumberger2-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">(Artfully lit cellars within make for a nice evening tour)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I did the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/eatingdrinking\/schlumberger-wine-cellars\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"71268\">tour of the Schlumberger sparkling wine cellars<\/a> recently and gave it a thumbs up: an informative wander through an intriguing historical setting followed by a glass or more of the end product.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On opening days, the cellars close at 8pm. Some areas or activities (like the massages) may close earlier, though.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Tip: For something closer to the centre, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/entertainment\/sport\/schwerelos\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"67674\">Schwerelos Floating Centre<\/a> usually has a 7pm evening time slot on selected days during the week.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Stadium football<\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/rapidwienstadium.jpg\" alt=\"Rapid Wien's stadium\" class=\"wp-image-47234\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/rapidwienstadium.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/rapidwienstadium-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">(Rapid Wien are Vienna\u2019s biggest club)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You won&#8217;t find too many skiing night races in Vienna. Or day races. Even at around 1,200 km long, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/mapsgeography\/alps\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"5177\">the Alps<\/a> are just a few kilometres too short to make it all the way to us.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, for evening professional sports, your best bet is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/entertainment\/sport\/live-stadium-football\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"6959\">live stadium football<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>During the season, Austria&#8217;s top two leagues often have games starting between 5pm and 8.30pm (look for home games for FK Austria Wien, SK Rapid Wien, FAC Wien or First Vienna FC 1894).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The third tier (Regionalliga Ost in Vienna) and below also has evening games. The legendary Wiener Sportclub, for example, normally plays its home games at 7.30pm on Fridays with a brand new stadium opening in 2026.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Tip: if you prefer watching football on a screen, then I have some <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/entertainment\/sport\/football-pub-bar\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"7337\">pub recommendations<\/a> for you.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Seasonal markets<\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/belvederechristmas2023a.jpg\" alt=\"Four stalls at the Belvedere Christmas market\" class=\"wp-image-65741\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/belvederechristmas2023a.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/belvederechristmas2023a-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">(Enjoy the nighttime atmosphere, as here at the Belvedere Christmas market)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the main attractions during the weeks leading up to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/activities\/easter-in-vienna\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"2731\">Easter<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/entertainment\/christmas-in-vienna\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"627\">Christmas<\/a> are the seasonal markets. I <s>never<\/s> rarely tire of their delights.
