Not your standard medieval-like ambience, but large, well-lit rooms with suitably regal sarcophagi and coffins<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Michaelerkirche: the church on central Michaelerplatz square has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/michaelerkirche-crypt-tour\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"67513\">tours through crypts<\/a> of the more traditional kind. These date back over hundreds of years. But I don&#8217;t mean that kind of sewer trip.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Instead, consider the city&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/songsfilms\/third-man-tour\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"62196\">Third Man Sewer Tour<\/a>, which takes you down to the locations used for the iconic <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/songsfilms\/third-man-locations\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"31222\">underground scenes<\/a> from that movie.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I went on a tour and encountered no unpleasant smells at all. Which is to our benefit during summer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is particularly true of art museums, and Vienna has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sightseeing\/vienna-museums\/#art-museums\">a lot of those<\/a>. And even more true of those museums with fragile older works. So the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/museums\/khm\/paintings\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"1487\">picture galleries<\/a> of the Kunsthistorisches Museum feel like a strong option, as well as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/museums\/albertina\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"2995\">Albertina<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Churches<\/h3>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/augustinianchurch.jpg\" alt=\"Entrance to the Augustinian Church\" class=\"wp-image-45993\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/augustinianchurch.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/augustinianchurch-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">(One of many <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/churches\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"28720\">ecclesiastical options<\/a>)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In a previous summer, the archdiocese of Vienna <a href=\"https:\/\/www.erzdioezese-wien.at\/site\/home\/nachrichten\/article\/121804.html\">noted<\/a> (my rough translation):<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u2026temperatures in many places of worship in Vienna and the east of Lower Austria are currently an average 10 degrees lower than outside<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Not every church offers the same degree of sanctuary from the heat. Look, particularly, for those with thick walls and fewer windows. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/augustinerkirche\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"17061\">Augustinerkirche<\/a> on Josefsplatz, where many imperial marriages took place, is a strong option.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If the heat persists into the night, many churches now offer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/entertainment\/classical-concert\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"5359\">early evening classical concerts<\/a> designed for visitors. Vienna has some 63km of riverside or lakeside banks accessible to the public.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The city authorities provide an overview of natural bathing facilities <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wien.gv.at\/freizeit\/baden\/natur\/index.html\">here<\/a>, for example, and they operate around 18 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wien.gv.at\/en\/leisure\/public-baths\">public baths with outdoor areas<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Key recreational locations are:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/entertainment\/donauinsel\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"62574\">Donauinsel and Neue Donau<\/a>: the island running along the Danube as it passes through most of Vienna is a nature reserve and leisure park with waterfronts for relaxing and numerous water-based activities<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/entertainment\/alte-donau-old-danube\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"50700\">Alte Donau<\/a>: a huge lake with subsidised lidos, public bathing jetties, watersports, walks, caf\u00e9s, restaurants etc.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/entertainment\/donaukanal\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"34106\">Donaukanal<\/a>: an arm of the Danube that actually snakes around the old town. Notable for its numerous waterside <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/eatingdrinking\/cafespubsbars\/donaukanal-street-art-bars\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"34231\">bars and restaurants<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wien.gv.at\/umwelt\/wald\/erholung\/nationalpark\/freizeit\/\">Lobau<\/a>: a wetland nature reserve with hiking and cycling trails<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The city also has numerous playgrounds with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wien.gv.at\/umwelt\/parks\/anlagen\/wasserspielplaetze.html\">facilities involving water<\/a>, including 12 dedicated water-themed play areas. The city provides a directory <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wien.gv.at\/umwelt\/parks\/anlagen\/index.html\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the centre, your strongest options are probably:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/stadtpark\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"3254\">Stadtpark<\/a> runs along part of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/ring\/\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"1546\">Ring boulevard<\/a> that goes around the old town and also includes a section of the River Wien<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/rathauspark\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"84216\">Rathauspark<\/a> spreads out either side of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/entertainment\/rathaus\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"79\">Rathausplatz<\/a> with trees and numerous benches lining paths<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/sights\/winter-palace\/burggarten\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"2746\">Burggarten<\/a> forms part of the central Hofburg complex in the very centre of town<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/rathausparkbenches.jpg\" alt=\"Bench-lined path through a park\" class=\"wp-image-84212\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/rathausparkbenches.jpg 500w, https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/rathausparkbenches-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 500px) 100vw, 500px\" \/><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-small-font-size\">(The Rathauspark has plenty of opportunities to rest hot feet)<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Large park and woodland areas elsewhere:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/entertainment\/prater\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"35726\">Prater<\/a> is known for its giant entertainment complex but also has extensive <a href=\"https:\/\/www.visitingvienna.com\/entertainment\/prater-park-hiking-trail-9\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"35713\">meadows and woodlands<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wien.gv.at\/umwelt\/wald\/erholung\/lainzertiergarten\/index.html\">Lainzer Tiergarten<\/a> giant nature reserve includes a lot of woodland walking routes<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The Wienerwald wooded hills dominate the western and northern edges of Vienna. See, for example, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wien.gv.at\/en\/leisure\/hiking-paths\">city hiking paths<\/a> 1 through to 4a.
